Tipping during happy hour

The point of my question,to some extent, was to make people think about it. I always tip on the non HH price. I'm mostly talking about food and drink places.
We have a place here in the great city of Des Moines that does half price pizza, beer and wine during HH. I had a gourmet pizza, and 2 pints of Stone IPA. The check was $13,00 and change. I would have never thought to tip based on that amount. But I guess some people do.

Tipping during happy hour

When you go to a place during happy hour, do you tip on the check amount,or what it would have been without happy hour prices? The wait staff doesn't work half as hard if prices are 50% off. They likely work harder. I've asked a few people, and the opinions vary. A lot of people say they tip on the check, but had never really thought about it.
What do you do?

What to eat at the Des Moines Saturday farmers market

Oh, and there was a popular place at the farmers market, that has since opened a place across the river.

Can't speak much to the farmers market. I know there is a place that does breakfast burritos that people rave about, but of the 30,000 people or so at the market, about ten percent will be in that line. Wil you have a car? If so, you have to go to Nicks on Army Post Rd for a tenderloin.
Nicks is about a 5-10 minute drive from Downtown.

Corned Beef hash...from a can. Preferred brands?

I just saw Keystone brand Homestyle Corned Beef Hash at Walmart. All I can find about it is that it is from a family owned company that's been around for 40 years or so. Comes in a big can. Anyone ever tried it?

Best of Central Iowa

This isn't exactly keeping on topic, but since there seems to be some people around Des Moines here, I thought I'd share.
Graziano's Market sells the best damn frozen pizza crust I've ever had. If you like ultra thin crust, try them. Less than a buck each. The lady at the cash register told me when they started selling them, they didn't move very fast. But as more people tried them sales took off. She said they sell more than 250 a week now. Quick, easy, and while you are there you can pick up Des Moines best Italian Sausage to top them with.

Best of Central Iowa

It has been years since I've had it. I would never had thought to order it. It was a company Christmas party buffet style. Big pan of fried chicken. I killed it.
When I reviewed Stroud's in Kansas City, I said it was the second best fried chicken I'd had. Behind Latin king.

Best of Central Iowa

Best Deli Sandwich- Mama Mia, Manhattan Deli on Ingersoll
Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin- Nicks, on Army Post.
Best Place For Beer (yes, beer is food) El Bait Shop, downtown Des Moines.
Best Fried Chicken- Latin King
Best I Need A Burger From A Drive Thru, B-Bops.
Best Authentic Taco- La Pena, Indianola Rd.

This post is Des Moines specific, geared toward people coming here not familiar with the area. It is also, of course, IMO. Feel free to debate. I might find something I didn't know about.

Corned Beef hash...from a can. Preferred brands?

Back in the late 70's early 80's, Des Moines got it's first warehouse store. I believe it was called Pace. They sold Stagg corned beef hash with green chilis. My God it wass good. When Sam's club came to town they bought and closed Pace. Hormel bought Stagg. It went away, and I've never found anything that compares. I know that doesn't help the OP, the thread just got me reminicsing.

Does the pork tenderloin sandwich really look like this?

If you would like to view a large selection of these, here is the most complete blog on Iowa tenderloins you will ever find.

Interesting. I've lived in Iowa my entire life, and have never heard a tenderloin refered to as a pork burger. Not saying it's not true, just find it interesting.

Desserts in Des Moines IA?

I'm not a dessert person, but since there is no Des Moines participation anymore, I'll give you this.

What's in a chicken nugget?

I had a freind tell me that Mcnuggets were made from chicken buttholes. He arrived at this because he had eatin every part of a chicken but the butthole, and they didn't taste like any part he'd eatin before.
I'm on board with this.

Anyone shopped Big Lots for grocery items?

Went there all the time for Rudy's hot and spicy pork rinds. .75 a bag. Got to the point where I just had to quit. I'd kill a bag a night. It was like heroin withdrawal(from what I've read ;-)).
Can't go in anymore. Have to resist my dealer.

Kansas City BBQ & Other Restaurant Recommendations

Used to hit KC a couple times a year. My first stop after leaving my driveway in Des Moines was LC's. Burnt ends. Best bbq I've ever had. Not a fan of sauce, so I order it on the side. I recommend doing that.
Should note it has been a few years since I've been.

Famous Dave's Burnt Ends

What's up, CHM?
I don't play here as much as I used to. Not much traffic anymore.
Burnt Ends are in about a half dozen places in Des Moines now. Nothing close to LC's at their best.
Never eaten at Famous Dave's. I was wondering if this would make it worth trying. You are likely right. I'll pass and drive South sometime this Summer.

The new chain in town. Cheddar's. Info please.

Had one in Des Moines for years. Went out of business a few years back. I remember really liking the Cajun Chicken strips. Ordered with extra cajun seasoning. Off the appetizer menu you got a lot pretty cheap.
Keep in mind the last time I was there was at least 15 years ago.

Seen the commercials a few time. Burnt Ends will likely be new to people in a lot of the FD locations. I wonder how authentic they will be.
Anyone tried them yet?

How do you like your Onion Rings?

When the Vidalia's show up here. I like to batter them with a cheap batter mix (Don's Cajun), but instead of using a cup of water to mix, I use a half cup of beer, and a half cup of Louisiana Brand hot sauce. The sweet onion with the spicy batter is fantastic.
Oh, if you decide to do this, don't salt them before you try them.

Your best items at Sam's Club

Sadler's Smoked sliced brisket is worth the membership cost.
There have been a dozen or so BBQ places open where I live in the last few years. None can match the Sadler's brisket from Sam's. Costco has a much smaller version, while great, it's not quite as good as the big one at Sam's.
Also, just recently had the smoked pork loin. Agree that it is awesome as well.

Costco Food Finds- 1st quarter 2013

Look at them closely. I've had prime strips that weren't worth a damn. It was my fault, they didn't look well marbled, but they were the only prime strips left, so I took a chance.
If they look good, they usually are good. I find that they need a couple days in the fridge before cooking. They are so fresh they haven't figured out they are dead yet.

Budweiser Black Crown

Tried a sample. Found it to be totally unoffensive. I was surprised. First thought was what are they gonna do if bud drinkers start looking for taste?
On the other hand, it was 10:30 AM and I was a bit hungover.

When a 'poster' goes off the rails..

The "Guinea Grinder" was a sandwich I grew up with in Des Moines. Big Italian population, many Italian sandwich shops. They all made them.
Just a loose meat sandwich using Italian sausage and a little sauce and cheese on a bun.
The term died out only a couple years ago. I've read post on Chowhound from people visiting that were appalled by this.
We're a little more laid back. The older folks still forget it's now just a grinder, the people at places like GRAZIANOS, just smile when they hear it.
