Ultra Low Sodium soy sauce, or making my own.

I've found that Raw Coconut Aminos (113 mg sodium per teaspoon), works well as a soy sauce sub. I'm going to try making my own though!

Graduation Dinner

What's the consensus of opinion about either Craft and Commerce or Soda and Swine?

Graduation Dinner

Sad to say - no late lunch - the graduation ceremony is at 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm ish. By the time we fight the traffic and get out of there, my guess is that it'll be 6:30 or so. And with the elderly family, I have to stay in the area. This would be so much easier if not for the holiday weekend....

Graduation Dinner

Thank you! If I up my budget..maybe to $20 or so per entree prices - does that change things significantly? I'm positive that the grandparents wouldn't be fine with happy hours (though I am forwarding that link to my kid)! I'm looking into Pizza Nova too and Tender Greens.

Graduation Dinner

Hi San Diego Chowhounds! I am in need of a little foodie help here. My kid is graduating (yay!) from USD in May (Memorial Day weekend to be exact) and I've got a bit of family coming in from around the state to be there for the ceremony. While I've yet to understand why a university would hold it's graduation on a holiday weekend, thus ensuring the frustration of all non-locals, I've still got to plan a graduation dinner on the Sunday evening of Memorial Day weekend. I will have between 10 and 15 family members for dinner. Because of the busy holiday weekend, a lot of places I've checked are not accepting reservations. Though the graduating senior, his father and I would love to hit up some of the more deliciously adventurous spots in town, the family would prefer something more...basic (heavy sigh). Not too expensive please (I've got college loans to pay back!) - maybe $15 or so per person per entree. And somewhere in San Diego, downtown, beach areas, Point Loma, or near the University would be great! Thank you in advance! If you're coming to Sonoma County I'd be happy to return the favor!

Cake?

Coming down to San Diego to help our USD student celebrate his birthday! I'm looking for a tasty, reasonably priced cake to pick up for the celebration. Haven't seen this thread yet here, but don't want to end up with a grocery store cake. Checked the website at Extraordinary Desserts and that was just ridiculous! Any ideas?

Good Eats somewhat near the University of San Diego

So funny! :)
Only the best wine country - Sonoma County, of course! With apologies to all who think their wine country is the best!

Thanks everyone! We ended up having 3 pretty good meals while in SD and liked the campus too, so all went well! Ate at Andre's Cuban and Berta's Latin American - by chance ended up right near there at meal time! Both quite good and wouldn't have found them without your help! Thanks so much!

Good Eats somewhat near the University of San Diego

Thanks for the input! To answer questions - yes we are from the Bay Area we all are spoiled by the good food here. What we don't have, is enough good "dives", where a college student can find a good meal for not a lot of cash. By the way - if you are in our city on a Friday night, go to Fort Mason - beautiful views of the bay and Off the Grid food trucks are there from 5 until 10. Nothing but fabulous food and there are typically around 15 - 20 trucks! Is there anything similar in San Diego?

We aren't specifically looking for a taqueria, but love that kind of food. We also don't mind zero ambiance as long as the food is good. Sab e lee sounds great, but you mentioned it's closed on Monday, which is our night for dinner. You've given us quite a number of places to check out - thank you!

Good Eats somewhat near the University of San Diego

Hi Fellow Foodies,

My kid and I are heading to San Diego next week so that he can take a look at USD. Will be in the area for 2 lunches and 1 dinner. Would love to take him out to something in the area that has really good food. We will eat any type of food, but can't spend a ton of money (saving it all for tuition). Are there any good taquerias in the area? Any good food truck gatherings? Don't care much about ambiance, but love good food! Thanks so much in advance!

Anything good to eat in Thousand Oaks?

Thanks so much, everyone! I'm now actually looking forward to eating this weekend! One last question - any good sushi in the TO area?

Anything good to eat in Thousand Oaks?

Hi Chowhounders, I'm coming down from San Francisco to Thousand Oaks to visit the kid at college this weekend. From past trips and from what he says there isn't much good to eat in the area. On our last trip down we went to Sabor, which was good, but not great. We really like any type of food, just good. Even love the new upscale food trucks that seem to be everywhere these days. Any recommendations? Anything yummy and fun, or even just yummy in the TO area?
Thanks so much!

Markets/Restaurants in Rome

Ok, yes, I know this question has been asked a million times, but my husband, son, his girlfriend and I are going to be in Rome next week (can you believe it!) and I literally have a list of restaurants 2 pages long! I am completely overwhelmed even looking at the list. We have an apartment on Via del Babbuino and I'd specifically like a recommendation for a first night dinner - it'll be about 8 pm when we finally get there and I don't think we'll want to walk too much of the city before food. Does anyone know of a good restaurant near Via del Babbuino? More generally, we probably have the budget for one splurge-y type dinner and others will have to be more budget minded. I'd also love to visit the Testaccio Market and any and all other farmers markets there, plus does anyone have a really good pasta or olive oil store recommendation? Lastly, I know I getting lengthy here - how does one best get this bounty home? Thanks so much in advance!

Dinner in the Financial District

As a Sonoma County girl, I'm not as familiar with the lay of the land in the city as I probably should be. I'm meeting an out of town friend for dinner tomorrow night. She's staying at the Le Meridien and I'm assuming we'll want someplace near there for dinner. I'm familiar with the Ferry Building, but is there anywhere else within an easy walk of the hotel that shouldn't be missed? Any kind of food - cost isn't really an issue. Thanks for your help!!

Los Altos lunch/dinner with sweaty teenagers!

