Your favorite Trader Joes salads

I just returned from a trip to TJ's looking for a salad to have for lunch, and there were so many that I had a hard time deciding which one to get. What are your favorite salads from Trader Joes?

Quick Cilantro Tasting Question - what percentage taste soap?

I was fine with cilantro until I was making salsa one day and opened the top of the food processor. What I was hit with was an antiseptic, sharp, unpleasant aroma that affected how I was able to tolerate cilantro from that day forward. It's not so much a soapy taste -- it's the odor that smells like a just-sanitized bathroom. I can take a little cilantro in some dishes, but if something has an overwhelming cilantro flavor or aroma, count me out.

Simple food which you love

I've had it for breakfast, for lunch, for dinner, for a snack. :o)
Whenever I can get really fresh radishes. Enjoy!

Simple food which you love

A slice from a fresh baguette, spread with soft fresh butter, topped with slices of crispy fresh radish, sprinkled with sea salt. Mmmmmmmm.....

Is there a bakery that does gluten free birthday cakes in or around Portland?

Crave in Lake Oswego makes awfully good gluten free baked goods.

Most memorable cooking disaster?

Years ago, my dear husband wanted to make Caesar Salad. He was working on the dressing when I heard him screaming from the kitchen, "How do you get this stupid egg in the water???" The instructions called for him to "put an egg in a spoon and gently lower it into a pot of boiling water." In his defense, the instructions did NOT say to keep the egg intact. It was a great sight to see him trying to keep the gloopy egg whites in that little spoon!

Reservations needed in Barcelona?

Thanks for that very frank and helpful advice. We don't mind waiting. We like simple food that can be spectacular in its simplicity. I got a kick out of the Chinese food post -- don't think that will be our issue at all. :o)

Reservations needed in Barcelona?

Sorry, didn't mean to be vague. By "destination" restaurant, I guess that I mean high-end, fancy -type places. Tapas and pintos places -- places that are more casual yet still good -- are more our style. It's good to know that there are other markets that are nearby. Thanks for your information!

Urgent Baking Advice Needed!! I think my recipe is wrong!

I would guess that they got the numbers reversed -- 1/2 cup butter (1 stick). At least that's what I would do. Good luck!

Reservations needed in Barcelona?

That sounds like a great idea! I'm sure we will visit there more than once. We are staying near Plaza Catalunya -- is La Boqueria within walking distance?

Reservations needed in Barcelona?

My family (including our two teenage kids and a family friend) will be traveling to Barcelona in December. Is it really necessary to make reservations in advance at any restaurants? We don't need any "destination" restaurants -- just places where we can get good food and a good sense of the local flavor for our group of five. Incidentally, we will be staying at an apartment with a kitchen, so some of our meals can be eaten there -- either brought in or prepared. Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom!

Best store bought healthy bread?

I'm a big fan of Dave's Killer Breads. Lots of choices, but all very good. Their motto -- "Just Say No to Bread on Drugs". There's a pretty cool backstory to this bread involving Dave, a man who had a not-so-stellar past who turned things around and now makes really great breads. And while it's not "bread" per se, I do want to put in a plug for Dave's amazing Sin Dawg. http://daveskillerbread.com/

Totally agree.

What do you look for in a good matzo ball soup?

This just showed up in our newspaper today --

What do you look for in a good matzo ball soup?

My son loves the sinkers. My daughter loves the floaters. It's always a guessing game which ones we'll end up with. That said, the soup itself is quite substantial. I use the same veggies as you do, however after cooking the broth for hours, I discard the bird and save the veggies. I then puree the veggies into the soup. Makes it substantial and yummy. If you like clear broth, you won't like my soup. But it's a darn fine soup.

fried eggs!

Believe it or not, there was a thread about what folks call these eggs a while back!

Recommendations for the Cooking Channel?

Absolutely two big thumbs up for Luke Nguyen. His show is fascinating and authentic and completely charming. Well, except for that one time he ate a raw, fertilized duck egg. I had to cover my eyes for that....

I Can't Believe I'm Posting About A Commercial, But...

My current favorite is The Entrance from Heineken. I don't drink beer, but this commercial brings me to the TV every time it's on.

Best Houston Burgers

I just returned from a trip back home to Houston, and I had a fantastic burger at Ruggles Bakery and Grill in Rice Village. I know, it's not a burger joint nor a greasy spoon, but that really was one fine burger.

Have you ever OD'd on a food? And if you did, did you ever recover?

I'm giggling at the thought of having to chew a piece of popcorn to be polite. That's really polite!!

Have you ever OD'd on a food? And if you did, did you ever recover?

It wasn't something I ate, but when I was making salsa many years ago, I took the top off the mini-chopper that I was using. Got blasted in the face with cilantro smell. Haven't enjoyed cilantro since.

The Spaghetti Incident would be an awesome name for a band.

cake wrecks

Every morning, I go to my computer to check my email and to read Cake Wrecks. My kids and I were fortunate to see her and her husband when she came to town, so we're groupies. Love that site!

We call them Gypsy Eggs. What do you call them?

That reminds me of what we called those chocolate jimmies, sprinkles, whatever they are called -- we always called them "chocolate hot dogs."

We call them Gypsy Eggs. What do you call them?

I've really enjoyed reading the charming family stories that go along with the unique names of foods that we ate as kids. Thanks to everyone for posting!
