Paducah Recs

Hello All
We'll be staying over in Paducah on our way to Branson. We're staying at the Marriott West (hwy's 24 & 60 area).. Any suggestions for dinner? Nothing fancy; just good local food and a drink. Thank you.

South Haven, MI recommendations

Although quite a ways south, if you find yourself in the New Buffalo area, drop into Pierre-Anne's Crepes. It's a unique experience with both sweet and savory crepes to die for. I'm a meat and 'taters kinda guy but I can't wait to visit there every year. You'll never forget it, believe me.

Oscoda Michigan area eats?

We always eat at Tait's in Oscoda. Good steaks and fish. Good bar. Wiltse's is also very good, especially for breakfast. AuSable Inn, as mentioned is also a good place. Just be careful because if the air conditioning is cranked up, some tables can be really cold. If you're there during the marathon, the Inn is a great place to watch the watermelon race. The locals will explain. It's a riot!

saugatuck

Not much has changed since 2009. My favorites in Saugatuck:
Marro's - Italian - excellent pasta dishes and good pizza
Phil's - don't let the outside fool you. Great for lunch
Butler Hotel - traditional, nice bar. I usually have the walleye
Wally's - fun for lunch if the weather's nice
Drug Store - an old fashion soda counter you'll never forget. Only open on weekends during school - maned by high school kids.
Overrated I think are Chequers, The White House and, especially, Toulouse.
Never been there but highly recommended: Ida Red's for breakfast (Elbo Room is good) and The Belvedere Inn.

We usually don't eat in Douglas because we like to walk but everyone raves over Everyday People Cafe.

While you're in Saugatuck, be sure to ride the Harbor Duck if the weather's good. It's good fun and the the driver/owner is corny as hell. Be sure to take home a couple of loaves of seedy salt bread. You can get it at Salt of the Earth in Fenville or at the grocery store in Douglas.

Saugatuck is lotsa fun. The above list is only a sampling of the eateries in the town. Try all you can and please report back.

heading to Detroit

Diamond Jim Brady's in the Novi Town Center is a favorite. Small, unique and cozy. They're taking reservations now; Probably a good idea as the waits can be lengthy.

Ham - shank or butt

Paulj's right about the butt having a lot more meat. Unfortunately, it also has the aitch bone which makes it a pain to slice. I prefer the shank for ease of slicing. Alton Brown feels the same way.

Daytona Beach Crepes - Need Help

The place I was thinking of is/was La Crepe on Ormand Beach. It's not in the phone book. Has it closed? (I could call but it's more fun to get Chow feedback!) Thanks.

Daytona Beach Crepes - Need Help

A few years ago while visiting, we had lunch at a really nice place that served wonderful crepes. All I can tell you is the it's on the second level of a little building with sort of an outside atrium. Access was up a flight of outside stairs. It was pretty upscale. We're back and would love to eat there again but, obviously, I haven't a clue as to the name. Can anyone please help us?

Alfoccino's @ Auburn Hills [DTW]

The seasoned waiters at the F.H. location never wrote anything down but I always received the
proper order (not so amazing since I always ordered the same thing. There was one waiter in particular I remember that no matter how many in our party and the complexity of the order, never wrote it down. He was amazing although he never smiled and rarely spoke. Rheta probably remembers him, a very dour individual.
Sadly, the last time we ate there, it was sub-par. I hope it was just a fluke.

One Eyed Betty's Ferndale (DTW)

Also reviewed favorably in the Free Press. The New Orleans style barbecued shrimp looked especially tasty!

Dessert for sort of Mardi Gras meal....please help me decide

A bread pudding with a bourbon sauce would be right in keeping with one of my favorite Commander's Palace desserts.
Bob

Would you care to share your favorite cornbread recipe?

All good recipes but it doesn't hurt to have a couple of boxes of Jiffy on hand. Never fails.
Bob

Seeking Tea Kettle

Same here except I use the old tried and true Corning 6 cup teapot we've had since our wedding (50 years), and a pyrex measuring cup. I can pretty well tell when it hits 180 from the shimmer and wafts of vapor. Simplify!
Bob

Can someone identify this mushroom?

This is absolutely NOT a morel. If you don't know what it is, don't eat it.

Fish fillet knife

I live in Michigan and have fileted a lot of Lake Michigan salmon. The large scimitar knives available at any good tackle shop are fine for the initial cleaning at the marina. For breaking down a fish purchased at Cosco, the Chicago Cutlery #78S works just fine. No need to spend big bucks for a utility knife that you won't be using every day.
Bob

Let's talk about Liverwurst.

