Is Breed Street Food Fair still around?

Her son who is supposed to update the Twitter feed is a little bit, um, not very into that task, but she has a semi-permanent home in front of the Breed St. Shul, about a quarter block south of Cesar E. Chávez on the east side of the street. She's normally there by 6:30, serving by 7, and done by 10.

If you miss her, Carmen (another street food fixture) opened a full-on restaurant at 2510 E. Cesar E. Chávez and serves until medianoche.

Where to buy grass fed beef or farm specific beef in LA?

Well, since this is open again, I'll throw Da-Le Ranch out there. From Temecula. Obviously it is not processed in Temecula (for those who don't know, there are only a handful of beef processors, and you are not permitted to buy beef not processed at a certified plant, so even locally raised beef may have Kingsburg, Merced or Yreka addresses on the label).

I buy it alternate weekends at the SoCo Farmers Market in Costa Mesa.

Best Happy Hour in Orange County

How late is late, and do you require cocktails, or is beer and wine alone okay?

Salade gasconne? Or maybe just raw foie gras to purchase?

I'm upset about the impending ban on foie gras. I hardly ever eat it, but I want to have some before it's gone. The problem is that all the chefs in OC and LA seem to be interested only in "creative" foie gras dishes, 99 percent of which involve at least one sugary, sticky, sweet ingredient. Foie gras marshmallows? Foie gras cheesecake? Frozen foie-sicles with peach gelée? Sounds like an invitation to Top Chef!

MEH. Je m'en fous totalement.

I want a salade gasconne. I want mixed greens tossed with tomatoes, lardons and gésiers [duck gizzards] confits in a beautiful, sugar-free mustard vinaigrette, then topped with slices of potato fried in the rendered duck fat and topped with a small—no more than 2 or 3 ounces—slab of pan-seared foie gras.

Is there anywhere—ANYWHERE—in the region to get this?

And failing that, where can I get a piece of very good foie gras to cook at home? I already have the gizzards sealed away in clay jars. I can buy tomatoes and bacon and mixed greens and potatoes. I have the experience cooking French food to do this...

...but I can't find foie gras that's not already turned into terrine or pâté.

Meatball Subs

Huh. Maybe badly cut. I never have that issue.

Meatball Subs

There used to be a place called Milano's on North Brand in Glendale... if I could find the owners and beg for the meatball sub recipe, I would.

In the meantime, I get my meatball sub fix at Niberino's inside the His Nibs liquor store at Ball and Sunkist in Anaheim, opposite end of the buiding from das Jägerhaus.

Meatball Subs

I realize this place is about as inauthentic as it's possible to get—it frankly is the Izzy's Deli of Italian food—but the meatball sub at Monte Carlo Deli is really good.

game meat in orange county

In practice, you can sell as long as you have a USDA inspection certficate. You get a USDA inspection certificate by having the meat inspected. This includes having the lungs inspected and ensuring that the anus is sealed and removed before it leaks into the meat (thus tainting it, which every hunter knows). The only way to do this is either a) trap the game and take it, alive, to a plant or b) take the inspector with you, as you refer to below.

It is not common, but it is not non-existent either.

game meat in orange county

No, I think you've got the wrong end of the stick there. I've certainly bought—and sold—my share of game meat.

Visiting Laguna Beach for a week - need recommendations

Sounds like Javier's to me.

iPhone autocorrect-to-English dictionary: that's Hollingshead's Deli, though I'd only go for the beer.

Call Da-Le Ranch in Lake Elsinore and ask. If they don't have it, I'm sure they can point you.

game meat in orange county

I second this.

Also, oxtail is not game meat (it's cow tail, not actual oxen) and is commonly available at most grocery stores.

If any of you are beerhounds, you'll be smack dab in the middle of half a dozen breweries with tasting rooms. Most are only open at the weekend (Thursday-Sunday) but a few have better hours. There's the Bruery (PL), Bootlegger's (FL), Old Orange (OR), Anaheim Brewery (AN), Noble Ale Works (AN), Tustin Brewing (TU). The Bruery also has a bottle and sample shop in the Orange Circle, and if you want a craft beer bar there's Haven (OR) and Playground (SA).

