I think I might be looking for something with a bit of romance to it.

We will be in SF for 3 days near the end of september. We would like one nice dinner at a classic SF restaurant. We are staying at Hotel G. I'm not much into seafood but my partner is so I guess a bit of a variety would work. Don't want to dress up with a jacket and tie. Thanks!

Musings on the relatively low activity on Southern New England Board

The food sections in the newspapers today except the New York Times are plain awful.

Musings on the relatively low activity on Southern New England Board

Guess I've opened a can of worms here. I put off getting a smart phone for the longest time and two years ago I was a convert and swear by them now. You have the world of information anywhere you happen to be.

With the phone it makes it easier to find a place when you are out and get reviews right away. I think chowhound is more for specialized dinners and specific places.

Shop Rite

I believe BJ's in Derby carries Dietz and Watson.

I love the Fresh Market in Westport. Their in store baked cookies made with butter are delicious!

Have you noticed the bake Chabaso bread in the store bakery now and have changed the packaging.

I love going down to Fairway now and then. It's a 40 minute trip for me but I usually walk around the crazy expensive antique centers in the area and make an afternoon of it.

I have been using urbanspoon and yelp mostly, unless I know where I am going ahead of time or going on vacation and looking for specific advice from you guys.

Anywhere in CT to buy local chicken or grass fed beef

I haven't bought it yet but where I have my CSA in Bethany at Clover Nook Farm they sell their own farm raised beef.

Walmart Kills another Local Business

Thanks Bagelman and SteveSCT. I'll keep those places in mind and try Lao again and Hong Kong.

Walmart Kills another Local Business

I recently tried Hunan Pan in Shelton and it was mostly awful. Their fried rice is not sauteed in a wok at all in my opinion. It's gummy and dry and has no flavor whatsoever! The beef with broccoli was not bad but "where's the beef"? There was hardly any. The dipping sauce they give you with the steamed dumplings is very plain. I will not being going back here. Has anyone found out if the owners of Fortune Pavilion are reopening somewhere else? Where else can I go for takeout. One of my friends used to frequent Lao Szechuan in Milford but he ever said that's not as good anymore. Id I do order beef with broccoli elsewhere can I ask for more beef and say I am willing to pay more? I live in Ansonia and keep wondering where I am going to find decent chinese takeaway or dine in anymore?

Chocolatey Chocolate Cake Tips/Recipe Suggestions

The Hershey's cake is excellent and I have baked it and froze it ahead like you want too. That cake is my go to chocolate cake and I have had many requests over the years from family and friends and coworkers for it.

Which one of these ricotta cheesecakes looks better

Thanks but now I am thinking about doing half cream cheese and half ricotta because ricotta can be grainy. From what I am reading, I should drain the ricotta overnight in cheesecloth.

Which one of these ricotta cheesecakes looks better

I've never made a ricotta cheesecake before so this Easter I'm going to give it a try. These recipes have come across my facebook page and I'd like to try one. I'm not concerned about the crust so much, just the fillings. One has more eggs and no cream and the other has less eggs and cream. Thanks for your opinions!

Recipe 1
Crust
1 1/2 cups (325 mL) graham cracker crumbs
2 tbsp (30 mL) granulated sugar
1/4 cup (60 mL) butter, melted

Filling
3 tubs (475 g/each) Tre Stelle® Extra Smooth Ricotta Cheese
1 1/2 cups (325 mL) granulated sugar
1/2 cup (125 mL) all purpose flour
1 tbsp (15 mL) vanilla extract
2 tsp (10 mL) freshly grated orange peel
7 eggs, lightly beaten
1/3 cup (75 mL) miniature chocolate chips
candied orange slices or shelled pistachios for garnish if desired
Preheat oven to 350ºF (175ºC).

Wrap all sides and bottom of a 9” spring form pan securely with a double layer thickness of aluminum foil. Combine all of the crust ingredients together and press evenly across the bottom and 1/2” up the sides of the pan. Bake for 10 minutes; allow to cool before filling.

In a large bowl beat Ricotta Cheese and granulated sugar until smooth. Beat in flour, vanilla and orange peel. Add beaten eggs one at a time and blend on low speed only until incorporated (do not over mix). Carefully pour into prepared pan and sprinkle with chocolate chips. Place in a large baking pan and add 1” of hot water to the pan.

Bake for 75 minutes or until centre is almost set. Carefully remove pan from oven and lift out spring form pan and place on a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes. Remove aluminum foil; run a sharp knife around edge of pan to loosen; allow to cool an additional hour and remove side of pan. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Garnish with candied oranges or pistachios if desired.

Recipe 2
Ingredients

7 oz pkg cannoli shells
3 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
2 tablespoons sugar
4 cups whole milk ricotta cheese
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/4 cup flour
1/2 cup whipping cream
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon orange zest
5 large eggs
1/3 cup mini chocolate chips
Confectionery sugar for sprinkling

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9 inch springform pan with parchment. Crush canolli shells in a food processor, add butter and 2 tablespoons sugar and continue to pulse until med-fine crumbs. Press crumbs firmly onto bottom of pan. Bake 10 minutes. Let cool.
Beat ricotta cheese, remaining sugar and flour in bowl of electric mixer on medium until well blended. Add whipping cream, vanilla and zest; mix well. Add eggs, 1 at a time, mixing just until blended after each addition. Pour over crust.
Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes, then sprinkle top with the chocolate chips delicately, pressing chips in lightly. Continue to bake 10 more minutes or until center is almost set. Run knife around rim of pan to loosen cake. Cool before removing rim of pan. Refrigerate 4 hours or more. Before serving sprinkle with confectionery sugar. Top with whipped cream if desired. Store leftovers in refrigerator, serves 10.

It's funny you say that because the wine shop owner only told me a few months. I guess he wants me to buy more bottles. Where do you store open sherry?

Chicken and broccoli stir fry question, rice wine

I'm making a recipe of Chinese style chicken and broccoli and it's been years since I made it. It calls for rice wine. I don't feel like going out and buy a bottle, last time I got it was at an Asian market. Can I use a dry amercian wine? Other recipes I looked up called for sherry but my local liquor store only sells big bottles of sherry and I'll never use it all before it goes bad. Should I go out and get the rice wine? Thanks!

New Haven: Bakeries and/or lobster rolls?

Marjolaine on State St in New Haven isn't a huge bakery but their stuff is very good and also at the end of Wooster St is Libby's Italian bakery.

Has anyone made a pork loin roast this way?

http://www.bigdaddyskitchen.com/cookb...

Thought it kinda odd that you roast the pork for a certain amount of time and then take it out and let it rest and then put in back in the oven. Thanks!
