Must eats: first visit to San Diego
Just to clarify, "Taco Shops" are a SD specialty, esp. for things like rolled tacos and burritos.
Cole's Re-Opening Party - 100th birthday Dec 6 noon-4
me neither...top sandwich and part of its original charm was that it was downright dark and fairly empty.

Have any Chowhound Faves Broken Your Heart
Great story. They really are different experiences and I think you hit it with the quality and pacing ideas. In addition to the care Chantilly puts into filling each choux, the way they serve a glass of perfectly chilled water along side their pastry sets a much different tone than the old DIY free water dispenser at Beard Papa (Sawtelle location). I like BP for what it is and enjoy their puffs sometimes, but I love Chantilly for the details.

I *really* wanted to love Primo's buttermilk donuts after hearing all the chowpraise. It was walkable from where I lived, the vibe was friendly and famililar, it's a mom & pop business, all good. So I tried them cold and I tried them fresh & hot but it just didn't click with me. The glaze is fragrant and pleasant at first, but then dissolves into overwhelming sweetness and dead flat flavor. The cake part seems heavy and fried so it's both too hard & too soft at the same time.
I'm more of a Bob's donut kind of gal. I enjoy the delicacy of their buttermilk cake's fine crumb, the balance btwn the sweet and tanginess, its light & airy quality.
Diddy Riese tastes like the mediocre cheap cookie it is. I say this as a Bruin. I spent more time at Mrs. Field's to be honest. Wedge some crappy quality ice cream btwn two Diddy Riese and....well at least it didn't cost much but seems like a lot. That submarine sandwich place next to the Tommy's knock-off shack thrives on the same idea.
Porto's overall quality tastes about a half step above a super market bakery to me...but a lot of people dig that. A lot. Their guava and cheese is good, but I prefer the filling & pastry crust at Venice Bakery.
The way people talk about John O'Groats on this board is so different from my experiences there. The food is good but not remarkable. I couldn't find a distinctive edge or personality to the basic breakfast offerings. I don't like their biscuits (they taste too much of baking powder). It doesn't feel "homey" or a particularly friendly setting, but that's just me. I'd rather drive to Nick's downtown for ham & eggs or San Pedro (JeetJet mentioned a bunch of great spots in a recent post).
JiRaffe...a very pretty place with perfectly decent food. Been there twice a few years apart but the experiences didn't knock my socks off. I like the approach of their menu, the veggie touches, but it didn't excite me.
Looking for lunch with booze in Culver City
Pyragirl said "no frou frou" --- if she's referencing TGI Friday's as a place they'd gravitate toward, my guess is her company is going to think FO is ridiculous.
A Taste Of Japan in So Cal? 2008 Mitsuwa Umaimono Gourmet Fair (Costa Mesa) [Review]
The shark's fin ramen and waffles are intriguing... I'll be at Torrance on Sunday as well. Informal meet up ?
Looking for lunch with booze in Culver City
Hmmm....boozy non-ethnic lunch, maybe a bit loungey? Dear John's or George Petrelli's might be their speed.
Any great Mediterranean Markets in Hollywood/West LA Area?
La Bottega Marino works nicely for picnic-style meals (ie. Hollywood Bowl) and I'd imagine for boating as well...Italian-style sandwiches, salads, cakes, cookies, sodas, wine, etc.

I like Filippi's antipasto salad too. You forgot to mention the iceberg lettuce sdnativa ! *ducks *
The Fishery (SD) has reopened
Hurrah ! I had no idea about the remodel...great to hear an update on the food and increased seating.
A Tale of Two Bakeries - Europane and Le Pain Quotidien
Ooooh that's a great idea ! You could also get raw cream at the Wed market and make Eton Mess with strawberries and LPQ meringues .
Best live/eat neighborhood in LA
I agree with you about the heavy traffic and can't speak to living in MV, Venice, MDR...but I said it was reliable and possible from West LA, not fun. However, when you have a guaranteed 80 minutes of daily "me time" to fall asleep, meditate, etc, whilst being driven to work, it can be a positive experience :-) Hubby wasn't the only one doing it, as the bus was full of fellow commuters and he met some nice people to boot on that particular bus line.
The neighborhood around Sawtelle Blvd./microtokyo has many interesting, walkable options: Japanese, Persian, Oaxacan, Italian, etc. You can walk or take a blue bus to Santa Monica (pubs, beach, farmer's market) or Westwood Village on the weekend. Late night Ktown fun is a straight shot down Olympic.
Westwood challenge
Falafal King on Broxton?
More fancy and south of the village is Flame Persian Cuisine on Westwood Blvd...btwn the fresh bread, soup, salads, and appetizers, it's a more exciting veggie option than say Good Earth.
Father's Office, What's the big deal?
I'm not a fan of the bleu cheese either...way too much going on with that burger...it exhausts my palate.

