Old Posts, CH'ers who are no longer with us

Sadness is part of life. I agree with you that seeing the post of recently deceased people I admired here is sad, but after some time passes, and I come across some of those old post, it makes me happy to remember them, and the knowledge and humor they were so kind to share with us.

Can we find out when we started here?

I'd been posting here for a long time when I got a message to change my posting name, as the site was getting large enough that "bobr" was going to get lost, or something to that effect. I don't know if that reset my member number or not. I think I started in 1998.

Is Chowhound dead?

I miss the comprehensive reviews. Used to read them about anyplace from anywhere. Felt like I had eaten at a million places i would never be able to go. Reviews are few and far between now. Or maybe I just need to click and scroll a lot more. Not sure I'm ever gonna do that. Maybe a Reviews board would be good. Probably not. I don't know, it's just so regional anymore. Hard to satisfy my "what's the world like outside of where I live" fascination. Glad I don't have to run this place.

Is Chowhound dead?

No, you don't. And I miss that.
On the other hand, I don't either.

Old dog.....new trick?

Preheat cast iron skillet on high heat for 10 minutes. Room temp steak seasoned with salt and pepper. 1 inch thick I do for 2.5 minutes a side. Remove and plate. let rest for 5 minutes. Perfect.

Diners Drive-ins and Dives

Guy was in Des Moines a month or so ago. He did an episode from an old drive in that I've known for decades. It showed the owner slicing and pounding out pork to make pork tenderloin sandwiches. Reality is that they haven't done that for years. They use frozen Sysco loins. Oh, and you won't see car hops on roller skates either. Disappointed that they staged it.

Let's bring back Jim Leff as a Senior Consultant for Chowhound

It has to be run by someone that understands it. That clearly isn't happening. Jim created it, and is likely the only one who can save it. If I was him I would let it die, and recreate it elsewhere.

Vom Fass Recommendations?

haven't tried that many of their products, but I love the beer malt vinegar. Fantastic on fish, or just a sip out of the bottle.

Who is the best Iron chef ever?

Batali had my favorite line. I don't remember the secret ingredient, but his advice with it was, and this is probably not verbatim, When faced with an unfamiliar ingredient, batter and deep fry it.

If You Could Only Drink One Beer Forever...

It would have to be something fantastic. Not something I would want everyday, but I'll fill in with Gin and Tonics.
That said, Goose Island Lolita. Maybe.

Your most delicious and uncanny ways to eat Spam?

I go with 8 slices to a can. fried golden in the skillet, 4 to a sandwich, which is white bread with a hefty smear of Hellmans.
I have some new ideas, thanks to this thread.
Slightly off topic, have you tried the "new" flavors? I tried the Teriyaki. It was a sin and the person that developed it should be in spam jail. One bite, them into the trash. My dog wouldn't eat it.
Black pepper version was ok. I have a Jalepeno in the cupboard. I look at it and think, Why?

Not many gripes about Costco . Is it worth it for one ?

If you take Glucosamin with Chondroitin, Consumer Reports test showed Kirkland Sig brand as the highest quality. They say the savings on that product alone pays for a membership. My membership is paid for by the dog food. I also buy the Prime beef. I would belong for that alone. The gas at the Des Moines Ia area Costco is .03 to .05 cents a gallon cheaper. Not enough to make the drive for. I'm curious as to how much cheaper it is elsewhere. There are enough things I buy that I can't get elsewhere, that in my case it is worth it for one.

Costco Strategy For Ist Experience

As was already mentioned in this thread, but is always good for new customers to know, prices ending in .97 are closeout prices. The item has not been reordered, has been reduced, and can continue to drop in price depending on how fast it goes. Price tags with an asterisk in the upper right hand corner are not being reordered, so if it something you like, buy a lot of it (hello tasso double stuffed olives). Prices ending in .00 are usually displays, one left items and are deeply discounted. Those items can also be negotiated with the manager.

Anything worth trying from Walmart in store Deli and/or bakery?

Ok, I'll admit to occasionally grabing one of the Italian Sub sandwiches. They have a Subway located in the Walmart I go to, and the store made subs are much better. Not a ringing endorsement on its own, but they really are pretty good compared to the sub chains. Huge, respectable amount of meat. Throw away the wilted lettuce and crappy tomatoes, and it's worth the money. Back when I cared about my diet i used to buy the sliced cajun fried turkey from the deli counter. It was pretty damn tasty.

Regular, sliced 1/4 inch, just fried in the cast iron until golden brown. White bread, thin slice of cheddar, light smear of mayo.

LA Hound visiting KC for football and bbq

Just a warning on LC's Burnt ends. If you get them at their best, and on rare occasions they do miss, they will be the standard that you measure all future BBQ against. All will fail. At their best, they are that good. I would also order the sauce on the side.

Tipping during happy hour

The point of my question,to some extent, was to make people think about it. I always tip on the non HH price. I'm mostly talking about food and drink places.
We have a place here in the great city of Des Moines that does half price pizza, beer and wine during HH. I had a gourmet pizza, and 2 pints of Stone IPA. The check was $13,00 and change. I would have never thought to tip based on that amount. But I guess some people do.

Tipping during happy hour

When you go to a place during happy hour, do you tip on the check amount,or what it would have been without happy hour prices? The wait staff doesn't work half as hard if prices are 50% off. They likely work harder. I've asked a few people, and the opinions vary. A lot of people say they tip on the check, but had never really thought about it.
What do you do?

What to eat at the Des Moines Saturday farmers market

Oh, and there was a popular place at the farmers market, that has since opened a place across the river.

What to eat at the Des Moines Saturday farmers market

Can't speak much to the farmers market. I know there is a place that does breakfast burritos that people rave about, but of the 30,000 people or so at the market, about ten percent will be in that line. Wil you have a car? If so, you have to go to Nicks on Army Post Rd for a tenderloin.
Nicks is about a 5-10 minute drive from Downtown.

Corned Beef hash...from a can. Preferred brands?

I just saw Keystone brand Homestyle Corned Beef Hash at Walmart. All I can find about it is that it is from a family owned company that's been around for 40 years or so. Comes in a big can. Anyone ever tried it?

Best of Central Iowa

This isn't exactly keeping on topic, but since there seems to be some people around Des Moines here, I thought I'd share.
Graziano's Market sells the best damn frozen pizza crust I've ever had. If you like ultra thin crust, try them. Less than a buck each. The lady at the cash register told me when they started selling them, they didn't move very fast. But as more people tried them sales took off. She said they sell more than 250 a week now. Quick, easy, and while you are there you can pick up Des Moines best Italian Sausage to top them with.

Best of Central Iowa

It has been years since I've had it. I would never had thought to order it. It was a company Christmas party buffet style. Big pan of fried chicken. I killed it.
When I reviewed Stroud's in Kansas City, I said it was the second best fried chicken I'd had. Behind Latin king.
