Nice, sit-down restaurant but still kid friendly?

I've dined at the following with kids and have had no issues:

Little Nonna's
Silk City, especially the outside garden area - they don't take reservations.
Melograno
Zahav
Percy Street BBQ
Pub & Kitchen

African restaurant

Walked by this weekend and Le Bercail is no more. They must have closed relatively recently.

African restaurant

There is Le Bercail - African/Senegalese restaurant on 45th & Baltimore. I haven't been in while but I thought the food was tasty. They were very slow though.

recipes for extra bacon

Add it to a bloody Mary.
You can make candy bacon by sprinkling some brown sugar over it and baking it until the sugar melts.

Host gifts for challenging hosts

I usually give flowers or a small potted plant. If I'm bringing flowers, it's in a vase already.

Need tried & true Chocolate Lava cake recipe...

I use this one from Epicurious with great success. The mint chocolate sauce helps to make it a little more special. I also like that it can be made in advance.

3 dinners - Fond, Vetri, Morimoto. Thoughts?

If you're dining solo, dining at Vernick's bar can be lovely. They also have some tables by the bar that are first come, first serve. I've gone on a Saturday night at 6pm before and have been able to get a bar table within 30 minutes.

I also concur with buckethead's list of restaurants that are better than the three you mentioned.

I would add Franklin Mortgage for cocktails
You might also like Franklin Fountain and Shane's Confectioners for old school ice cream and candy.

Mexican in West Philly / University City (not Distrito)?

There's also Guacamole at 47th & Woodland - tacos, tortas, burritos. Has seating for maybe 10-15 people?

Tamales without the work?

the pork filling for the this tamale pie is fantastic. I haven't made the pie, but have made the tamales. The topping for the pie is the same recipe as the tamales itself.

best pancakes

the Green Eggs cafe does a red velvet pancake with chocolate chips in them and they are delicious. personally, I think the children's size red velvet is plenty and the full portion is just too much food. They also have regular chocolate chip pancakes on the menu that are pretty good.

Serpico Tasting Menu or Regular?

We just did the tasting menu last week and I thought it was very good and a great value, 11 courses for $85. The weakest point was definitely dessert. All items were off menu.

I can't remember all the courses but a few standouts were:
shaved foie gras
a very silky chawan mushi with caviar and cauliflower mushrooms
rib cap - I wanted more of it. it was so tender and just the right amount of smoke.
agnolotti stuffed with pork belly and nori

I didn't leave hungry or stuffed. I did finish everything on my plates except for the last dessert - chocolate coffee ganache with some type of milk - sunflower maybe?

New to Philly and I need awesome food in my life and belly!!

I've seen people push the table by the window up to it and use the wide window ledge as bench seating.

New to Philly and I need awesome food in my life and belly!!

I would add:
Pizza Bedia in Fishtown for great, thin crust pizza. Cash only and really tiny.

El Jarocho at 13th & Ellsworth. I love the soups on the weekends.

Artisan Boulanger on Passyunk for great french breads.

DiBruno's or Claudio's for a great cheese selection. Both are in the Italian Market and Dibruno's has a couple of location in Center city - I prefer the one in Rittenhouse.

Whipped Bake Shop

After seeing CGarner's baby shower cake, I was wondering if this board had any feedback on Whipped Bake Shop & their cakes? A search only found one mention of their cupcakes. Their website shows beautiful cakes, cupcakes and cookies, but taste is more important to me than looks. I would especially appreciate feedback on the lemon meringue buttercream filling.

thanks!

Great Seafood: West Philly, Close to 34th & Spruce

I would just say avoid the Doc Magrogran's at 34th & Sansom. Food is not good and pricey.

Short stay in midtown

What day of the week will you be here?

If you're looking for good "street food" perhaps check out the food trucks? Here's the schedule for Love Park and City Hall.

http://www.phila.gov/ParksandRecreati...

I really like Cow and the Curd, Pitruco, Chewy's.

If you're looking for Jewish Deli, there's Hershel's (sp?) at the reading terminal. It's not your typical overstuffed sandwiches, but I like their corned beef and pastrami. I don't recommend getting a roast pork/rabe sandwich for the plane, the bread can get pretty soggy.

For other plane food, if you're there when the Amish are at RTM, I would get a couple of donuts from them, perhaps roast chicken.

as for Pizza, I highly recommend Pizzeria Beddia in Fishtown. Right off the El but not close to center city. Tiny little store, with room for eight people to stand and eat, cash only. Only open in the evening and i want to say only 4 days a week. No phone. The BA foodist loved it. Very crisp crust and only a few pies to choose from.

I don't think it's uniquely Philly, but Tallulah's Garden is lovely in the summertime, especially if you can get a table in their courtyard.

I also recommend High Street on Market for either dinner or breakfast.

Looking for great counter service eats in Philly

there a couple of trucks at the Sunday Headhouse Square Farmers market in addition to the taco stand. You could also get breads, ice cream, fruit, lemonade and spreads (from Talulah's table) to supplement. and there's a little sprayer/fountain area that the kids might like. Or grab a pizza from Pizzeria Stella.

Low-maintenance meat entrees

what if you just picked up a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store? He can carve it or shred it himself. Provide tortillas, beans etc and you could have taco night that satisfies him and you. or you can make falafels and provide pitas, and other filings and he could have gyro/shawarma sandwich. With leftover chicken, you could make chicken salad or add bbq sauce.

Culantro??

Do you have an Asian/Vietnamese grocer near you? It's sometimes served as on the plate with the bean sprouts, basil and lime wedges that comes with an order of Pho.

Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder

Slow cook it first at the low temperature and to get the crispy outer layer, crank it up to 500 in the last 30 minutes or so.

Need best chocolate buttercream recipe

I really like the swiss meringue butter cream recipe from Cook's Illustrated. You beat egg whites and sugar over heat until peaks form and then beat in the butter.

I need help ! extremely picky eater & basically wont eat anything !

Does your sister have more adventurous eating friends? It may help to have her around kids that will eat and try things. see if you can get an invite and ask the parents not to make anything special for her.

I also find that forcing the issue results in power struggle that you will lose. I agree with a previous poster about setting the standard that they need to try new things but not have to finish it. Our daycare use to call it the "No thank you" bite. You have to try it but then you can decide not to eat it. But you can't just outright say you don't like it. Also, don't give up if she says she doesn't like it the first time. I think it takes kids sometimes up to 20-40 tries before liking something.

To get her to eat vegetables, if you have a space for a garden, trying growing food with her. Carrots, snap peas are naturally sweet and great raw. I've seen kids who won't eat cooked peas, but the idea of growing it, picking it straight from the vine and pop them in their mouth and go for another.

Favorite Mollie Katzen recipes?

An ex's mother would make the tofu burritos from the Enchanted Broccoli Forest and I use to love them. I"m not sure if it's in the revised copy.
