Garbage disposal uses

Filling up landfills is not a concern. A ten square mile piece of desert could contain all of Americas waste over the next 100 years. It is also more regulated than farm land.
The fear that was instilled in the 90's lives on.

Garbage disposal uses

Me too. Not much fall in the drainline. After numerous plumber visits, I've quit using it entirely.

Des Moines Recommendations?

Sorry you didn't get out more, but many thanks for the reply.

Des Moines Recommendations?

I don't know. Are tater tots with jalapenos wrapped in bacon pretty common?
Unique to Des Moines, as I mentioned, Graziano's Italian sausage is Des Moines. Many places serve a version, but the best are normally found at dive bars. The breaded pork tenderloin sandwich is also not common outside of Iowa, Indiana, and a few close neighbors
There is a dive bar ,Kelly's little Nipper, on East 17th and Grand, just East of downtown that used to serve a good version of both these sandwiches. They changed owners a year or so ago, and I have not been since. They claimed that would not change things, so it may be what you are looking for. I would go for lunch, as the evening crowd used to be a little, uhh, well, I would go for lunch.
Pretty unique to Des Moines is steak de burgo. I would recommend Sam and Gabes, or Chefs Kitchen. A little more upscale, but still casual. There are many variations of this dish, and you will see it on the menu at most good places that serve steak. It is basically a beef tenderloin in a garlic butter reduction. Some do olive oil and Italian seasoning, etc.
As for the Maid Rite, enjoy. I'll be interested in your take on it. I'm gonna guess
underwhelmed.

Des Moines Recommendations?

Ahh yes, the farmers market. I need to remember that in post regarding Des Moines.
Saturday morning from around 7:00 AM until 12:00 PM, around 20 to 40 thousand people will fill the Court Ave and surrounding area for the farmers market. If you aren't into farmers markets, or enormous crowds, avoid the area until late afternoon. The crowds tend to linger for hours at all the places in the area, High life being one of many.
It is a great event, and fantastic for the city and local establishments, but not something you want to run into expecting a quiet lunch.

Des Moines Recommendations?

Can't imagine what you couldn't get in a big city, but this is pretty unique.

I should note that they are connected to the best beer bar in the Midwest. You can get your beer there, and take it over to the High Life.
Also, Grazianos Italian sausage is legendary in Iowa. They have to ship it to customers in every state.

VERY Annoyed by Flash Targeted Ads -- PLEASE GET RID OF THEM

Still there, Dave. Can you Investigate faster??

Does anyone make a Chili Onion Ring dish?

Reverse the order. I'm starting to give this too much thought with a weekend ahead,

VERY Annoyed by Flash Targeted Ads -- PLEASE GET RID OF THEM

The flashing lottery ad is hugely annoying. Never bitched about the ads before, but this is out of place here.

Does anyone make a Chili Onion Ring dish?

Sounds like it may be your calling.

Dinner in Des Moines

I'd go with Baru 66 .

Do you recall your first Chowhound post?

I think my first post was in 1998 or so. Don't remember it, but I don't really remember my last post either.
Jeff ran things, but I don't think it was ever not moderated. The few mods there were couldn't keep up.

COSTCO Pricing

Ending in .97 means closeout item. The price keeps falling the longer the last of the stock remains.
an * means that what you see is all that's left of that item, and it isn't on reorder.

Domino's New Pizza

Yes, the crust will make all the toppings better. The crust is so............crust.

Iowa - Regional Food ideas anyone???

Steak De Burgo is rarely seen outside of the state. If it is, it was brought by someone from here.
There are many variations, but the basic is a beef tenderloin covered in a garlic butter sauce.
I believe the original, from Johnny and Kay's, also used cream in the sauce.
Try google. It is the only thing that was started here, and remains here, that I know of.

Indianapolis - what do you recommend?

Re-post on the Great Lakes board. That would be the correct board for your question.

Costco butchers

Let it come to room temp. Lightly salted. Toss in a preheated cast Iron for 2 minutes a side, finish in 350 degree oven for 4 minutes, perfect medium rare, Tough as leather.

Des Moines trip report

Lived in Des Moines all my life. When my son comes home from Colorado he walks in with a bag of Tasty Tacos. I still don't get it. I'll take a couple from La Pena please.

Costco butchers

Despite the other replies, I have had the same experience. Last weekend I found what I originally said I wanted. 2 ribeyes, 16 oz ea.
They looked great. Well marbled, nice fat cap.
Inedible. Tough, gristle, total failure. Went right to the dog.
Had that happen once before with the Prime ribeye.
That's twice out of probably 20 times. I can honestly say I've had my best steaks from Costco, and my worst steaks from costco

Costco butchers

Yeah, I'll give that a try next time I'm out there. Just thought I'd check to see if it had been done before.

Costco butchers

Just wondering if anyone has ever requested a smaller steak at Costco. With the price of beef I would love to be able to grab a couple 12-16 oz ribeyes, instead of the packages of ribeye roast looking monsters. I see the butchers back there behind the seeming bullet/soundproof glass. I know it isn't a Costco thing to do smaller size stuff, just wondering if anyone has ever thought to ask.

Trader Joe's Ginger and the FDA

Yes I posted bad information. But it was what they told me.
The first of December, and again In January, they then told me at the local store the ban had never been lifted.
My opinion of Trader Joe's, They have terrible customer service, and it starts with corporate having no clue what's going on. Communication is pretty easy these days. Why aren't you all on the same page?

Barbara's Bake Shoppe Iowa City, IA, mid-1970s

Barbara's in Des Moines was known for the champagne cake.
Try asking them. Here is a link, maybe they know.

Crispy Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches

Love it. Reminds me of the old site.

Crispy Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches

While WRONG never appeared in my post, it is a regional thing I guess. In all the years of posting about tenderloins here, I never heard that was the standard in Indiana. Normally we just argue about where it was started.

Crispy Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches

When you add lettuce, tomato, and mayo(?), it requires a new name.
A pork tenderloin has condiments on it, not various fruits and vegetables.

Best IPA

Surly Furious is not a double. Abrasive is. Agree with your comments on both.
Green Flash is a brewery, I assume you mean the West Coast IPA, also not a double.
If you haven't checked out Beeradvocate.com, I suggest you do. Seems like something you would enjoy.
