Organic Valley Pasture Butter

I thought I might find it at Whole Foods here on the peninsula - no green foil wrapping anywhere!

"The store had a sale on it plus a $1 off coupon"

...would you please fill in the name of the store? Thanks.

buying acme bread in sunnyvale?

Sunnymount Produce on El Camino at Grape Avenue in Sunnyvale carries a small variety of Acme breads (I believe they're delivered after 11AM each day).
Sunnymount is a produce market that's been in place since we moved to the area in the early 70's. If you are careful about what you purchase (often some of the produce is over-ripe, but more often, it's totally under-ripe), you'll do well.

H&H frozen bagels/bialys on peninsula?

Oh, yes, we've been enjoying theirs for years...they are good, and also fresh, but not quite New York bagels though!
Thanks for the tip about Draeger's in San Mateo.

H&H frozen bagels/bialys on peninsula?

We don't get into Manhattan often enough and would like to try the frozen, if only we knew where to find them! Any leads?

Where can I purchase Plugra butter in the SF area? Trader Joe's has discontinued it.

I found it at Whole Foods, on Stevens Creek in Cupertino. Cost was $3.99 a pound, I believe.

Similar to Plugra Butter, in flavor and price?

I found the red-wrapped, pound packages of Plugra (unsalted) at Whole Foods on Stevens Creek in Cupertino. I think I paid $3.99.

BJ's "Jordan Marsh" Blueberry Muffins

In the early 60's I worked in the main Jordan's building two evenings a week after school. On Saturdays I worked all day, and my morning assignment was to run down to the bakery and pick up fresh, warm blueberry muffins for my department; butter pats were included, and I'm sure early shoppers wondered where the wonderful smell of fresh-baked muffins was coming from. (We were comfortably ensconced in the lingerie department stock room!) Those were the best muffins I've ever had...

Blue Bottle store at Ferry Building

Has it opened yet? Last I saw they were waiting for equipment to arrive...this was a number of months ago!

Mistral is gone from Ferry Building?

According to the Inside Scoop at the Chronicle today:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article...
Mistral has gone. Last I'd heard, they were renegotiating their lease. If they're really out, it's a great loss...stopping there for the makings of a quick dinner was such a nice option.

source for Yehuda matzoh

We've purchased Yehuda from Mollie Stones in Palo Alto in the past, but they no longer are interested in carrying it during the year. Is there any market (San Francisco to San Jose) that carries it? We prefer it because it is baked to a darker color, giving it a great taste, particularly in matzoh brie!

Grocery on Kona coast

Thanks, easily amused! That's what we wanted to hear.

Grocery on Kona coast

We stayed at the Mauna Lanai resort a year or two ago, and a new upscale grocery was being built in a nearby shopping center. We plan to return to that wonderful area and wonder if the new store ever opened. Any mention of their specialties would be appreciated!

What are you eating to start your day on wed March 5th?

Freshly-squeezed grapefruit/orange juice, scrambled egg, 1 piece Passover egg matzoh with unsalted butter. Yummy!

Plugins

Tonight I'm not seeing any plugin messages...will keep a log when I see them again...I suspect it was for a video ad, but really can't remember!

Plugins

During the morning and afternoon when I check in to Chowhound see what's new, all is well. Late afternoon and evening, I get a message across the top of my screen saying that I need plugins to see all media that's available on the page.

I'm using firefox 2.0.0.12. I wonder why the message only appears in the evening (I'm located in northern California and using Mac OS X version 10.4.11.) Do I need these plugins? Will I harm my (elderly) iMac by downloading them?

Pastries at Cocola, Santana Row, San Jose

I'm not a fan of Cocola Bakery pastries. They look like they should be wonderful, but regardless of type, they lack flavor. Check out Shokolaat, on University Avenue in Palo Alto. My husband stopped in and brought home the most beautiful croissants we've seen in quite a long time; they were buttery and brown and perfectly delicious. He also brought two of their Danish pastries; these were very pretty, topped with fresh berries after baking instead of the usual cooked fruit. I felt they were missing the yeast taste that I associate with a good Danish and suspect they were made with croissant dough. Tasty, but still not the Danish I'm looking for.