And I have to stick with my reply; thick slices of Braunschweiger on white bread with Miracle Whip, not mayo. Some sliced onion makes it even better. As I mentioned in the above thread, I was lucky enough to be able to enjoy it fresh out of the smoke house at the old Wilson and Co. packing plant in Kansas City in the mid 60's. We sliced it off of 20# bungs that we were producing for an Army contract. They were still warm. Wow.

Alfoccino's in Farming Hills-Anyone been lately?(Detroit metro)

It's not what you would expect. Donna and I had driven to Fairview, KS. for the funeral of my sister-in-law. Most people find the northeast part of Kansas desolate; I think it's beautiful in it's own way. Anyway, the service was held in a small, very old little church (Fairview aint much) and after the service, we were all invited to the basement for lunch. All the locals had brought food, all farm home made. There was every type of casserole, salad, meats, you could ever imagine, You wouldn't believe what those women could do with beans! Fully half of the table was filled with cakes, pies, custards, etc.. We can brag about our Rattlesnake Clubs, Diamond Jim's, etc, but I'm tellin' you, that was the finest table ever set. I was in heaven.
Glad to be back. Hope I didn't disappoint with my story and thanks for the birthday greeting, Rheta.

Alfoccino's in Farming Hills-Anyone been lately?(Detroit metro)

Hi Rheta
I had exactly the same experience last year. The veal picatta had changed. There were no capers for one thing and, though I can't remember exactly what it was, it was different. I was disappointed. Even the pasta sauce didn't seem the same.
By the way, happy birthday a little late. If memory serves, it was the 28th. I was out of town (Fairview, Kansas) where I had the best meal of the year. I'll expound if anyone's interested.

Nose to Tail - every animal?

Same deal with oysters. We even eat the shells (Oscal and other calcium products)

Layer Cake Wine [Canton, MI]

Thanks to all. Found what I was looking for (cabernet) at Holiday Market. I realize that it's not "fine wine" but he likes it as a day to day kinda thing.
Happy holidays to all of you.

Purple punch recipe - ideas?

Hi Dave
My mother gave me what she says is the original recipe for the famous Purple Passion punch served in the 30's and 40's. (I was born in 1942, probably as a result of this stuff). I made and sold it to my fraternity brothers in the '60's. Absolutely 2 thumbs up (or 4, as the night went on). This is her exact wording:
2 extra large grapefruit juice
3 extra large pineapple juice
3 cans lemon juice
1 qt. Bar-X mix
3 qts. grape juice
1 #2 can orange juice
3 of either ginger ale, lime rickey, or white soda
3 pts. grain alcohol
25# ice
Add alcohol to taste (if memory serves, I added a little more, probably another pt. but taste first)
WARNING: This stuff goes down really easy and often results in pregnancy.

Layer Cake Wine [Canton, MI]

Hi Guys
I have my son-in-law for our secret Santa this year. He likes Layer Cake wine. I know absolutely nothing about wine. Can anyone recommend a good retail outlet here on the west side (I live in Canton) where I might pick some up?
Thanks,
Bob

Toaster Oven Recs

I am required to (sob) start a diet. Because I'll need to prepare single portions, I'm looking for a toaster oven in which I can bake such things a single filets of fish, etc. I'm looking for something that will maintain a reasonably even temp, won't get screeching hot on the outside and won't break the bank. Any recs?

Thank you,

Bob

New Buffalo, Michigan Restaurant

We never visit New Buffalo without dining at Pierre Anne Crepes. It's only open Fri., Sat., and Sunday in December and is closed January and February. Please check out the website and give it serious consideration. You won't regret it.

ham hock and bean soup

I agree with the refrigeration and skimming method. Better yet, just go down to Joey K's in NOLA on Wednesday and order their Lima Beans and Ham Hocks special with cornbread. It's pure heaven!

DTW - Colman's mustard?

Babe, I'm stunned! I can't live without my Colman's (no ham shall be served without it) and have had no problem finding it at Meijer's or Holiday Market in Canton. I'll do a recon tomorrow and report back.

Diamond Jim's News - Detroit

Hi Guys!
Donna and I celebrated our 50th at Diamond Jim's last Wednesday. We had tried to get in a week ago but they were slammed. No specials, I had the salmon; Donna, the whitefish. Both were excellent. Sharon treated us to a glass of champagne which was appreciated. Yes, it's tiny but I think, very charming. I love the sparkle of the whole place when pulling up to park. The best part was seeing two of the old regular servers, Karen and Pauleen. I missed Mary but plan on going back for lunch so I can get a better look around.
I don't understand the above reference to the age of the guests. I observed all ages, including children. Most of the folks at the bar were younger than I and all chins appeared tidy!
We left very happy. Sure I miss the old place but nothing's ever the same. Look at Joe Muer's! I'm just glad they're back and that Mary has Sharon to help man the helm.
