St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake?

Mastro's has a very good butter cake on their menu. Don't know if is same as a St.Louis style but is very moist and tasty(and loaded with calories,I'm sure) This is a high end restaurant ,not a coffee shop or bakery but I am sure they Could be ordered for take out.

Where can I find a skin-on full fat pork butt?

If you have a Jons market in your area, give them a call. They carry a lot of Hispanic and other ethnic foods and I have purchased those skin on pork butts there, I don't know about the bone out but the butchers are usually very accomodating. My nearest is in HB but I know they have others in the valley and LA area.

Where is the "new" logo?

I have no indication of what post has already been read!! Bummer! A huge time waster! Seems every time things run smoothly someone decides to make bad changes and messes everyting up!!

LaBrea Bakery frozen take & Bake

Thanks for the info. I just got an e-mail from customer service at LaBrea saying they have discontinued the frozen products and they are now selling what you referred to as "take and bake" but they did not say where they could be found in the stores so you have solved that question for me. Does not sound like a "happy change" but will post when I give thm a try. I loaded up on the frozen ones I was able to find so it will be a while.

LaBrea Bakery frozen take & Bake

I found them! They are available at one of the Ralph's in Huntington Beach in a very upscale area of the city. Wonder if LaBrea is being choosy as to where they distribute them since they do do have them at other Ralph's I have called..

LaBrea Bakery frozen take & Bake

Thanks to both of you !!!! I am in the Newport Beach-Huntington Beach area. What area are you referring to? I will call both Ralphs and Gelsons here to see if they now have them!

LaBrea Bakery frozen take & Bake

I fell in love with the dinner rolls and the baguettes, now cannot find them at Stater Bros. or Ralphs where I used to get them. Sent e-mail to customer service at LaBrea. Reply was they are now in refrigerated section! but neither store knows anything about them! Come on, why have customer srvice if they don't know the answers?

Costco food finds - 4th quarter 2011 [old]

Where are you located? I am in Southern Cal. and have been looking for these for months!! Used to buy them at Tader Joe but they nho longer carry them and,a week ago, neither did my local Cosco in Fountain Valley!! I"m desperate! Help!!

No Excuse

OOPS! Above article is about LosBarcos on Beach Boulevard

No Excuse

Stopped in the other day-Huntington Beach for lunch. Not very busy at the time, ordered what they call a taco cup. It is a small tortilla, cup shape, filled with the usual taco/tostada stuff. Total disappointment, The lettuce had not been drained well,as a result the shell was wet, the meat and beans were floating around like a soup. Beside all that, it was totally tasteless. They make a big splash about "healthy" cooking and no lard, but maybe they need to concentrate on end quality and presentation of food.

Discontinued at Trader Joe's (started 6/19/2011) [old]

Thanks for checking! I am still looking. I did find a fair substitue until I can find the "real Thing" Gelson Market(southern cal.) carries LaBrea Bakery French Rolls (frozen) that need a few minutes in the oven. The ingredients list is comparable. I just prefer the baguette style-I like crust but like the inside better so the baguette works for me.

T.J.'s Frozen Mini Baguettes from France

Loved those!! Asked about them in the Huntington Beach store yesterday and was told they no longer carry them! Any suggestions for replacements? Have not tried Costco yet.

Discontinued at Trader Joe's (started 6/19/2011) [old]

I just bought both Dorot basil and garlic at my Huntington Beach TJ yesterday. Disappointed to find they no longer stock the frozen baguettes (6 to a pkg).

better than best!!!!

Sorry! Forgot the scones, biscotti and turkey are all from Trader Joes

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 3rd quarter 2011 [Old]

The scones are awesome! Also the double chocolate biscotti in the cookie area. New item, roasted and sliced turkey breast in a tray in entree section-not the thin sliced in hanging pkg with luncheon meats. All in Huntington Beach store

better than best!!!!

above rport for TaderJoe

better than best!!!!

The double chocolate biscotti is addictive!! Also, just tried the Blueberry Scones (freezer case)and they are awesome! New item in the ready to eat entree area-roasted sliced turkey breast is wonderful and so convenient. This is not the one on the luncheon meat rack. This is in a try and the slices are generous and less salty than the thin sliced type. Huntington
Beach area.

New Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd Quarter 2011 [old]

For me, it was way "over the top" hot! I did not expect that from a Trader Joe product. They are usually "middle of the road". I was alone, while eating this and terrified. since about the third bite , all of a sudden, I hit a "hot spot" and started choking. Grabbed water! Wrong! Hit the milk and finally got my breath! Out went the Salad. I am referring to the one that I purchased in the freezer-not the refrigerated section. Beside that I thought it was awful tasting!

This is like Voltron ... Red Lobster and Olive Garden join forces!

Wonder when they will add bits of their "Capital Gill" to the bunch! I think it is such a joke to pay the steep prices at Capital Grill when it is owned and managed by the same forces! Maybe they can add a bit of the Lobster to the Grill menu then.

Mastro's Newport Beach

A table by the window is most desired at any time. Even after dark the twinkling lights from the moon shining on the ocean are spectacular! Our favorite spot is in the room reached after passing thru the bar area. It is less noisy and I prefer being away from the "bar scene" which ,I admit, can be really distracting with all the "bling"-fun but distracting. Don't miss anything! It is all good! I usually order that smallest of their steaks which is perfect for me.

Ciao bella gelato in Orange County? Trader Joes?

I have seen it at Sprouts, Henrys and Mothers Market all in the Costa Mesa Huntington Beach Areas. Maybe even at Ralph's.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay thread - 4th Quarter 2010 [OLD]

I bought the refrigerated one-kind of like a yogurt carton. No all that bad but would not buy again and I love hollandaise! I just seemed to be lacking something. I tried adding lemon and also salt but neither on took care of it!

The Capital Grille is opening in The Beverly Center - moved from the Los Angeles board

Same chain that owns Olive Garden and a few others of that catagory! Why would anyone expect top food at a facility of that chain? Of course, maybe the chefs have been trained at their "school" in Italy!!

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay thread - 4th Quarter 2010 [OLD]

I found they left an aftertaste of stale grease! Also, tried the frozen pumpkin pie and was disappointed. It was rather grainy instead of velvety smooth.Read the ingredients and first one was heavy cream and none of the other ingredients sounded like they would contribute to this. The crust was totally undesirable.

yellow pumpins?

Planted "giant" pumpkin seeds late August (southern california). First time venture! They started to show vines , flowers and leaves early on, but noticed, when the fruit started, it was tiny white balls, then turning yellow as they grew. Some did not make it but those that did, remained bright yellow! Was it the type of seed or did I expect too much too soon? They felt a bit "mushy and the stems were very moist when cut. 3 of the ones that got to be carving size were about the size of volleyballs. Should I plant earlier next year or cut earlier and let dry a bit?

Five guys-Huntington Beach

Stopped by there today. Not impressed! Free peanuts in the shell don't make up for the lack of taste! The cheeseburger was dry-in spite of lettuce ,mayo, pickles and grilled onions and -other than the toppings pretty tasteless. The bun had a strange, powdery or floury texture. I'm not a fry fan, and after seeing what appeared to be dry, overdone fries,I did not change my mind. They have soft drinks but no shakes!! Being fairly new to the area, they had at least 10 employees for every customer and a huge number of "manager types" walking around, checking quality, etc. No drive thru. Considerable wait for food! Cannot imagine how they will last in this area where we have numerous choices. Tried the new Counter last week. Now that is a wonderful experience and their fries could become an addiction with me

Whats up with light blue background?

Makes it extremely difficult to read and a huge shock to the eyes when going from a dark background to the light and bright!!

Capital Grille, Costa Mesa...not good! [moved from LA board]

No surprise! We did not even take them up on free pre-opening dinner knowing it is a Darden enterprise (Olive Garden, etc) Season 52,in same area is also part of their act. They chose an area with a lot of competition! Wonder how long they will be around this are?

Where did new posts go

I have lost the unread or new post feature again (since yesterday) This happens frequently on weekends! I do not wish to go thru all the posts I have previously read!

Hot posts/unread post?

In the last few days this option has disappeared. Now, when I cloick on a post it brings up those from as far as early this year. I do not want to sift thru all that to get to the latest ones. This has just happened recently-had been ok thru the changes till now.
