Restaurant with vegan and meat options in Salem/Swmapscott area

Not Salem'Swampscott but Anmol in Beverly might also do the trick in terms of the range of options you are hoping to find...http://www.anmolindia.com

The best recommendation I can make is Gourmet Garden in Vinnin Square in Swampscott....they accommodate a whole range of dietary needs + preferences and the food is decent (if not mind-blowing)....

Vinoteca de Monica recs?

Have only been there once so not a wide cross-sampling to say the least (!!) but we really enjoyed the diver scallops, pumpkin ravioli and marsala chicken. I am not a big wine drinker but they have an interesting cocktail list and the "Blood Orange" was tasty indeed.

So a Panera is coming to the Fresh Pond plaza (Whole Foods side)...

I give Panera points for having options that you can combine carefully for a reasonable (in terms of calories etc) meal without too much hassle. I definitely appreciate folks' concerns about sodium levels but since that is not something I worry about (yet!) I am always grateful to encounter a Panera vs. say a Subway or FreshCity. I just like the options better. Plus the wifi and ability to refill coffee at your pleasure are a plus if you are looking for somewhere to camp out while waiting on someone or having an informal out-of-the-office meeting. I have always found the counter staff to be friendly and well-meaning if not consistently speedy or all-knowledgeable and they accommodate multiple special requests (dressing on the side etc etc ) without eye-rolling or sighs!

Rialto first timer

Had never had the pleasure of dining at Adams' fine establishment before this Saturday night but understand now what all the raves are about.

Started with the bay scallops punctuated by bits of blood orange which popped in the mouth and segued to the Cacciucco--the most upscale fisherman's stew I have ever encountered. Each morsel of seafood was cooked to perfection including the teeny tiny baby octopus which was nestled underneath the garlic-heavy (but delicious!) crouton.

Ended with the chocolate crema and could not decide whether I loved the rich warmth of the cake or the bright sweetness of the accompanying coconut sorbet better.

DCs were similarly thrilled by the freshness of the greens in the hearty greens first and seafood in their mains.

Service was exquisite and perfectly timed. A giant thumbs up from this diner!

Does anyone have a sense for whether this would be comfortable for a solo diner? I have wanted to try it for a while but do not have a good DC in mind for the outing!

Early Saturday dinner not too far from Cambridge Hyatt; ambient noise and mobility considerations?

Might something in the Kendall area qualify as close enough since you will be cabbing it? I could recommend Catalyst--not too loud and always has some tasty seafood options on hand.

ISO Mussels in Coconut Broth

Not a broth but the Co-Co Curry Mussels (Appetizer menu) at Lam's in Newton (Washington Street) are DELICIOUS!

Kika Tapas - 1st Impressions

Went here last week for dinner and was not blown away. The decor is nice but the hard surfaces make things noisy. Not lively. Noisy.

Tapas came as they will in fits and starts but there was a loooooooooooooooong lag getting our final two and, judging by the lukewarm temp on these, they were sitting somewhere for a while.

Top picks were the mussels and the spinach with pine nuts and raisins. I would rate Solea a good few notches above Kika and Jaleo (at least when I have tried it in DC) still further up the scale.

Service was sweet but somewhat absent-minded. "Oh that's right! I was going to get you water!"

Attractive new Thai/Vietnamese restaurant in Chelsea

Each time I go here I leave wondering why I don't make the trip more often. Wandered in for a late dinner last night and was again blown away by the freshness, heat (in a good way!) and overall flavor of the food. Had the sauteed coconut curry lemongrass tofu with a delectable side of the garlic greens and regretted recent, much-less-satisfying trips for American Chinese style in the area. This place is the real deal and also has the best Tom Yum Seafood soup I have had this side of Bangkok/Siem Reap!!

Special Teen birthday party - looking for funky, affordable restaruant/club for 25-30

We actually did a great party for my little sister when she was 16 at ZuZu! It definitely has the veggie options desired and meets the funky requirement too in my opinion. They were very accommodating working with our pricepoint and creative about seating etc.