Wow, sad to hear the comments about Sunnin's decline. These boggle my mind:
Primo's Donuts
Diddy Riese
Nook
JiRaffe
Porto's
John O'Groats
Dinah's
Father's Office
Al Gelato
Authentic kolache recipe?
Plenty of Czechs immigrated to Ohio (like mine)...and of course the Bohemians who moved to Vienna and influenced baking with their recipes and skill :-)
A great cookbook on pastry and the traditions of cafe culture from the Austro-Hungarian empire is Kaffeehaus by Rick Rodgers. It's worth a look for his Dalmatian four-flavor kolacky recipe, which has typical Czech fillings like apricot, prune/plum, poppy seed, and farmer's cheese.
*CHALLENGE! * In Europe, BBQ flavor is paprika flavor. What else could it be?
I've had "Red Paprika" flavored chips (Chio brand made in Hungary) in the Czech Republic . To my American tastebuds, my impression was that they tasted similiar to our bbq chips...a little sweet, tangy with tomato and sweet red dried chili undertones, and slightly piquant. A more spicy chip was labeled "Hot Peperoni" flavor, a reference to red hot chili peppers, not sausages.
Any good deals on sweetened condensed milk?
Also thickness varies... Ola Blanca brand has much more body than Carnation. I think Top Valu still carries it.
Best live/eat neighborhood in LA
"I think the key is that you are working downtown, so the westside is out for commuting reasons."
Not entirely true. My husband lived in WLA and commuted downtown for years on the #10 freeway express Big Blue Bus...a very reliable option.
Where to find a good Deli and Italian Bread??
That sounds cool. I think A-1 carries it...here are a few more bakeries & some details. Feedback, corrections, chime in hounds:
-Portofino
1213 S. Meyler St., San Pedro
-Buscemis
2223 S. Pacific Ave, San Pedro
-Delizioso Bakery
481 W. 2nd Street, San Pedro
-Giuliano's Deli & Bakery
3849 Torrance Blvd., Torrance
sidenote: new pizza place opening soon--Pavich's Pizza at 2303 Alma St. (close to Baltic Bakery)
Where to find a good Deli and Italian Bread??
Really like A-1 too...good prices on Caffe Kimbo espresso, Rega canned beans, fresh cuts of parmesan, a decent bread selection...just wish they carried Latini pasta.
Thanks for the tip on Joseph's cookies & pizza :-)
Key Lime Pie
If you don't want to dash out and buy a Mexican lime juicer try a fork or corn-on-the-cob holder. Room temp limes and kneading them on the counter top first helps too.
Food for a shark-themed party?
Interesting. According to the US Army Survival Manual, too many drops could attract sharks at open sea.
I'm thinking of a centerpiece made from a fishbowl/aquarium filled with blue jell-o and Barbie and Ken dolls. Or blue jell-o shots with gummy sharks.
What are your favorite Rick Bayless recipes?
From Authentic Mexican:
-pollo deshebrado (shredded poached chicken)--for burritos
-carne deshebrada a la norteña (northern-style shredded beef with tomatoes)-for burritos
-pescado a la Veracruzana (fish fillets with fresh tomatoes, capers, and olives)
-carne con chile Colorado (meat in red-chile sauce)-for tamale filling
-cebollitas asadas (charcoal-grilled baby onions with lime)
-margarita (tequila-lime cocktail with lime-zest water)
Hungarian Food Festival in Northridge
Sorry I missed this festival ! The sweet Hungarian pretzel sounds similiar to a tubular pastry I had in Prague last summer called staročeské trdlo and what the poster in this thread wrote about at Zoltan's Transylvania Bakery:
