Best Takeout Burmese Tea Leaf Salad in the Richmond?
I can't say which is best, but this truly is a dilemma you're unlikely to have outside of Burma/Myanmar. My mind boggles at how lucky we are to live in the Bay area.
Fire at China Village (Albany)
Happy Golden Bowl now has a LARGE banner up saying they too are closed for remodeling, reopening 5/4.
This is getting really weird.
Good Japanese/Asian Store in Berkeley, San Jose or Santa Clara?
I'm sorry for thinking that the UC one was between those places, I'm sure the OP wasn't looking any other altermnatives.
Good Japanese/Asian Store in Berkeley, San Jose or Santa Clara?
The Berkeley one is smaller and more difficult to park at than the UC one, I haven't been to the Saratoga location.
Just trying to offer more options, sorry if I stepped on your toes.

Daiso in Union City might be worth a stop if you are diving from Berkeley to SJC. The store is huge and has quite an assortment of dishes and cookware. Most items are $1.50,
There are also a dozen restos worth eating at in the center.

Ichiban Kan is a Japanese store just up San Pablo Ave from Tokyo Fish Market and also has a lot of dishware in a "Yen Store" format.

The good news is that I have seen construction work going on at L&L.
As to why so many fires - have you ever tried to start a flood?
ISI Whip Question [moved from General Topics]
Wait the week, you can't handhold the cylinder on, and it would make a dandy little rocket around the kitchen.
Gyoza Express - nice new addiiton to the nabe with 50% opening discounts [San Pablo]
Went there last Friday night with the wife and kids, had a few assorted rolls, all quite good, (spicy tuna, eel/avocado, salmon skin, shrimp/avocado, tuna) they were well made and presented. We also had the chicken karaage ( ab it overdone, but experience should fix that) and agedashi dofu, adequately done.
I'd rather have the Vietnamese place that was on the other side of the supermarket back, but I'm happy enough with this place.
San Pablo: Molcasalsa (of SoCal) - Tasty Halal carne asada ... open 24 hours
Tried this place for dinner one night, had a couple of dinner combos that left us underwhelmed. Light on flavor and the watery. lackluster salsas didn't help at all. Kaliente down the street is so much better.
February 2012, Grocery Outlet - Is it worth it anymore?
They're pretty much following the growth path of Trader Joes. When I first moved to LA my local TJ's was in an old gas station, grungy and full of an ever changing variety of goods that were pretty hit and miss. Odd small quantity lots were their stock in trade, this doesn't work as you expand, you need large quantities to supply lots of stores.
There are still things that I go to GO for, but it isn't the happy hunting ground it once was. I'm looking for the next entrepreneur at the bottom of the curve now.

Restaurant Impossible and Kitchen Nightmares - How Many Survive?
I find the most worrying kitchens are usually found in Indan restos, they're either great or horrible.

Looking for Kauai recs - traveling with a fairly adventurous 2.5 year old
I'm lucky enough to have a very productive Meyer lemon in my back yard so I'm pretty spoiled by that.
We're arriving on Friday afternoon so I'm going to try and hit the big market Saturday morning and fill in after that.
The group isn't bad, we've all traveled together before except for the littlest one, my mom will be seeing her for the first time so I don't imagine her feet will touch the ground for the week. Both kids are really social and love to go places so they are easy to travel with. All the adults are adventurous so it all works out.
What's the deal with the discount card? My in-laws have a Costco card so we're covered there.

Things didn't really get that much better after he left, later health dept inspections were just as worrying.

Aha! Another vacation thrift shopper. I love hitting resale shops while traveling, I always manage to pick up something useful for next to nothing. My weapons grade stainless steel teapot from England, pastry molds from France etc.

We're looking at 3-4 bedroom houses in/near Poipu. It will be wifey and I, 3yo son, 10 month old daughter, wifey's parents and my mom. We'll have a car so we can go anywhere. I'll do most of the marketing and cooking, from what I hear the big farmers market is Saturday at the community college, any other recs?

Narrowing it down to a few rentals either Poipu or Kapaa.

How did your trip work out? We're heading to Kauai with our 3yo in March, he's far from picky and will eat his weight in fresh pineapple.
Any outstanding recs? Horrible experiences?
Kitchenaid Stand mixer - which size to get?
About 10 shots into the gallery is a flame paint job that makes the stick on one lok like stickers...

Porchetta help!
I actually had to trim some of the loin away to get a nice even roll, I have a couple of stir fry meals worth left.
Porchetta help!
I also thin sliced a fennel bulb and used it and blood oranges for the stuffing.
Porchetta help!
I did the BA recipe for Christmas but I used a whole belly and a whole pork loin. I was expecting 18 so I wanted plenty. It looked like a leg laying on the counter, I cut it in half and it pretty much filled a half sheet pan.
I doubt that the recipe as written would feed 14 hungry people. I'd do 1.5 times the recipe for your crowd. The beauty is that you can cook the whole thing a day ahead and just rewarm to serve. I did mine to 145/150 and it came out perfectly fine, be prepared for some smoky times during the high heat blast.
Good Tamales in Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville?
I've been to the new location and talked with the owner, he's still running both locations. I was told originally that he was going to close the old spot.
Best Standing Rib Roast Recipe
If you're opening either type of oven every 10 minutes to baste you'll be lucky to get the temp above about 200 degrees no matter what it is set for.
Suet in the East bay?
If you're really desperate I have some extra I got from them. I bought two pounds and made my puds today and I was going to freeze the extra and make more in the spring.
