Signs of a NOT Authentic Chinese Restaurant

Haha.. I love this post. It is hilarious! I would say you have covered most of the key attributes. In addition to that, maybe seeing the following dishes on the menu: Egg Foo Young, Chow Mein (served with fried noodles) and Chop Suey (served with rice). I currently live in the midwest and that's pretty much the standard. Also having "Brown Rice" is another one too and, on the East Coast, for those who are health conscious having "steamed vegetables with your choice of meat and sauce on the side!"!!

Back in NYC for the weekend. Any Reco?

Hi Guys, I am coming back for the 3 rd time after leaving NY about 11 months ago. I am interested in trying Chinese, Japanese and Thai food and I was wondering if you guys have any good suggestions. I will be staying at a midtown hotel so anything close to Grand Central will help. I would prefer some place that's nicer and more comfortable and if the food is authentic, it will help too. Can you let me know? Thanks in advance.

P.S. I have been to Sakagura, Soba Totto. Aburiya Kinnosuke, Hakkasan, Red Farm, and Zaab Else the last few trips....hopefully it will provide you with some idea on what I am looking for ( ie not Chinatown..haha)

Quick update for you. I went to Katy's Dumplings a few weeks ago and bought their frozen dumplings. They were pretty tasty. (I got Pork and Cabbage).

I also bought smoked chicken (flavor was good but a little dry) and spicy beef tendon (very good). I will have to go back and try other dishes.

Authentic Shanghai Restaurant near Chicago

I finally made it to Shanghai Terrace a few days ago. I only ordered dim sum which were good. I think a few of the dimsums had a lot of starch on the wrapper (or it might have been the wonton soup) that I didn't like so much. I remember the Duck Salad was very good too.

Service was excellent and I wish I had ordered entrees. For those of you who have visited Shanghai Terrace for dinner, what are the good entrees to order?

Where Can I Find the Best and Most Authentic HK Dim Sum?

Thanks for the feedback. I prefer new style dim sum so I think I will like Sea Harbour better. If you are in NYC next time, try to go to Red Farm and let us know what you think of it. I have to say not everything is good but their dim sum items are generallyof good quality. The chef tends to make the dim sums in animal shapes so they are really cute to look at. I am sure you have seen them on-line.

Chinese Dim Sum + Taiwanese snacks in the LA /Orange County Area

Thanks! Yeah.. International Mall is no fun but it's the only thing I can get. A few folks have told me to go to Chicago Chinatown for Taiwanese food but I am still not convinced it's as good as LA's.

As to your question on Pork Chop Over Rice, I like the plain ones. Looks like Old Country has most of the items I like, I will try to go back again next time! Sounds like I can skip Kang Kang's then... I think I should be ok with that since I will only be in the LA area for a couple of days.

Chinese Dim Sum + Taiwanese snacks in the LA /Orange County Area

Hi Guys, I will be going to LA for vacation next month. I wish to go to an authentic dim sum restaurant. I have been to Sea Harbour and Elite Restaurants (I liked Sea Harbour better). Do you have any other suggestions?

Also, for Taiwanese food and snacks, do you have any good recommendations? I know I may be asked later so I will spell out specifically, I like Taiwanese style mini hot pots, Porridge with side dishes, Pork Chop Over Rice, Meat Ball (Bah Wan) and Oyster/Intestine Noodle Threads (Oh-Ah/Dua Deng Mee-Sua).

By the way, a friend of mine told me Kang Kang's Food Court has good snacks. Is that right? Any thoughts you have will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Where Can I Find the Best and Most Authentic HK Dim Sum?

Thanks for the input, Chandavkl. I will have to post on the LA board to solicit for your advice on where to go for Dim Sum. I have been to Sea Harbour many times and still couldn't find an equivalent restaurant in the NYC area.

Where Can I Find the Best and Most Authentic HK Dim Sum?

TripleAxel, do you think East Harbor has better dimsum than LA (minus the beef offals since I usually don't order that dish)?

