high cholesterol
More fiber is right. I just received my degree in Nutrition, and lowered my own hereditary high cholesterol with a high fiber diet. The body secretes cholesterol-containing bile into the intestine for fat absorption. Lower in the intestine, the body reabsorbs this cholesterol. Increasing fiber ensures that less of this cholesterol is reabsorbed, and essentially is flushed down the drain and out of your body. Aiming for at least 30g a day in the form of whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables is best. Whether the condition is genetic or caused by diet, increasing fiber works. There is nothing wrong with supplementing with Metamucil or Benefiber as well. I often buy a double fiber bread, 6 g per slice. This is a great boost to the diet.
Kindle and Cookbooks
I love cookbooks on my kindle. I take that thing with me everywhere, so it is nice to be able to make an impromptu stop at the grocery store on my way home from work or school and have the recipe right with me. I've only bought a couple of cookbooks so far... a quick and easy vegan one called Appetite for Reduction since my husband just decided he is vegetarian. And then I have one of the Hungry Girl Cookbooks. It fits into my lifestyle when I need something fast fast fast and have run out of ideas. I plan on getting more, but honestly, the appetite for reduction book has given me a few yummy meals, so I am going to be cooking out of that one quite a bit.
Good middle eastern food in the OC
TeeHee. I was reading this and just by coincidence I am eating that okra stew as I type. I was craving it and had to pick some up on my way home (in the heights :-). They have it as a special but it seems to be there everytime I go by recently. Good stuff. I also really like their boureke (the spinach and feta in filo), and I agree, the hummous is good.
What causes hard to peel eggs?
I have no idea what age would be required for easy HB peeling, whether yours are considered new or old. It would be an interesting experiment to get eggs that are different ages and see which week starts the easy peeling. I just thought it was interesting that we could all be buying month old eggs at the grocery store. The first time I heard that in my food safety class at university it stuck in my memory. Also, the packing date could depend on the packer... usda says no more than 45 days at max to the sell by but the egg packer could technically put in something less than that. Another thing is that the USDA recommends we use the eggs within 3 to 5 weeks after we buy them, regardless of that date. So having two month old eggs in the fridge is probably considered definitely old. :-)
What causes hard to peel eggs?
Interestingly enough, the USDA rule is that the packing date of the eggs must be no more than 45 days before the sell by date on the egg carton. So even if that date on the eggs that you buy at the store is a week or two away, those eggs are likely at least a month old already.
Just an interesting fact. :-)
Getting desperate for 50's Chinese food!
Thank you so much for this post. I will definitely try Wong's. My family used to go to Tom Cod's too, my grandmother used to take us there for special occasions. I've been wondering what happened to that place, but could never remember if I was getting the name right, I was under ten years old the last time we went.
Silly Eating Habits
I eat my cereal soggy too. In the mornings crunchy cereal is too loud in my head, although I do that if I eat it for dinner on the rare occasion too. I really like corn chips and other crunchy things though, just not cereal.
Cookbooks with healthy AND delicious recipes?
Check out Food Cures by Joy Bauer. Not a traditional cookbook, but every recipe I've tried has been wonderful. The Ratatouille with Parmesan Couscous rated an excellent by my husband, Turkey meatballs, meatloaf and shepherd's pie were great too... I am a dietetic student so this is actually one of my favorite books. I loaned my copy of this book to my father in law (who is also a beef/pork three meals a day kind of guy) after his quadruple bypass, he ended up buying his own copy. Lots of info, menu suggestions for all meals, and better than that, excellent recipes... Although the recipes are split up into health chapters, just about all of the recipes are good for most issues (excepting diabetes or gluten allergies which need particular special consideration).
Smells like Fish
I've found that if I cook fish on the stovetop, the house always gets smelly. If I cook it en papillote in the oven, there's never any lingering smell. Since I'm the only one in my house that likes fish, that is now the only way cook it, since that yields the least complaints.
Bacon Vodka
Thought you all might find this interesting.
Haven't tried it myself... yet.
Have any of you tried it?

Boar's Head Products in the OC?

Not too far from you, this place is practically in La Habra but technically in Whittier. Definitely worth that trip.

Things you like slightly burned or burnt?
One of my favorite snacks is an english muffin, preferably, or a piece of bread with a slice of american cheese (not the slices wrapped in plastic kind) and placed under the broiler until it bubbles up and burns a nice lovely brown on top. I love my burnt cheese!!!
Carrot Greens, Hmmm?
In one of my vegetarian cookbooks (American Vegetarian Cookbook from the Fit for Life Kitchen by Marilyn Diamond), there is a recipe for tea made from carrot greens. Chop, boil for a couple minutes in water to cover, strain and pour into a glass with ice or drink hot. Haven't tried it though.
Best barbeque sauce out of a bottle?
Cattleman's is my fave too, but my hubby loves Sweet Baby Ray's.
Cattleman's is a bit sweeter.
Orchards Fresh Foods- Sausage, Sammy's and Shaved Ice, Whittier/La Habra
What and where is pflight? I've tried searching but came up empty handed...
Orchards Fresh Foods- Sausage, Sammy's and Shaved Ice, Whittier/La Habra
I recently bought a wonderful basil flavored sausage and realized there were no posts on Orchards Fresh Foods on Chowhound and thought it was my duty to mention it- based on all of the tips I've taken from this board in the past. Orchards Fresh Foods is a small gourmet market attached to a nursery in Whittier near the La Habra border. They have homemade sausage of many flavors, fresh seafood and they grind all of their own meats which includes Manning's beef and Shelton's chicken. The deli features Boars Head products and you can order sandwiches or salads to go or to eat there at one of the small tables inside or outside the store. Hawaiian Shaved Ice is also very good, especially in this darned heat. The produce is very good, offering organic when possible. They also have specialty groceries and specialty bottled sodas. A few visits back I found a great huckleberry soda- it wasn't there when I bought my basil sausage the other day. Hopefully they'll get it back in stock- I'll be heading back soon to stock up on more of that basil flavored sausage. Their website isn't completely up and running but the deli menu is on there...

