Searching for a great croissant - my report

I also suggest Cannelle bakery in Jackson Heights, Queens on your next visit. Excellent croissants and I just came back from spending 2 weeks in Paris and still find Cannelle's quite good. I totally agree with your comment on Balthazar croissants, they are not good.

Testaccio (Long Island City)

I've eaten there twice in the last month. i really like the bucatini all’amatriciana , very smoky, perfectly al dente. Also loved the artichokes and the oxtail terrine appetizer as well. I liked the diavola pizza, very tasty . Surprisingly good desserts as well, a deconstructed tiramisu and chocolate/coffee flan were good as well. They need better/fresher bread. Foccaia on second visit was stale. Oh and they have a problem with making iced tea, sigh.

penn station area

We like Biricchino, at 29th street near 8th avenue. Norhtern italian, they recently renovated. the food is good, especially the sausages and cured meats. They started out as butcher which is still next door. the pastas are good too.

I think they are closed on Sundays though.

Hunan House....still good

Funny about the warmth of the dishes, can't figure that out. The night we went, a huge party came in filling up the entire place, hopefully business will pick up.

Hunan House....still good

Just had a really good dinner at Hunan House on Northern.

Cold pickled cabbage, cucumbers with scallion sauce, lamb with cumin, dan dan noodles, smoky pork with leek, and a knock out dish of green sauteed hot peppers with black beans.

My only gripe was that with the exception of the peppers the other hot food was just not (temperature) hot enough.

The smoky pork was interesting, kind of like a hard rind bacon sauteed with leeks.

Again...Galatoire's versus Commanders Palace...

The atmosphere was great, we sat downstairs. We had a very nice waiter, good Bloody Mary's. My shrimp remoulade, the shrimp were mushy. My friend had the turtle soup which was okay. I had the lamb chops with mushroom/bordelaise sauce. They were cooked a bit more well done than ordered and I wasn't wowed by them, something I could do at home. My friend had the shrimp creole, again mushy shrimp and bland sauce. The souffle potatoes were cold and greasy. The waiter knew we were unhappy and brought a cup custard on the house, but it was very dense. Maybe it was us, other folks seemed to be having a grand time.

What to order: Cochon Domenica Dante's Kitchen Commander's Palace Mr. B's

Just got back from NO. Spot on with Mr B's, we had the gumbo yaya and the BBQ shrimp, wear the bib! Excellent apple/blackberry crisp and pecan pie as well.
At Cochon, we had the ribs with pickled watermelon, boudin balls and brisket with horseradish potato salad. We also had a side of grits. dessert was the pineapple upside down cake. Everything was wonderful, including the homemade rolls.

Back from NO and wanted to thank everyone who responded.
We had great meals at Mr B's, August, Cochon, Emerils and the best ever duck at Brigtsens. Beignets every morning for breakfast. So so brunch at Antoines and unfortunately Galatoires was a bust for us. Never made it to CP, but I'll be back cause I loved NO!

Again...Galatoire's versus Commanders Palace...

So it looks like Galatoire's has won the spot, my friend really wants the atmosphere, we'll try and order carefully. Also will go to Central Grocery, Mr B's,Parkway, Cochon and either Dookie Chase or Willie Mae's (yup, fried chicken) for lunches. Phew, anyone ever see the movie La Grande Bouffe?

Summer '09 Restaurant Week - plans, reviews

Bar Boulud, Pate grand mere was excellent, ravioli with shortribs, good too. Desserts were both good, the macaron with coffee ice cream and the pralin rouge with a lemon curd and fraises de bois!

Summer '09 Restaurant Week - plans, reviews

Love GT, fabulous service. 5 choices of bread, including a wonderful green olive roll. Free refills of iced tea(you'd be surprised how many places charge per tea).
We had the summer bean salad with gooseberry vinaigrette and the lamb papardelle with olives/lemon confit, very tasty. Next up was a very well prepared chicken with spring vegetables, but the star of the show was the pork croquette over a potato puree, it was amazing, crunchy crust with pieces of shredded pork.
The desserts as usual were amazing, I took your suggestion and had the chocolate bread pudding and the peach/blueberry streusel tart.

Going to bar Boulud tomorrow, last year it was good, small menu.

Visiting NYC from Chicago during Restaurant Week - Any Suggestions?

If you can get a reservation at Convivio, really wonderful

Where to find supplies for cake decorating?

In Jackson Heights, on Junction Blvd between 34th and 35th avenue is Pattycakes. They have lots of equipment and ingredients. they also have classes.

Where can you buy Haagen Daz Fleur De Sel?

In Queens, Jackson Heights Met foods on 37th avenue/77 street had it last week.

Ruby et Violette

I bought cookies here today with high hopes. What a terrible disappointment. The cookies were $2.50 each, it was hard to tell them apart. I got a dulce de leche, honey pecan and butterscotch. There was an odd aftertaste as well and honestly I can make better ones at home.

Onion Rings in Sunnyside / Woodside / JH?

Jackson Hole on Astoria blvd.has good onion rings. Whole onions, crispy coating(not beer batter though), and you can get them with melted cheddar. You can get a side of ranch for dipping.

Also they have good homemade pickles!

Where to buy quality salt?

I love Maldon salt, you can find it at Dean and Deluca, Williams Sonoma and Sur la Table all in Manhattan. Also Kalustyans has a good selection. (Lexington + 28 street)

best cake in NYC?

Cupcake cafe on ninth ave. has a really good maple walnut cake, and beautiful flower decorations.

When's Himalayan Yak coming back?

Drove by the last 2 days, still closed.
