Oakland Barb's Profile

Chicken Pot Pie/ Berkeley or Oakland Area

Chow in Lafayette makes either fresh chicken or turkey pot pie. They're really good!.
I had to stop purchasing them when they added mushrooms (allergy).
It's been very disapppointing!

Our dinner at Son of a Gun

We ate here for the second time last week and loved the food- again.

BUT tthe noise was just too, too much.
I'm kind of surprised not to hear anyone else menion this.
It's not like we're not used to this issue in the Bay Area, but this is beyond anything.
Very, very unpleasant at the communal table at 8 PM on a Thursday night.

We even enquired about take-out thinking that might be the wy to go next time!

Out of Town Potluck

I hear there's a little panic about the outdoor venue (the alternative has a "cafeteria" vibe).
All fingers crossed for good weather next weekend!

Out of Town Potluck

My son has already asked if he can bring an old friend along who's also arriving on Thursday for the wedding. We've known her since he was in high school so this should be fun!
The menu looks looks fantastic and has enough variety to please everyone.

Out of Town Potluck

LOL
Everyone's from out of town!
Tough one for a potluck, although I completely understand where you're coming from.

This is a "less expensive" wedding.
The couple are covering the cost of everything themselves and doing all the work, with the exception of the wedding dinner.
This is their way of getting 125 people (or so) together the night before the wedding.

Someone has to bring more than Safeway cookies and I'm volunteering!

Out of Town Potluck

Venue is a "camp" in Grafton.

Turns out the grooms cousin and uncle have decided to bbq (for 150?!) .

Sevan and Arax seem like a good way to go after the farmers market.

And we have reservations at Island Creek Oyster Bar for Thursday night.
Neptune sounds amazing but the wait isn't OK this time around.

Out of Town Potluck

This does bring to mind the question of where we should eat on Thursday night.
Prefer walking distance.
My son is coming into the City to join us and it would be nice to have something not so widely available in the SF Bay Area, but more typically New England.
I love a good lobster roll!

Out of Town Potluck

Wonderful ideas!

Thanks so much everyone.

I'll post back after the event.

We get so little that's really good that's Middle Eastern in the Bay Area, imo.

I'm excited about adding to the party in a chow-worthy way!

Out of Town Potluck

Thanks so much!

And I'm sorry to have been vague about the timing.
We arrive Thursday night, potluck Friday night, wedding Saturday late afternoon.

The Farmer's Market Sounds like a great idea! As I understand it the Four Seasons (where we stay Thursday night) is close to Copley Square.

Any other thoughts as to who is a good purveror at the market is appreicated.

And we'll pick up a cheap and cheerful cooler.

Out of Town Potluck

I have no idea how many people will be attending the potluck but there are 150 expected at the wedding and all are invited!

Needless to say, I'm not feeding everyone.
My thought is that I'd bring an average "potluck" amount i.e. serving 15- 20 people. Does that seem about right?

We'll be flying in from California so don't have a cooler. I hesitate to ask anyone else local as they'll be knee deep in preperations. This is a very "hands on" affair (the wedding and before and after events).

My son cooked his way thru college in a very upscale restaurant and has been blogging his way across the country.

http://athike2011.wordpress.com/

He's a true chowhound in his own right, albeit a very poor one.
BBQ is his specialty.

Out of Town Potluck

We are coming into Boston (the night prior) and then on to the Auburn area for a wedding in 2 weeks.

The (Friday) night before the wedding there's a potluck. The vast majority of us are coming from out of town so I know there will be a lot of deli food.
My son is best man at this wedding so the groom is quite dear to me. I'd like to contribute something special to this potluck, but obviously won't be able to cook it myself.

Any ideas for something really tasty, that will travel (i.e. from Boston to Auburn) and can be served at room temperature.

Rome Restaurants were left to me – Now What?

I intend to write a report on our eating all over Italy when I'm a little less jet lagged.

We ate at none of the fore mentioned restaurants.
After all our very careful consideration we were rather disappointed with the quality of the food we ate in Rome.
There was no one restaurant that stood out as "good" and one that was appalling.

I do greatly appreciate all the help offered on this board, however!
I'm happy to elaborate at a more lucid time.

Bakesale Betty's (Uptown) WTF?

Are you talking about the Telegraph and 51st ST shop?!

Rome Restaurants were left to me – Now What?

Thankd so very much to all who took the time to reply.
We leave in the morning!
I think we're both overwhelmed with much left to do for work at this point so a lot of the extra browsing will be done enroute.
I will file a report after we return.
And try to do justice to all this!

What to do with 4 cans of evaporated milk?

Like "good-" said, mac and cheese.

Rome Restaurants were left to me – Now What?

We'd be very much open to other thoughts!

And if it's useful, we'll be staying at the St. Regis.