Suggestions for Cookware purchase
I bought both the anodized from Costco and the stainless from Sam's. The anodized is great. Heats very evenly. The stainless from Sam's is fully clad tri ply all the way up the sides, not just on the bottom. Excellent value for the price. The Costco set came with a steamer insert while the Sam's set came with a pasta insert. They both fit in either pot. Really, excellent value for people who want both nonstick and fully clad stainless for $300.
Anaheim: festive restaurant for a b'day dinner?
Definitely Park Ave. Cool, rat pack atmosphere. Full Bar. Excellent food. They also have a back room where I have seen loud, boisterous groups be seated. :-) Been there quite a few times and haven't been dissapointed- brought my middle age inlaws there, they loved it.

Advice: Wisdom Tooth Extraction, what to eat?
A day or two after I had mine out, I had some cheese enchiladas from a local restaurant. Wonderfully savory, easy to swallow with minimal, if any, chewing since I cut it into itty bitty pieces. The best darn enchiladas I've ever had, and not because it was from a great place.
Celebrating tonight- N.OC, Rowland Heights, Whittier
Last week was my last final of the semester, today is my wedding anniversary, tomorrow I am graduating with an AA degree. Please help me find a great place to celebrate for dinner tonight. North orange county, rowland/hacienda heights, whittier area. Fairly inexpensive, up to $20 or $30 a person. Fun place, great chow. Anything goes... I'm just having a hard time thinking this morning. Thanks 'hounds!!
Great Salads in OC
At the fullerton location, my usual is the shrimp and avocado salad with curry dressing. Yum!
Tofu hamburger crumbles--any good recipes?
Whether it's the tofu crumbles or morningstar type hamburger crumbles, I have a great recipe that could use both. I take the crumbles and mix it with corn (I use supersweet frozen), a jar of salsa, sometimes brown rice, occasionally beans and cheese (I actually use quite a bit of cheese). You could stuff it in bell peppers, top with more cheese and bake or just eat it out of a bowl. My husband loves this stuff both ways.
LIttle India (along Pioneer) in Artesia
I don't know if Renu Nakorn is open yet. They closed some months ago for renovations.
I tried the Farmer's Cart organic delivery service
I use ParadiseO.com and am very happy with it. I've been using it for 5 months now, although I have to admit, if tierra miguel had a drop off near me I'd rather have that, mostly because it is locally grown. With paradise o, quality has been excellent and there is enough variety for me... I have to agree with the others about organic express. Not enough variety.

The Grocery Game, has any one tried it?
I was using it weekly for awhile when things were really tight- actually a few years ago now. I was paying about 25-40% for groceries- thats $25-40 for usually more than $100 worth of groceries. I shopped at a Ralphs here in So Cal (Kroger in the rest of the country) where they doubled coupons. That store near me closed and the other stores stopped doubling coupons so I haven't really used the site since. It was really great and I'd recommend using it if money is tight and you aren't too picky about the food you get. This saved our lives when my husband was laid off of work. The site is definitely worth the money to subscribe as long as you use it. They tell you what the great buys are without coupons like produce and meat as well as great buys with coupons. This was great for me and saves time in paying attention to the ads. They have a really easy and quick system. They also have an "in" to the unadvertised ads and include those in their list. I would regularly get free items, and Colgate toothpaste for 25 cents. Canned food was a regular item- chilis, veggies, fruit, beans, as well as salsas, shampoo's, frozen items, etc. I would stock up on things just because they were so cheap. Some weekends aren't so good for shopping but others are excellent so you just kind of have to wait it out. The stores put things on sale in cycles. It really saved me when my husband was on unemployment. Just my experience, and it helped to have a store nearby that doubled. I always felt great loading up my car with my bags and bags of $150 worth of stuff that I spent $50 on.
It's Q (Ikkyu) Ramen in Hacienda Heights - comparable to Daikokuya & SSG
Bummer, this place is closed. They now have a grand opening sign with the name of Katana Sushi... however on the signage it says sushi and ramen. Looks like they totally updated the decor from the outside, so it's likely not the same nice people. I really loved their curry. I attempted Curry House last week and it came nowhere close. This new place is on my list to try and I'll report back if it's memorable.
Overhead pot rack -- a good idea?
I recently saw a pot rack at Costco that included two lights on it... didn't see it available online.
