Ruby Watchco or Woodlot?
Best meal I have had in Toronto in years was dinner at Ruby Watchco in January...go!
Best Fish and Chips - Mississauga
It isn't very glamorous, but Applewood Fish & Chips at 1020 Burnhamthorpe Road East is really dependable and tasty. Family run...so service is great also.
Jacob and Co - what to order?
linengirl gives good advice here. I would concur about the sides not being all that. I do recall a braised onion on one of the times I ate there that was stellar. I had an aged bavette that was by far the best steak I have ever eaten.
Holy Chuck... Priest has nothing on this place.
It isn't a Martin's bun...I'm from NJ and they are the BEST. But it is very close approximation. I went for lunch yesterday and had a single cheesburger with bacon and fries. Sublime! And for me I don't want to schlepp my food away and let it get cold and soggy, especially the fries. HC has enough seating so you can stay and eat.
Good midtown lunch spots
Here is another thumbs up for either Quince and Tabule. I work nearby and they are both consistently good. Also for Szechaun, try C'est Bon.
Ruby Watch Co.
Went last Saturday night for the first time and was very impressed. Service was impeccable. And cocktails which I find a weak spot in most Torontonian spots were excellent. The dining room had a wonderful buzz and the good start become even better as they let us linger over the courses and wine pairings. Every course was delicious and portions were generous...very highly recommended!

Another thumbs up here for Gabardine!
Davisville Diner?
I've eaten breakfast and lunch here both a couple of times. Walked out in disgust at a revolting fish and chips lunch special, but then a boy can dream. Oh, the diners of New Jersey that I grew up eating in...nothing like that here.
Olympic Cheese Mart in Markham
It was excellent when I worked in the area a couple of years ago. In fact...better than the SLM location for what I was looking for. They don't suffer fools...and make killer sandwiches which are a great value.
crispy Szechuan beef?
I've only been to the northern location one once, but it was the same good food. The service at the southern location can be spotty, but that's what I find to be the norm in Toronto.
crispy Szechuan beef?
Haven't had any dramatic inconsistencies so far, but have been happily surprised when I try something new on the menu, even though I mostly default to the Crispy Ginger Beef. Thanks for the recos!
Pan fried dumplings, Moo Shu, and Broccoli with garlic are good choices as well.
crispy Szechuan beef?
At 2140 Yonge Street, C'est Bon does a really good Crispy Ginger Beef. Too good in fact.

Has anyone read Alan Vernon's review of Khao San Road? [moved from Ontario board]
My sad conclusion as well. Why can't we get decent Thai food in TO.
Review - Falasca S.P.Q.R.
I wanted to be impressed, but wasn't. We picked up some pizza and two versions or arincini the other day for $25. Pizza was decent, but not very flavorful and didn't have the char I love on the crust. The arincini was dry, under seasoned and leaden.
Agree with Lazar, more of a snack than a meal at this point. Curious as to see the entire menu and dining room open...
Quince on Yonge near Elginton
Enjoyed an impromptu solo lunch their yesterday...quite delicious.
Chicken croquettes on little puddles of dijon mustard were hot, crispy and well flavored. And the special of shrimp ravioli with ramps and wild mushrooms was light, fresh and perfectly cooked. A glass of chardonnay and a little pot of hummus with some crusty bread sealed the deal.
I'm going back soon.

I work just down Yonge a few blocks...looking forward to checking it out. No great pizza nearby, and their gelato spot is impeccably run.
Yonge & Davisville - Lunch Recs Needed!
C'est Bon has pretty good Szechaun a few blocks north and for a special treat do not miss La Bomboche, an exceptional Patisserie

Excellent lunch in Mississauga?
I would second that...Tomken and Eglington, but look closely...it's easy to miss.
NYC/NJ Chowhounder coming to Toronto
Is is too late to ask you to bring a decent cheese steak sandwich?
decadent, funky business lunch
I'd second the Origin reco...might just be the right mix for you.
Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives (Canadian Version)
I stopped going to Mars a couple of years ago when we sat in the back and saw a large area of mold on the wall...the place is filthy.
Mortons is a rip off.
Defintely should have tried Jacobs & Co. The table side Ceasar salad is great...

ISO: Great scallops in GTA (prefer west end resto)
What a great request...now you have piqued my interest as well. And I am in the West End also...
Does anybody still eat at La Castile? They must have scallops on the menu.

Origin for birthday lunch?
Thanks for your recos fellow Hounds... they were well advised.
We had a great time, starting off with a nice rose sparkler from Italy. Tostones, spanish fries, cod fritters and snap peas to share. Then some salads and the delicious fresh mozz with pesto and a confit of cherry tomatoes. Cod with miso and desserts...both very well executed. Carmalized brioche was what the birthday boy had...
Nice buzz in the dining room and good service also.

Any recos for dumplings, moo shu, spicy shredded beef, onion pancakes, etc in Mississauga?
Harbour 60 or Jacob & Co.
Another vote for Jacob & Co. here...and have a drink in the first floor lounge first.
Looking for a cute cafe in Mississauga
Another vote for Apricot Tree here. Have a schnitzel...and dessert.

flavored non-sweetened seltzer water?
Very interesting. Thanks for the post.
Just can't understand why this type of product is so common in the states and yet so hard to come by here in the GTA. I lived in Manhattan for ten years and lived on bottled flavored unsweetened seltzer. Some brands were as little as .39 cents a bottle as I recall...
Where is the best place to buy cheese in Mississauga?
I got ripped off at the Cheese Boutique after asking for some aged Cantal. It was very young, maybe not even Cantal at all. Not going to go back probably...
