It's my wife's 50th but she doesn't like Lamb's Brains

What about Piccolo Venezia in Astoria? Super old-school Italian, with old-fashioned waiters and decor. I haven't been in years, but it used to be very good.

Who carries Walker's crisps in Park Slope/Prospect Heights?

Thank you!

Who carries Walker's crisps in Park Slope/Prospect Heights?

My usual spots--Key Food, and Blue Apron--are out of the Cheese and Onion flavor. Need them as stocking stuffers. Help! TIA.

Chifa or Melograno?

Yes, we're Chang fans. Since folks seem lukewarm on both of these, any suggestions other than Matyson, Bibou, Tinto, Amada or Kanella? One of us eats no red meat, the other is a meat eater who doesn't like French, Indian or seafood. Thanks again.

Chifa or Melograno?

My partner is not a seafood fan, so I don't think Little Fish is the answer. Thanks, though.

Chifa or Melograno?

We're Brooklynites who just decided to go to Philadelphia tomorrow for the weekend. Having read through a lot of the messages here on favorite places, I was able to get last-minute reservations at both Chifa and Melograno for Saturday night. (No luck at Matyson.)

If it's between the two, what do people recommend? We have such good Italian in NYC that I'm leaning toward Chifa, only because it seems unique, and I've never been to a Garces restaurant. But it's really all about the food. I don't care about the price, and both menus appeal. Is there a clear winner here?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Help: Need Japanese or Pan Asian restaurant to suit a bunch of picky eaters

I'm trying to find a place for a birthday celebration. Birthday girl loves Japanese, Korean, and Pan Asian. Not a fan of Chinese. One of the guests doesn't eat pork, one of the other guests is older, doesn't eat fish, and has a low tolerance for "strange" (she hated Aburiya Kinnosuke and Koreatown.) Looking for medium priced (entrees 20-25), any neighborhood is fine.

I'm thinking Kuma Inn, but am blanking after that. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Disappointing dinner at Saul

I was at Saul for a birthday celebration on Friday night, and we couldn't have been more disappointed. Really lackluster dishes, and the entrees were served lukewarm. We had the tuna tartare, the gnocchi, the bass, the cod and the chicken special. Nothing stood out, and the cod was downright bad. Has anyone else been lately? I have to believe they were just having an off night, with all the acclaim they've gotten. But I was wishing we'd gone to Grocery or Dressler or al di la. Very disappointing.

can you get flammkuchen nyc?

Yes! The Bar Room at the Modern. It's delicious. No scallions, but everything else that you describe.

Fornino Park Slope--Thumbs Up!

It's funny, we ate at Fornino last night, too, and couldn't have had a more different impression. (Except to agree that the artichoke didn't have much presence.) I thought it was thoroughly mediocre. We had the artichoke, a margarita pizza, and the duck papardelle. Very little flavor all around, and I was not a fan of the pizza crust. We make grilled pizza all the time in the summer, so, like jinx, we were really ready to like it. But I found it heavy and flavorless. Also the shortest wine pours I've come across in a long time, in the wines by the glass. It's too bad, we live close by and had high hopes.

Brand of olive oil served at Babbo?

Mario Batali always used Frantoia on his show, and I've seen bottles of it at Lupa, so would bet he uses it at Babbo, too. You can find it at Safeway for about $22.

40th birthday party in Hamburg

Linguafood, I just wanted to say that we had the party this weekend, at the private room in Nil (Nil #6). It was absolutely great. Thank you so much for the recommendation. The food was delicious, the decorations and the service were first rate, the birthday girl had a fantastic time. Thank you so much!

40th birthday party in Hamburg

Thank you so much. Really appreciate the help.

40th birthday party in Hamburg

Thanks. It wouldn't be too formal?

40th birthday party in Hamburg

Hi,

I'm organizing a 40th birthday celebration in Hamburg in May, and wondered if anyone had suggestions for restaurants that might have private rooms for something like this. It would be a group of about 25 people, looking for good food and congenial atmosphere, but not formal. Could be a traditional restaurant, could be small plates/wine bar, could be a bar with food. Thanks very much for your help.

What should I order at Aburiya Kinnosuke?

We're going tonight. 2 adventurous eaters, 2 not so much. I remember that the tofu is amazing, but what are some other favorites? Thanks.

What to order at Otto

I would add the pane frattau, which is pizza with pecorino and a fried egg on top, and the sformato, which is like a parmesan souffle.

SF hound seeks advice

Franny's would be worth a look. Outstanding wood oven pizza, plus beautiful Italian appetizers, crostini and pastas.

Boerum Hill Food Company closed

Zilli's closed last week. It's really a shame it never caught on. Nice people, good food, super affordable. And yeah, I don't know what the deal is with the new Italian place between 2nd and 3rd, or the place that moved into Cocotte's space.

Martinis on LES

I'm looking for a place to have early drinks tomorrow night, where I can treat my friend the martini-lover to a well-made cocktail. I'd been thinking East Side Company Bar, but they don't open until 7. Any suggestions? Is the bar at Allen and Delancey still worth it, after the management change? I couldn't find their cocktail menu on the site anymore. All thoughts welcome, thanks.

al di la is open for lunch

We were there on Sunday, too. I had the soup with greens and kidney beans. So simple, but amazingly good. It's such a nice vibe during the day--very relaxed, people reading the paper. Not the mad bustle of the dinner crowd.

nice dinner in non-foofy place

Trestle on Tenth is very low key and cozy, and has a really interesting selection of beers and wine.

Truffles--to serve at home..where to buy?

The Italian store in Chelsea Market has them. (Blanking on the name, sorry.) Also Urbani, online, is a good supplier. DEFINITELY buy a truffle shaver.

As for recipes, the simple cheese and cream sauce pastas work, so would a mushroom risotto. And baked eggs in a little parmesan and cream is amazing with truffles. Or, look up recipes for fonduta, which is basically Italian fondue, made with fontina instead of gruyere.

Sakura becoming sake/beer bar

Starting in November, Sakura will no longer serve sushi, and master chef Nishikawa will be gone. The owner is turning the place into a sake and beer bar, with homestyle Japanese appetizers. It's a real shame. He's an amazing sushi chef.
