I recently had Czapiga Valentine & Son in Meriden on 11 Cooper St
and it was excellent. That's all they make there is kielbasa.

Butter or oil in King Arthur Flour golden vanilla cake mix?

The original recipe calls for half butter and half oil. I didn't notice that at first. I'm sure the oil would make it more moist.

Butter or oil in King Arthur Flour golden vanilla cake mix?

I have this King Arthur flour golden vanilla cake mix I'm going to make. Calls for 1/2 cup of oil or two sticks of butter. I know butter tastes better but what is your opinion on the texture? Or keep it half and half like the original recipe says?

Have any of you made a real buttercream icing before?

Thanks both of you. You are right meerastvargo, I don't think I will be needing ten cups of icing! I have been intimidated by real cream probably because of the sugar and the candy thermometer.

Whatever happened to Mon Cheri hazelnut chocolates?

I bought the liquor filled version and did not like them. I didn't realize when I bought them they were filled with liquor. Ended up throwing them out in the trash.

Knife sharpening in Milford, CT

I was doing a search online last week for the closest knife sharpening to my home and I stumbled upon this guy in Milford, CT. It's called The Essential Edge and he runs it out of his home in the Devon section of town. I dropped off my 24 year old Henckels's chef's knife that was extremely dull and he called me back within 3 hours. The gentleman's name is Joe Vigorito and phone is 203-877-9174. website theessentialedge.com

Homemade chicken soup question

I enjoyed the soup last night. Growing up, my parents would make it and serve it with crackers and peanut butter and that's the way I ate it last night. I thought this was normal until I told and continue to tell friends today and they never heard of the combo.

Homemade chicken soup question

It's salted and I mean very salted. It took a lot of salt to improve the flavor. I was surprised.

Homemade chicken soup question

I want to make chicken soup, am I better off using a roasted chicken from my local market or should I start off with a raw chicken and simmer it in water? Thanks!

Have leftover roast chicken and sourcream in the fridge.....

We ended up making this chicken enchilada recipe that we have made in the past. It's so good!

Ingredients
8-8" flour tortillas
2 large chicken breasts cooked (about 6-8 oz each)
1-8 oz bottle green taco sauce , we used LaVictoria brand
1 cup sour cream
1 1/2-2 cups cheese shredded (Monterey Jack or Mexican Blend)
3 green onions diced

Instructions
Line a 13X9 pan with a 1/2 sheet of parchment paper for easy clean up.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use room temperature tortillas.

Shred chicken, it's easiest to do this when the chicken is warm. I put mine in my kitchen-aid mixer like in this post here.

Mix 6 oz. of green sauce with the yogurt. Use all but 1/2 cup of the sauce to mix with the chicken,

Add about 1/3 cup of chicken to each tortilla and roll the tortillas and place the seam down into the pan. Spread the remaining green sauce mix over the tops of the tortillas and top the tortillas with cheese, onions and the remaining 2 oz of green sauce.

Bake for 30 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted and the center of the enchiladas are hot.

Chocolate babka made with butter in CT

Can I find chocolate babka made with butter not palm oil in CT anywhere but in the style on NYC babkas? Not liking the New York styles made with palm oil, it does not taste good. Thanks!

Chocolate babka made with butter not palm oil

Thanks, looks like I won't be finding one too soon if that place on the upper eat side only makes 6 per day!

Chocolate babka made with butter not palm oil

Is it me or does the New York chocolate babka made with palm oil not taste good. Maybe me taste is changing but when I was younger I used to enjoy the chocolate babka from Zabars but I don't like it anymore. Are there any places in the city to find one made with butter?

What do New Yorker's think about Dean & DeLuca and other expensive gourmet shops?

I stopped in here yesterday after not going in for a few years. I used to love going in here whenever I did my food rounds in the city. Now I know why I don't go here anymore. I walked out without buying a thing because there comes a point when this place becomes a total rip off. $3.75 for one small donut, $34 for a small box of cookies from Germany? I don't think so. $25 for another small box. $15.00 for a chocolate babka and not even made with real butter but palm oil. What do you native New Yorkers think about places like this? Do you have other places to get "gourmet" food items or do you pay these prices? Is this a tourist spot?