The family and I will be in Los Altos for a soccer tournament this weekend and am looking for lunch and/or dinner spots with good food (type doesn't matter, we love everything!), but that I can bring the unshowered teenagers to. Possibly, to protect others, even a good takeout spot! Any help would be appreciated!

Father's Day Gift Certificate Near Downey

Looking for a very good to great restaurant to order a gift certificate from for Father's Day. Must be somewhere near Downey, nothing too exotic as far as cuisine. I know in the past he's liked the Fish Company, so maybe something in that genre.

Thanks so much!

Anniversary dinner in Palo Alto-ish area

I'm sorry, sometimes I think I'm clearer than I am. This does not have to be the end all special occasion restaurant. It simply is dinner on our way south for the weekend. That being said I don't want to eat crappy food on our anniversary weekend. I know we're not going to leave Sonoma County until 5 at the earliest and I just don't know what time that puts us south of the city. Could be an hour - could be 2 - hence the no reservation thing. We love all sorts of food, hard to narrow down what our favs are - in Sonoma we love La Salette, Girl and the Fig, General's Daughter, in Petaluma we love Sea, Hiro's, Vino Grigio, Risi Bisi the list goes on. Does that help? The Cuban place Bodeguito Del Medio sounds intriguing to me, we don't have a decent Cuban place up here, is that doable without a reservation? Thanks.

Anniversary dinner in Palo Alto-ish area

Thank you for all of these great suggestions. My follow up question is, which of these places would we have the best chance of getting a table relatively easily on a Fri. night without a reservation? We are not sure what time we can leave and are also unsure about traffic from the North Bay, so really can't do the reservation thing. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Anniversary dinner in Palo Alto-ish area

Hubby and I are celebrating our 20th! We're spending the weekend in Pacific Grove, and figure that it'll be time for dinner about the time we hit the Palo Alto-ish area. Being from Sonoma County, really don't know that area at all, so any help would be appreciated. Any type of food is fine, we love everything, most any price fine, as long as it's not ridiculously expensive. Thanks so much!

Dinner near H P Pavillion

Thanks so much for the help - I think we are definitely going to the dessert place, but am still looking for dinner options. La Pastaia sounds like a definite possibility, and probable winner, but am interested in hearing more about the BBQ place and any other options. Maybe something ethnic? You 'hounds are a lifesaver!

Dinner near H P Pavillion

I've done a search, but I don't know San Jose well enough to know what I'm looking at. I've got a conference at the H P Pavillion this weekend and am looking for a good (maybe even great) restaurant to have an early dinner at Friday night. It needs to be relatively near the Pavillion and not horribly expensive, but type of food is not an issue. We like pretty much everything. I've never been to the HP Pavillion, are there any places within walking distance for lunch the next day as well? Lastly, are there any places in that area that are open late for dessert?

Thanks so much in advance,

Denise

3 dinners-Zazu, Ad Hoc or Redd, & La Salette?

Hi Megan - welcome to Sonoma County, we hope you enjoy your visit. Can't help you much with the wineries - but don't know that I would drive to Santa Rosa with all of the great food there is to be had in Sonoma. I would absolutely recommend La Salette, haven't had anything but fabulous food there, but I would also highly recommend The General's Daughter and the Girl and the Fig. General's Daughter is my personal favorite and where I take everyone that is coming here from out of town. Good luck and good eating!

Lunch in Santa Rosa area?

Also owned by the Food Network's Guy Fieri is Johnny Garlics which is on Farmer's Lane at Hwy. 12. It's good, but not great, but fun. I haven't been there yet, but have heard great things about Bruno's on Fourth, which is at 1226, I think, Fourth Street, which puts it near the intersection of Farmer's Lane and Hwy. 12. Sea Thai Food, just opened up in Montgomery Village, but don't think they are open for lunch. For a quick casual lunch try Michelle Marie's in Montgomery Village too, good salads and soups and baked goodies. Enjoy your visit to Sonoma County!

Barbecuing Ribs for a Party

Your amount is probably about right, I would roast them in a slow oven - you can even do it the day before 275 for 2 hours - I use a dry rub and then all you have to do is finish them on the grill on the 4th. Turns out perfect every time - you can even smoke them as a finish as well. Enjoy!

Petaluma Breakfest Spots?

I would also suggest Della Fatoria on Petaluma Blvd., the Tea Room on Western or for more typical, yet still good breakfast fare, try Hallie's in front of the Petaluma market on Keller. BTW, don't confuse the new tea shop on Western across from the Petaluma market with the Tea Room further west on Western. I haven't heard a single good thing (unfortunately) about the tea shop, but love the Tea Room.

Know of good Mexican food caterer for Marin beach wedding?

Have you thought of Sol Food in San Rafael? I know they used to cater, haven't confirmed recently that they still do. They are Puerto Rican, I believe, not Mexican, but we've always loved the food there.

Sacramento lunch fare

Hi all. We are going to be spending the large part of this coming weekend in Sacramento at the Cherry Island Soccer complex. Big tournament! I'm looking for lunch suggestions, not expensive, but definitely good food. I will have adventurous eating teenage boys with me, so type of food is not an issue. It's got to be pretty close to the soccer complex, (corner of 28th and U) as we don't have a ton of time between games. Thanks for your help! Denise

Canyon Country/Valencia chow

My 14 yr. old and I are visiting some friends next week in Canyon Country and I would love to get some good recommendations for dinner there. Our friends are not very adventurous eaters, so they will know those places, but are there any interesting and good sushi places in that area?

Thanks in advance!
