Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - January 2014!! [OLD]

Sure did and it was wonderful!! I rarely cook, but this just tempted me and it was soooo good. The whole house smelled but was worth every bit of grease clean up and scent!! Cannot wait to try at local restaurant since they do so many dishes with it and no cleanup after!!

I will have to give them another try. I bought some, last week and thought they had a very fake vanilla flavor. I did them in a toaster oven if that makes any difference.

Yummy!! I also zap for a minute in micro, if we don't finish first day! They (So.Cal.) also now have an apricot/almond pastry round but it cannot compare!! In fact, it is so sweet, we tossed out.

Charleston, SC

Sorry I don't have an answer, but want to thank you for the info on places you have tried. I have asked for info on Charleston food-will be there in June- and got better info from you than replies to my question. Thanks again!

Best food in Charleston

Will be visiting U of Charleston area for week in June. Need ideas for bkfst, lunch, and dinner. Price not too concerning. Want grandaughter to see what is "out there" because, once she becomes a student in the fall, the budget will be tight. Ethnic and Area specialties are fine!

Pandor-Costa Mesa

This is a new Boulangerie/Cafe in Westcliff area. Don't bother!! It is a total disappointment. The displays look yummy but are almost too perfect looking. Tried both the St.Maxim and the almond croissant and the taste was the same, except the croissant a bit more moist. However, the only almond I experience was those sliced on top. Both weere absolutley flavorless and not a bit. appealing to the taste buds. Spoke to several other patrons, having salads and sandwiches and, they too, said a lot to be desired. Too bad, since location is great and the couple who opened it suposedly had spent a lot of time researching in France, and if I recall, they hired a French chef.
Doubt if they make it since they are directly across street from Haute Cakes, where we had wonderdful Breakfast sandwiches today and a Sprinkles is also in the are along with Plums and numerous really good food businesses.

NEW name of old Dennis Rodman restaurant on Coast Highway in Newport?

A huge white chicken posted out front and caught something on sign about bar-b-q. Supposedly opened by owner of 333 on Bayside Dr. Formerly called Josh Slocoms. Know anything about it or menu?

New on site: Chowhound dropdown!

This has to be the most stupid, annoying change ever! It takes twice as long to go on a site and the whole website has slowed to a crawl. I,for one, do not plan to go on site if this is a permanent change. It might work for very much higher level readers than I am, but it sure is not worth my time to struggle though the process. It really sucks!!

Where can I find a skin-on full fat pork butt?

If you have a Jons market in your area, give them a call. They carry a lot of Hispanic and other ethnic foods and I have purchased those skin on pork butts there, I don't know about the bone out but the butchers are usually very accomodating. My nearest is in HB but I know they have others in the valley and LA area.

Where is the "new" logo?

I have no indication of what post has already been read!! Bummer! A huge time waster! Seems every time things run smoothly someone decides to make bad changes and messes everyting up!!

LaBrea Bakery frozen take & Bake

Thanks for the info. I just got an e-mail from customer service at LaBrea saying they have discontinued the frozen products and they are now selling what you referred to as "take and bake" but they did not say where they could be found in the stores so you have solved that question for me. Does not sound like a "happy change" but will post when I give thm a try. I loaded up on the frozen ones I was able to find so it will be a while.

LaBrea Bakery frozen take & Bake

I found them! They are available at one of the Ralph's in Huntington Beach in a very upscale area of the city. Wonder if LaBrea is being choosy as to where they distribute them since they do do have them at other Ralph's I have called..

LaBrea Bakery frozen take & Bake

I fell in love with the dinner rolls and the baguettes, now cannot find them at Stater Bros. or Ralphs where I used to get them. Sent e-mail to customer service at LaBrea. Reply was they are now in refrigerated section! but neither store knows anything about them! Come on, why have customer srvice if they don't know the answers?

No Excuse

Stopped in the other day-Huntington Beach for lunch. Not very busy at the time, ordered what they call a taco cup. It is a small tortilla, cup shape, filled with the usual taco/tostada stuff. Total disappointment, The lettuce had not been drained well,as a result the shell was wet, the meat and beans were floating around like a soup. Beside all that, it was totally tasteless. They make a big splash about "healthy" cooking and no lard, but maybe they need to concentrate on end quality and presentation of food.

Discontinued at Trader Joe's (started 6/19/2011) [old]

Thanks for checking! I am still looking. I did find a fair substitue until I can find the "real Thing" Gelson Market(southern cal.) carries LaBrea Bakery French Rolls (frozen) that need a few minutes in the oven. The ingredients list is comparable. I just prefer the baguette style-I like crust but like the inside better so the baguette works for me.

T.J.'s Frozen Mini Baguettes from France

Loved those!! Asked about them in the Huntington Beach store yesterday and was told they no longer carry them! Any suggestions for replacements? Have not tried Costco yet.

The scones are awesome! Also the double chocolate biscotti in the cookie area. New item, roasted and sliced turkey breast in a tray in entree section-not the thin sliced in hanging pkg with luncheon meats. All in Huntington Beach store

better than best!!!!

The double chocolate biscotti is addictive!! Also, just tried the Blueberry Scones (freezer case)and they are awesome! New item in the ready to eat entree area-roasted sliced turkey breast is wonderful and so convenient. This is not the one on the luncheon meat rack. This is in a try and the slices are generous and less salty than the thin sliced type. Huntington
Beach area.

New Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd Quarter 2011 [old]

For me, it was way "over the top" hot! I did not expect that from a Trader Joe product. They are usually "middle of the road". I was alone, while eating this and terrified. since about the third bite , all of a sudden, I hit a "hot spot" and started choking. Grabbed water! Wrong! Hit the milk and finally got my breath! Out went the Salad. I am referring to the one that I purchased in the freezer-not the refrigerated section. Beside that I thought it was awful tasting!

This is like Voltron ... Red Lobster and Olive Garden join forces!

Wonder when they will add bits of their "Capital Gill" to the bunch! I think it is such a joke to pay the steep prices at Capital Grill when it is owned and managed by the same forces! Maybe they can add a bit of the Lobster to the Grill menu then.
