Dong Bei Mama update

Well, I will check into if they will make them if order ahead the next time I am there.

Dong Bei Mama update

I am sorry to have mislead you. There are eight or so cold dishes, but they now serve the normal ones now. Gone are the fancy ones. But the rest of the food was good I am not sure why but I think it was too much work for the kitchen. But I will see if they will make them if requested to do so

Dong Bei Mama update

Since our last chowdown there I have been back twice. The first time I ordered some new dishes as well one I have had before. I fear it been a few months ago and I can not find notes if I made any. But on Tuesday I met a couple of my family members planning a upcoming party I offer to take them to Dong Bei Mama since none had been there. The food was good but nothing stood and I will skip that

What is sad to say is the wonderful cold dishes ready made are no longer available Smoked Fish, layers of pork and vegetables gone.

I asked the server and she said it is gone forever.

A great lost. A big thanks Vlaing for taking us there last year.

Sam Wo's

Yes, in my youth we went to Chinatown every Sunday too. Now only when I have to meet family during Lunar New Years, attend street fairs and the worst thing possible paying one's last respects.

Food is not what it once was, but there are still places where I go just to think I still young.

Sam Wo's

agreed, many dumbwaiter are hidden from view but I can think of at least six in Chinatown that have dumbwaiters.

Where to buy plain steamed buns?

99Ranch should have some frozen ones. Or if you do not want to make them then buy the ready made and slice and split them into the size you want. Napolean has steam buns too.

Yum Cha Cafe May Be Coming to Bay Area

Returned a month after the soft opening. The food at the steam tables looked really good but still lack the great taste to match it looks. Did not try the BBQ items. All things considered I like shopping at the meat department for it cuts of meat. Give a dollar coupon for each 20 dollars spent. But will not make it a stop for it cooked items for now.

Anyone ever tried Stinky Tofu?

That really depends. If you can get pass the smell and like new things then it is yes. Otherwise pass. I for one loves it, but others can not stand the smell and taste. It is a something that needs a hearty soul.

La Lengua Chronicles - My Project for 2012

Welcome back it will be nice reading your trek for good food

I look forward to what you will be eat up now.

Great selection in the city.

I await your chowhounding

Yum Cha Cafe May Be Coming to Bay Area

Well stop by the new San Jose store day and the deli was open. It had a soft opening a few days ago and the staff was running around trying to get there act together so I did not have high hopes for the food during this period. It was decent but I think King Egg Roll has better stuff. Bu that may change. It is not a Yum Cha Cafe. It seems to SF production.

Will return later to check out the BBQ items.

Where to buy a wok in Berkeley or Oakland

If this is your first or second wok then I would go to the Wok Shop. Not only a great selection, good prices but help in getting the right one for you. If you know what you want then you can go to 99Ranch or Oakland Chinatown and see what they have. But if going over to the City in that big a deal then do so.

Yum Cha Cafe May Be Coming to Bay Area

Yes it did.

Yum Cha Cafe May Be Coming to Bay Area

San Jose has copy San Francisco and that store makes you use your own bags at checkout. So I think they will never add the San Jose to the shopping plastic bags since they can hand them out at that location. But it is on there website.

Yum Cha Cafe May Be Coming to Bay Area

Shun Fat recently open a store in San Jose a couple months ago. It has a unopened food section on the side. I will check it out the next time I in the area. As I remember it was a petty large area.

Clay Pot Rice and Double Boiled Soup at Best Taste in Oakland

Well, I finally made it with a few friends and was able to order a decent meal not just a plate rice or chow mein.

The soup was ginseng and chicken wonderful on a cold night. Rich and flavorful, worth the trip by itself.

Disappointing was the Mongolian Beef and the Eel Clay Pot Rice.

OK was the won ton soup

Garlic Stir Fry A Choy, Spare Rib Bitter Melon Clay Pot, Spicy Eggplant Clay Pot, BBQ Trio Roast PIg, BBQ Pork and Roast Duck, Preserved Meats Clay Pot Rice.

A place worth the trip for the Double Boiled Soup but the rest of the menu is hit and miss.

Custard Pie

I fear I do not. Had one from Red House a month ago and it was better than most still. But I think I may have to take up baking (not really).

Custard Pie

The Macau tarts has coconut milk instead of milk in the recipe I have seen in the past. But am not sure if others have milk.

Red house has a decent custard pie.

would it be nuts to go for dim sum this sunday?

You can but if you want to miss most of the crowd either go early (when they open which it the best) or go later (after 1 PM which is the poorer choice since they will run out of the best dishes). I think Sunday the selection will be better then Monday. But sometime the crowds are fun too.

City View and Louie's in San Francisco will not I think be that busy. Not sure about the East Bay. Dim sum is still not on list since I am still on a diet. Happy eating heidiepie.

Mooncake stamps?

Was at the Wok shop a couple of weeks ago and saw at least six types of molds. The old school molds are getting harder to find. The new ones I have seen work on compress air.

Chinatown food crawl

Well if you body can take another too much food day then return next weekend when the flower street fair is on. Extra food stands with some not normally available street food. Not always the best but always interesting.

Golden Dragon Rocklin

I think that you should read this link and ask the staff to try to offer you more dishes not on the special menu but are not listed but the chef can make if there is enough lead time.

I think the chef can do even more if given a chance to do so.

Soon's Tofu and Korean BBQ in Foster City

Thanks for the details. I have seen Soon's when shopping at 99Ranch but have not stop in as of yet. But will soon. I have been to Myung Dong TC and like the food.

Dim sum on carts in Vancouver proper?

I will let you know, yes I do not know about the move. See you soon.

Dim sum on carts in Vancouver proper?

Is the Neptune you are talking about in Richmond. If so they serve breakfast dim sum the last time I was in town. I miss BC and must return soon.

Clay Pot Rice and Double Boiled Soup at Best Taste in Oakland

Returned again for another wonderful lunch. So far only rice plates and the soup. But will be trying more dishes at a later date. But the soups are wonderful on a cold winters day, it is nice to have soup like this without doing all that work. Nice when someone else does the work.

Chinatown food crawl

Agreed, a day time crawl would be much better. Almost all the take places on Stockton Street close at 6 PM. Lots of walk and eat food there. San Francisco Chinatown closes up early now.

Does anyone know were to buy fresh beef tongue?

The key word is fresh. Many Chinese and Mexican market sell what can be frozen then defrosted tongues. Nothing is better then fresh. So before buying ask if fresh or not. Costco does not carry beef tongue at all locations.

Lunch at New Lun Ting ..... SF Chinatown

Well maybe I can add to the history of NLT. The Yee family has owned this landmark place since the 50's or early 60's. Before that the Mark family I believe opened Lun Ting before WWII.

Next the see someone from both families I will confirm this.

Lunch at New Lun Ting ..... SF Chinatown

The u shape counter when away in the early 70 so is so it maybe 40 years ago. Next time I go I will ask.

I think they serve fried chicken steak not my favorite a steak fried chicken style.

The only Chinese food I would order is the salted fish fried rice.

Lunch at New Lun Ting ..... SF Chinatown

Similar but not the same. Still go Chinese take on American pies.