Truth in labeling - Jell-O pumpkin spice pudding artificial flavor

rw, I thought of you yesterday, as I sat in the Time-Warner building at Columbus Circle, New York...eating a pumpkin doughnut, of all things, at Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bakery http://www.shopsatcolumbuscircle.com/... Somehow remembered that you always mention looking for pumpkin-flavored delights at this time of the year.
Also purchased an incredible house-baked croissant, containing a few slices of ham, a few slices of French Gruyère-style cheese, with a bit of butter on one side of the roll, a bit of mayo (I think) on the other side. Made for mighty good eating on an extremely loooooong flight back to SFO last night. Hope you enjoy searching out more of your seasonal favorite flavor! yes, yes, I know this probably belongs on the Manhattan board.........

Lobster and clams on the Cape in early November

Thanks so much. That is exactly the kind of place I'm looking for! We'll be visiting the wildlife sanctuary in Wellfleet, if it's still open and the weather is kind; this will be our lunch that day.

Lobster and clams on the Cape in early November

Will be visiting the Cape (Orleans) in early November for several days and would really like to enjoy a steamed/boiled lobster for lunch or dinner. Also, some moist fried clams with bellies. I know most if not all of the clam shacks close down early in the fall. Can you suggest a restaurant that would satisfy the cravings of a girl from Dorchester, now a woman living in California? Willing to drive, perhaps Provincetown? Thanks for your help!

Really good, ultra simple summer fruit cake (2 years later)

I'm sure using peaches would be wonderful - peel them first, though! We bought a few too many peaches this weekend, and I'm eying them with a thought to making another cake with peaches and blueberries (I really love fresh summer blueberries!). Let us know how it turns out!

Really good, ultra simple summer fruit cake (2 years later)

Yes, I inverted twice...AND, it all stayed together! It helped that I had buttered the pan, lined it with parchment and buttered again.

Really good, ultra simple summer fruit cake (2 years later)

My hat's off to Sir Gawain, who two years ago shared his easy recipe for a yummy summer fruit cake. I made it yesterday, using fresh blueberries and local apricots. It's so easy - two bowls, one pan, one spatula. I dried the berries before putting them on top. It was wonderful this morning for breakfast also...

Slow-roasted pork

Thanks, everybody. You've given me lots of ideas to explore and I'll report back on my results - this may take a while, but my pork project should make my family very happy in the coming months! I especially like the suggestions for using leftovers in tacos and "fake-barbecue sandwiches".

Slow-roasted pork

The SF Board has a review of a wonderful-sounding meal at Canteen. The meat course was Pork Prime Rib (Niman Ranch), described as "Pork should always taste this good, slow-roasted at a low temperature for two hours = sweet and tender to the bone". I'm wondering if I could get the same results at home. I've made braised beef short ribs in the past and loved the texture of the meat after a couple of hours in a covered Crueset in the oven - can I do the same with pork chops? Or, if this is a rib roast, what would a "low temperature" be? Thanks in advance for your help!

Pescheria Report (long)

Pescheria, out in Noe Valley, was a great new find for us. We love seafood, and they know how to please! Thanks to their full bar, we enjoyed two perfectly concocted Bombay Sapphire martinis while perusing their small but complete menu. My DH started with wonderfully tender grilled Monterey Bay calamari, served in a warm coriander/ lemon sauce. My oysters on the half shell with a zippy mignonette appeared to have been harvested just minutes before. His zupa de mer arrived in a hot terrine; it was a rich soup/stew full of seafood and vegetables...we used our bread to scoop up the last delicious drop! My plate of squid ink pasta, with clams and mussels, was full of flavor and also a feast for the eyes. The pasta was slightly chewy, and coated nicely with a deeply flavored sauce.

With our espresso we couldn't resist tiramisu. Served simply in a glass dish, it was fantastic - warm, creamy, with a coffee caramel sauce. A nice portion for two.

After a perfectly-paced, well-served early dinner, we hopped back on the J Church and went on to Davies Hall, where we were served a duet by none other than Michael Tilson Thomas (on piano) and Alexander Barantschik (on his Guarnarius violin) - followed by an outstanding performance of Mahler's #7. Great food, great music - what an evening!

My first review on Chowhound. Sorry, I completely neglected to note prices. Our dinner, with two cocktails, tax and tip, was $116.
