Sam Salmon's Profile

radioactive matter in bluefin

Lots of Bluefin left in the Pacific-every one of them delicious!!!

If NZ Sauvignon Blanc is Best Who's Second Best?

Oops!

I forgot that I posted this-Thanks to everyone for their contributions-even the usual suspects.

FWIW-this time of years it's all about picnicking here and since I love hints of tropical fruit I adore Kiwi SB.

Vancouver 3 Day visit - on a budget

Brekkie/lunch heaven for a budget-highly recommended by many here

Where to buy Prickly Pear Juice?

Maybe one of the Latin American groceries like El Sureño on Commercial Drive (far from being a personal favourite).

Suggestion for Restaurants around Waterfront Station/Vancouver Convention Center

Are you sure it was Anatolia Express where you had the Salmon Taco?

Or was it Tacofino?

Collateral Casualties in the Sushi Wars-Cones

Anyone remember the venerable Negitoro Cone?

Not the easily folded/made in advance rolls but real hand made Cones?

Yes some Itamae will do them on occasion but more and more I'm left with stunned looks from servers and sullen mumbling from chefs when I try and order one.

If NZ Sauvignon Blanc is Best Who's Second Best?

Lots of Sauvignon Blanc on offer but IME it all pales next to the Kiwi product-any suggestions for easily available ( a loaded term I know) product?

Does Oregon SB live up to the hype?

They want upward of $25/bottle here so I'm leery.

TIA

Tibetans Tselling Tsampa in Tsquamish & Tsteveston!

Sorry for the overly cute subject line....

I first saw Tsampa for sale @ the Squamish Farmer's Market Easter Sunday and this past Sunday once again saw the operation @ Steveston.

Sadly both times I had just stuffed my face and couldn't sample the food on offer so can't offer any more info-has anyone tried it?

Vancouver, Whistler, Salt Spring, Sechelt?

I love Pasta Lupino and have had countless outstanding meals there-the service is excellent and the food even better.

FOOD Ideas Needed for a Vancouver Trip over a Week

Tojo has gone for the tourist buck and is no longer worth the bother-or expense.

Looking for lobster in a hurry!

Atlantic or Caribbean?

Vij's to branch out south of 49th ....... in Seattle

I wonder if they'll have bugs on the menu?

Pure Bread 'n The Hood!!

Just picked up a copy of the latest Farmer's Market schedule from Pure Bread deep in Function Junction.

Once again they're poised to break loose and spread their message of bready goodness to a hood near you!

Despite often being found in a milieu notorious for gross overcharging Pure Bread has never seen as expensive as some o other operations-probably because the stuff is So Darned Good.

Anyway if my math is correct (far from a given) they are due for over 160 appearances this season including every market @ Ambleside, Squamish & Whistler as well as the usual suspects and This Just In-cameo appearances in distant Ladner.

Cheapish Near Pender and Granville?

¡Qué lástima!

Cheapish Near Pender and Granville?

Last I was catching the bus outside Smile someone with a dog just marched right in-and wasn't thrown out-he took a seat @ the counter and the dog slumped down on the floor.

FWIW I've never had a bad meal @ Zero One-a few ordinary ones to be sure but that's it.

curious re: VCC downtown Vcvr (and any other cooking school where one can eat)

VCC has had a dining room for ages-since back in another century when I took waiter training there.

http://www.vcc.ca/
Reservations by phone only. Call 604.443.8479.-Lunch seatings are between 11:30 a.m. and noon. Dinner seatings are between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

There's also the place @ the entrance to Granville Island -had mixed results there m'self but many love it

Korean rice

Korea is one of the world's largest importers of rice and trying to find a Korean grown product anywhere else is a challenge.

I actually found some locally but the prices was excessive and the store a dump-totally off putting.

Durian <-- King of Fruits!

I find it over rated-not bad just unexceptional.

My mouth is on fire! Memorable spicy food moments. [moved from Not About Food]

Just managed to score a bottle of Ebesse Zozo hot sauce-made here in British Columbia by a Togolese immigrant not easy to find.

Very reminiscent of sauces found in rural kitchens throughout the Caribbean with it's layers of complexity no matter what the ingredients to hand.

http://awassi.net/

And just to help celebrate also picked up a mass produced bottle of Jamaican style yellow sauce-slow/steady & deadly!

What foods did you once love but now can’t eat?

Fresh Tomatoes-used to be crazy for them but now.....maybe twice a year.

Kits Happenings

Re:Tera V-Rare News- I does love me a good veggie burger!

As to Andale's Peace to their Blighted Ashes.

Spice Up Exclusive Indian Cuisine

FWIW Little India isn't a place to look for anything but the lowest quality mass produced/over salted examples of Punjabi cooking.

Further south @ 57/Main is Best Quality Sweets a place that uses only quality ingredients and is 100% vegetarian.

Best Indian in Burnaby

My bet is that everyone here will tell you to try Turkish @ Anatolia's Gate instead-they do have curry but there are more original dishes on the menu.

Lunch @ New Nuba in Kits Today

Slouched into the new Nuba @ 3116 W Broadway today-sat in a corner near the kitchen gazed around & the flashbacks came fast & heavy.

Of course this was the old Orestes and the feel is still there in part from the redecorating the Nuba crew has done and partially my own sentimentality-Yes Those Were The Days.

Ordered Najib's special wrap and a bowl of soup-both great but they're adding more salad to the wraps and it makes for a messy meal-a plate would have been more suitable but the food was tasty and that's what counts.

Service was prompt & circumspect the only jarring note being some character dressed like he was about to change a truck tire (as I would have been back in the 70's).

It's certainly worth your while to stop by even if you don't remember the Greek incarnations or more recently Andy's brawling bar-the space looks/feels great.

Restaurant without TV screen for Sunday?

Nuba on Hastings St has no TVs-or didn't last I was in-ditto Main & 3rd -and now Nuba Kits is open!

Spice Up Exclusive Indian Cuisine

I had lunch there service was good-food so/so.

Not eating much Indian these days so little desire to return.

Restaurant recs for New Westminster, BC

Spent some time in New West last year and found it to be still pretty much a culinary wasteland-I'd head to Anatolia's Gate in Burnaby-not all that far.