Visiting Laguna Beach for a week - need recommendations

Not Mexican or southern BBQ, but some places in Laguna Beach I like a lot: Three Seventy Common, Broadway by Amar Santana (cocktails!!), House of Big Fish and Ice Cold Beer, Scandia Bakery, 230 Forest.

Visiting Laguna Beach for a week - need recommendations

I'd rather go to Sol than Javier's for that.

Visiting Laguna Beach for a week - need recommendations

Las Brisas you go to for the view. Nobody goes to Laguna Beach for Mexican food, but I'd they get the itch for Mexican while they're in Laguna Beach (and have the money), Las Brisas is where they go.

You can have the Javier's experience by taking an expensive escort to El Torito.

Stuck "New" flag

I have the same problem with this thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/845776 but not this one: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/846241

Mexican salsa?

This was my "home" market when I lived in Valley Glen ("we're not Van Nuys, we're not, we're not, we're not!"). It's a great place. You'll be addicted to the meat prices, too.

To the OP: absolutely any Mexican carniceria or supermarket will sell salsa de molcajete, both green and red, and sometimes roasted too.

strange soup at vietmanese restaurants

That's right. There are two of them, one on Bolsa and one on Westminster Ave.

I prefer cold che to hot che, myself, and Hien Khanh sells only cold che.

NYC -> LA in June: Tell Me What I'm Missing

Do you still have to make parking reservations? That was always so weird to me.

NYC -> LA in June: Tell Me What I'm Missing

I love Handsome Coffee... and I don't take sugar in it... but when I see places that refuse to put it out it rakes my back fur the wrong way.

Also, bear in mind—some people have a Thing about this—that Handsome is located in an unimaginably un-scenic part of Los Angeles (but is fantastic for commuters from south LA County/Orange County who can jump off the 5).

Ok to wear jeans at Bazaar?

Well, à part a couple of throwback dinosaur places you don't want to eat anyway (Queen Mary, anyone?), dark jeans, a cute top and heels will be fine absolutely anywhere in LA, from a taco truck to Bazaar.

Of course, men would want to reconsider the heels and maybe throw on a blazer.

strange soup at vietmanese restaurants

Try che chuoi—banana che. It's basically really loose sweet tapioca with bananas and coconut milk. I love it.

The Ranch, Anaheim - any visits?

Glad you liked it. Our service was excellent right up until a 12-top was seated, then we had to flail around trying to get our bill and have them take the Lady Visa away to pay for our meal... it was a jarring end to what would otherwise have been one of the best meals I've had in OC in a long while.

The Ranch, Anaheim - any visits?

I've been. There's no country-music vibe in the restaurant. The restaurant is upscale and dark, kind of like a more-rustic Mastro's.

I liked the food quite a lot.

Dinner near Disneyland Friday Night?

Al fresco Italian dining in a converted garage that's now Park Avenue's greenhouse where they get produce from. Open only for dinner, Tuesday through Sunday. Light dishes for the most part, some pastas, a few dishes of the day, good curated salumi selection. Excellent.

Broadway Restaurant, Laguna Beach - any visits.

The chef, the bar manager and the front-of-house manager are all from Charlie Palmer's. Whatever you do, give yourself enough time to have a cocktail or two.

My Anaheim choices...good or bad?

While I love both al-Amir and Forn al-Hara, I'd pick Forn al-Hara mostly because of the dessert selection and the fact that they'll make those addictive spinach pies right in front of you.

But there's another solution—Olive Tree. It's fast, it's easy, it's sit-down, and the food, particularly from the specials menu—is absolutely outstanding. Get the lamb if they have it—the lamb shank will make you tell stories. They dote on kids, and then you can run two doors down to Forn al-Hara for dessert.

OC Poultry is a good choice; you can even get it to go if you want, and take it back to the hotel room. I'd recommend stopping at Brianna's or Natural after and get a Mexican fruit plate for dessert. (I like Natural better, but Brianna's is RIGHT NEXT DOOR.)

I don't normally dis-recommend places, but I'm going to just say not to go to Döner-G, which is in the same plaza. The food is not very good, it's quite expensive for what it is, and you'll have a better time at OC Poultry and Brianna's.