This list was determined in a rather hit or miss fashion, oftern because a particular dish cuahgt someone's eye.
Feel free to make alternate suggestions.
They're much appreicated/

Rome Restaurants were left to me – Now What?

Thank you!
I had no idea.
What other dishes are served at a pizza restuarant in Rome, if any?

Rome Restaurants were left to me – Now What?

Thanks so much for helping us plan our eating in Rome.
It’s seemed quite daunting.
I’ve been in charge of the other 2+ weeks in Italy so I thought I’d let my husband try this for a change.

And yes, Elizabeth.
We have “the” app!

It’s been fun to browse the restaurants and photos.
We’ll look for the update.
I’m amused at the distance to the restaurants from our home.

After a little further research and we added L’Asino d’Oro and Le Colline Emiliane to the line up.
And now, Al Ceppo is there as well.

Pizza- it seemed to be a great lunch option?

So the line up, at the moment, is as follows-

Sunday night- La Campana
Monday night- Perilli
Tuesday night- L’Asino d’Oro
Wednesday night- Le Colline Emiliane
Thursday night- Al Ceppo

A question about dining times.
If we eat dinner at 8 PM is this early in Rome? Sunday night?
Typically, if we vacation in NYC we make 9 PM reservations but I’m a little worried about jet lag the first few days.
We don’t eat early meals at home but all bets are off if I can’t see straight.

What in Rome is Similar to Al Pompiere in Verona

First and foremost, I thought the food was fantastic! From the charcuterie cut to order to the amazing pasta, everything was spot on.
We had both to these things in many other restaurants but in no other place did we find them to be as good.
And I really enjoyed the "style", for lack of a better word. There was little pretention. The meal and service, though both excellent, were straight forward.
Prices were more than reasonable for the meal.
It should be noted that we ate here in 2006 so this was not a recent meal.

My hope was that someone might be familiar with the restaurant and know somewhere of a similar quality and feeling in Rome.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

What in Rome is Similar to Al Pompiere in Verona

I bought the amazing EatRome app for my iPad and I've been feeling pretty cocky.

This, and reading a large number of posts has led me to beleive that reservations in less formal restaruants aren't necessary weeks in advance (I sure hope I'm not wrong!).

But the one thing I would love to find in Rome is a restaurant that's similar in style and food to Al Pompiere, so far my hands down favorite restaurant in my many trips to Italy.
Is this something that I might find?

We'll be staying at the St. Regis, although traveling for food has never been an issue!

PUGLIA AND MATERA: A Report

Thanks so much for all your help.

From reading your alter-ego on Tripadvisor, it appears that you revisited the Masseria Torre Maizza (hope it doesn't feel like I'm stalking you. Just checking current recommendations as we have 4 nights of our trip committed there).

Will you be reviewing their restaurant?

PUGLIA AND MATERA: A Report

Thanks so very much for your excellent and detailed reports, thus far, Erica.
Where would you have your dinners in Matera if you were to do it again?

PUGLIA AND MATERA: A Report

Thanks so much for all this wonderful information!
I'm anxiously awaiting Matera, but I have a feeling that was at the end of this trip.

The restraurant visits until now have me wondering how far afield I might be able to travel.

Seeking recommendations in Matera, as well as near Andria

Erica-
We're visiting this part of Italy next month so I'm anxious to read your recommendations.
Unfortunately our visiting days for Matera are a Monday and Tuesday. I hope this doesn't affect our options for dining to too great a degree.

Chez Panisse Cafe disappointment

I must admit, it threw me to see this very old thread of mine resurface.
I don't see the point of bring a thread of this age to the fore.
That said, I haven't returned to Chez Panisse Cafe since my inital thread in 2003.

Restaurant with Rooms in Umbria

Thanks for the suggestions.
We have no routing, as of yet.
It could depend on the appeal of the meal (so to speak).

Restaurant with Rooms in Umbria

Looking for a wonderful place to stop enroute from Puglia to the Lucca area.
Food is of primary importance (of course).
We would also like to sleep off that wonderful, wonderful meal in great comfort.
This will be at the end of June, early July.
I greatly appreciate any ideas.

East Bay Brunches: A little more interesting than straight up diners?

Another Camino brunch fan, here. The food is great, as are the drinks.
It's just enough "different".

The Restaurant across from Andonicos on Telegraph in Berkeley- the (very) old IHOP

It appears to be open- agian.
Does anyone know what it is or the name? I couldn't quite catch it as I drove by this evening.
I think I remember seeing it was going to be MIddle Easterm.

Fee Brothers Bitters

The only place I've found that carries these bitters is way out in the Avenues.
I'm in Oakland.
Rather than mail order, does anyone know where they might be purchased in Oakland or closer to downtown SF?
If there's another wonderful brand of bitters you know of that you can suggest, I'd love to hear about that as well.
Thanks!