I agree with others about Hakkasan, where I visited last month when I went back to NY. The dim sums were well prepared and the service was great too! I actually liked the food at the Red Farm (it's sort of "fusion" in a way) but the ambiance is not as good as Hakkasan. Seating was cramped and I didn't like the communal table at the Red Farm.

Sorry for the last response. So far, I think the "Chinese Cafe" ("Nan-Bei-He" or 南北和 in Chinese) at the International Mall has the best weekend breakfast item. Their Dou-Hwa / Dao-Huay(Tofu Jelly), which was made with carmelized sugar syrup, was pretty good.

How about you? What's your favorite go-to place for Taiwanese Breakfast? Overall, I have to say NY has better Chinese food but I didn't move to Chicago for Chinese food so I will work around it by visiting NY and Calif more frequently :)

Do people ask you random questions…

"Do you eat dogs and cats?" because I am Chinese! Ha... talk about diversity.

Btw. the answer is "no"!

Chinese Restaurant Recommendation in Houston

Hi Guys. I will be coming to Houston this weekend again : ) (And I have been visiting every 3 to 6 months since 2010). Over the last few years I have been to a few Chinese places, specifically Yummy Kitchen and Xiong's and Cafe 101. I also loved the Little Sheep Hot Pot restaurant. Do you have any other suggestions? Please feel free to share.
I will try to make it to FuFu Cafe, Peking Restaurant and other recommended restaurants this time and in the future too! I am just trying to increase the inventory of Chinese restaurants I can go to.

Thanks in advance!

Chinese / Taiwanese Restaurants in Greater Chicago Area

I have reviewed Oriental Food House above. Also wanted to let you know that I went to a Sichuan place in Naperville called "Yu's Bistro" (not related to Yu's Mandarin). Their Sichuan dishes were pretty hot and spicy and the servers were pretty friendly. Still haven't been to Katy's and Great Wall because my relatives don't quite like the ambiance there. However, I might go on my own just to check them out in the future..

I went to the Orienal Food House a few weekends ago and it was good. I ordered the "red tofu" (pig blood tofu) soup and pork pie (ba -wan) and both were good (I didn't like the sauce they used on ba-wan but I got a few to go and used my own sweet/hot sauce at home). I also ordered rice sausage, stir fried/boiled intestines and Su Sem Soup (pig stomach soup with herbs and pearl barley). They were all pretty authentic and the owners didn't skimp on the key ingredients. It is a little far from where I live but it was not too bad of a drive via the highway. I plan to go back to stock up on Taiwanese snack items and soups on a regular basis. Some items such as pork pie and rice sausage freeze pretty well so I don't have to go every weekend :)

Thanks for the reco!!

Chinese / Taiwanese Restaurants in Greater Chicago Area

Thanks for the follow up. Not really. Believe it or not, I just arrived in the area very recently so I am still settling down (I have been coming to get ready for my move but because of work hours I have only been to Joy Yee in Evanston and was a little disappointed)! However, I was able to make it to 527 Cafe in Evanston last night and it was pretty good. I ordered the Taiwanese pork with rice ( didnt get the noodle soup since I had a 30 min drive back and it was a takeout) I noticed a lot of people ordering noodle soups and shaved ice so thats what I will try next time when I dine in.

By the way, I have been to the Great Wall before. Forgot exactly what I have ordered but when I visited with my relatives out in Du Page cty a couple of years ago, we went there as a group. I had to confirm the Chinese names of some of these restaurants (including Katys Dumpling) because they are a little different than their English names. Nontheless, over the next few months, I will keep exploring and share my thoughts :)

Thank you! This looks great! If you order anything worth noting next weekend with your family, please keep us posted. I look forward to visiting this restaurant soon myself :)

I have an insulated cooler in my car so I am planning to buy some of their frozen dumplings to try. I am sure they taste better than the mass produced ones sold at Asian Markets :)
