Anyone been to Ursa lately?

Had dinner here a couple weeks ago. It's still a great option for a healthy-ish splurge meal - beautiful, creative, delicious dishes, attentive service.

Valentine's Day 2014

My friends and I ordered a heart-shaped pizza from Pizza Pizza and washed it down with beer. It was perfect.

Didn't he have Jason taste things exactly for this reason?

He's pretty, but looks too douchey to be attractive to me.

Toronto solo dinner

I second Origin and Richmond Station. You could also go to any of the O&B restaurants.

Any thoughts on MasterChef Canada?

I was annoyed by the judge who criticized a contestant for cooking "only Asian," especially since she had made Indian, Chinese and Vietnamese dishes (and those are vastly different cuisines). Also, I just can't stand the mean judge - he's so fake and stilted.

Top Chef Season 12

I guess that's why they make such a point of showing off local foods and attractions - cities are essentially paying to star in a season-long tourism ad.

The Taste 1/22/14 spoilt

Just because some people don't take it seriously doesn't mean it's OK to dismiss others.

Embarrassed to ask about a Tim Horton's donut... but that pecan tortoise donut looks kinda good...

I have no idea - not a donut fan myself - but I figured that would be the most it could possibly cost.

The Taste 1/22/14 spoilt

I don't blame her, but I find it strange how vegetarianism/veganism is treated as an annoying whim on the show, as opposed to a valid moral stance. It's somehow acceptable to pressure her to eat meat, but it wouldn't be if she was abstaining for religious reasons.

That said, as a vegetarian, I would never sign up for one of these shows, precisely because I couldn't do well without compromising my values.

It's about a $2 investment. I say just go for it.

GTA south-west location for a book club discussion?

I haven't had their food in a couple years, sorry. But the coffee and drinks are definitely worthwhile. They make some great versions of hot toddies that would be perfect on a day like today.

The judges are SO awkward. They either sound super scripted or completely ill at ease. I feel like it's only going to get worse as the season goes on.

vegetarian ramen?

I don't think they can adjust each order individually. I was able to finish the broth - it was really tasty despite the salt - but I'll probably just make this an occasional treat.

vegetarian ramen?

I had the veg miso ramen too and was pretty impressed. But like you said, it's really salty. I drank a lot of water that night.

Ramen Isshin -- College/Bathurst

I went with a friend Friday around 10 and we practically had the place to ourselves.

Best Doughnuts in Toronto: 2013

There's one at Dovercourt and one around Manning.

Sure, but that's not the same as saying you want to see less local food in restaurants.

Holy Oak on Bloor near Lansdowne - it doesn't fit the theme, but it's a combination café/bar and stays open all afternoon. Plus they run their own book club so they're used to that kind of stuff.

Really? You want less support for Ontario farmers and responsible farming practices?

Agave y Aguacate lives on!

No, of course it's not easy. But it's better than overworking your staff til they burn out and/or hate their job -- which is what you seemed to say was the only option.

Agave y Aguacate lives on!

They can rotate shifts like every other business that stays open more than five days a week. There's no rule that says the same people have to work every day.

best salads, 2014 edition

I ate these in 2014 but they've been on the menu at Woodlot for a couple months - the grilled hen 'o the woods mushroom and wild rice salad, as well as the warm kale salad.

Top Chef NOLA - Ep. #13 - 01/08/14 (Spoilers)

Part of me wonders if that was a test - as in, she wanted to see if they would point out how stupid it was or just follow blindly. Or maybe she was trolling them.

Casual 30th Birthday Party

I haven't been since they winterized the space. I had a great meal, but I'm vegetarian, so I can't comment on the meat parts, which is what most people are interested in. But the sides were delicious and the kitchen offered to adapt other dishes so I could eat them (which I wouldn't ask at a BBQ place), so my experience was really positive.

I think the ambiance is lovely for a casual party - they have rustic, almost picnic-style tables, and like others mentioned, it's outdoors.

Top Chef: where are they now (ongoing)

Yeah, I gave it a couple tries and found it incredibly irritating. The sabotage aspect is what I dislike most about cooking competitions to begin with, so a show that encourages and emphasizes that is clearly not for me.

She's also been doing some judging on the less-than-stellar Cutthroat Kitchen.

Casual 30th Birthday Party

Haven't done a party there but I really liked Big Crow when I went last summer.

Otherwise, a friend of mine had her 30th dinner/party at the Westerly on Roncesvalles and it was lovely.

Breakfast/Brunch during the week?

The Steady on Bloor near Dufferin now does weekday brunch, apparently - I think Thursday through Sunday? http://thesteadycafe.com/#menu

So far I can only vouch for their tofu scramble & biscuit, but both make it worthwhile.

Their brunch is as good as their dinner. Portions are huge, too.
