What are you baking these days? May 2012

Happy birthday!

What are you baking these days? May 2012

It's 1am, and I have a blueberry-buttermilk cake in the oven. I was going to wait to do it in the morning, before people came over for brunch, but I was on the phone with Comcast and I knew it was going to take a while ... so here I am waiting for this to come out of the oven. I used frozen wild blueberries from TJs--the only ones I've seen in stores so far are the big ones, and I like the smaller ones for something like this.

Wisconsin Food in DC, MD, VA?

Frozen custard, Wisconsin-style, at The Dairy Godmother in Alexandria's Del Ray neighborhood. It's very good.

The temperature (and humidity) is rising here, so I made what could be the last roast chicken for a while (with lemongrass, garlic etc), along with fresh buttermilk cornbread, steamed asparagus, and watermelon.

Yum ... I love anadama bread.

I love Cheesetique too!

Cheese Afficionado--not just a chip lover

My favorite place to buy cheese is Cheesetique, in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. You can buy some of their cheeses at WF or elsewhere, but the staff there is really knowledgeable and friendly. Some of my current favorites are Piave Vecchio, an aged cow's milk cheese; Midnight moon, an aged Gouda-like goat cheese; d'Affinois and d'Affinois blue (which can be hard to find, but so good); and Etorki, a sheep's milk cheese. If you're looking more locally, I love the fresh feta from Blue Ridge Dairy; you can get it at the Dupont and Silver Spring farmers markets (and possibly others.)

Sandwiches with roast chicken, bacon (baked with honey and black pepper), and avocados, on challah. Yum.

That sounds SO good.

It's National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day - I *had* to make them, yk? Melted butter, 2 c of pecans, 1.5 c of semisweet (Ghirardelli) chips.

Lemon bars, from the Barefoot Contessa. I halved the recipe but used a slightly larger pan (than the 8x8 half would use), so the crust was much thinner--and really good.

What's for Dinner #143 [OLD]

Simple dinner after a huge (and delicious) brunch: grilled burgers (beef and veggie), grilled zucchini with melted aged Gouda, and roasted red peppers. Lemon bars for dessert.

What's for Dinner #143 [OLD]

Baked hake, sweet potatoes, sauteed zucchini, and Rainier cherries (first of the season for me ... yum!)

What's for Dinner #143 [OLD]

Antipasto pasta (or using up what's in the fridge): Tortellini baked with mozzarella, salami, roasted red peppers, and artichoke hearts, in a tomato sauce.

What's for Dinner #143 [OLD]

Baked pesto chicken with fusili. Also avocado slices and watermelon (separately, not together.)

I just made espresso brownies, basing my recipe on the KAF fudge brownie recipe. The recipe is excellent all on its own, but I added more espresso powder (2x the amt called for), white and semisweet chips, and walnuts. Oh, and I used KAF cocoa, which is so dark and yummy.

Your soup sounds yummy!

Yeah, I just don't get it. I was thinking maybe the recipe in the book is different from what they use in the store -- but Caitlin's comment makes me think otherwise. I love brownies and have a number of favorite recipes, but there's always room for more. Next I think I'll try the ones from Flour.

She'd been asking for weeks lol (except that it was raining or someone was busy etc).

What's for Dinner #142 [old]

Grilled Vietnamese(ish) meatballs--in both turkey and tofu versions--with a ginger-lime dipping sauce. The meatballs were wrapped in lettuce leaves along with cilantro, grated carrots, grated zucchini, and scallions. Oh and rice. I hadn't been planning on making these tonight, but a teenager asked very nicely ... and they are tasty.

Has anyone else made these brownies? I have to say I'm disappointed, after the rave reviews I've heard about them. I kinda knew going in that that they didn't have a lot of chocolate, but I followed the recipe since it was the first time. They're moist and good brownies consistency, just not very chocolatey, IMO.

I made the original Fat Witch brownies and also cream biscuits today. Haven't tasted the brownies yet, but it smells delicious in here.