I woke up, it was a Chelsea morning...

Tijuana rocks! As someone who grew up in Newton and is infinitely more familiar (dare I say comfortable??) in various Brookline-Cambridge-Somerville joints, I have developed a real love for this place. Their complimentary salsa fresca is out of this world and the tortilla chips tend to be hot. great way to start what is sure to be a delicious, substantial and authentic meal. not to mention their GREAT margarita ; )

On the hunt for Doner Kebab (turkish/ spanish style)!

Cafe Divan in Georgetown might be just what you are looking for. I love this little place and they do a great version that meets your description to a T. No hookah but great cocktails might make up in part for that, right??

Dinner near Kendall Square?

I would give a hearty second to the Helmand and Casa Portugal.

Around this time of the year Helmand is particularly nice with the bread baking in the brick oven and all!

Papa Razzi Restaurants - Uncommonly nice experience

Hate to add to the dreaded "love fest" here but I too enjoyed a rare experience at the Burlington MA location last night. Aside from the language butchery that was in part the result of our Russian (incredibly sweet and attentive though) server and in part the general US murder of things like "bruschetta" and "al forno" the food was great and the service as mentioned, very nice. I quite enjoyed my non-so-traditional Gamberi alla brace--roasted sides were particularly tasty as well. The focaccia is inauthentic in a thicker and slightly sourdoughish vein , but QUITE tasty for what it is. Olive oil to my buds was appropriately virgin and the wine was served at the right temp and was equally tasty. All in all a win for a chain OR NON-chain experience at this level generally.

Quiet restaurant in Boston or Cambridge?

Stanhope Grille at the Back Bay Hotel (inside obviously) might be a nice fit. The ceilings are lower than at many upper-end places, there is carpeting-wallcovering-and some seating is somewhat sheltered. I was there ~2 weeks ago and it was far from hopping and conversation (my party actually included an older gentleman who won't admit to his hearing/memory loss) was easy. They were nicely solicitous and the food was good....

Is there any Frozen Lemonade in Boston?

Not the same but could tide you over in some aspects...Panera is doing a strawberry lemonade (frozen) that is not too sweet

Chez Henri at the Bar -- Well Behaved 7 year old ok?

BIG thumbs up on the Portugalia suggestion. Muqueca can be a challenge with kids due to the limited seating.

Portugalia has a full bar, AWESOME + authentic food and I have seen them be really sweet/attentive to kids.

Favorite ethnic food in Newton or surrounds?

Another big thumbs up for Lam's. Their seafood is incredibly fresh and service far exceeds the casual setting and comfortable atmosphere in general. Every member of the staff is welcoming, efficient and gracious. They will make modifications to taste or need (allergies...) without hesitation. Co-Co Curry Mussels are a family favorite but I have yet to hit a dish there that I didn't like.

Nondairy "icecream" in Boston Area?

Cabot's in Newton has a soy base that they will use to whip up any flavor you want (The same way they make their frozen yogurt with one of those "drills"). I haven't tried the soy but do enjoy all the combinations one can come up with using the fro.yo base!

Best Restaurant / Bar for Large Nebulous Group on a Friday Night

I might get boo'd for this but we have always had great luck with such flexible numbers/compositions at Flat Top Johnny's in Kendall. You could always have a pool table and one of their high-tops so peopel could mix it up a little bit. They have a surprisingly good array of nibble for vegetarians/omnivores alike and the staff is always super-accommodating.

4/12/10 Teatro or Via Matta?

I would vote for Via Matta hands down (their monkfish and the rabe side are particular favorites). Teatro is not bad...it just never wows me. You can't beat it for a pre Opera House meal though!

Friendly Toast recs?

I am afraid I must join the "underwhelmed" chorus here. I would second (third?) the recc to stick with the savory side and deem the pancakes not worth the caloric hit. I would also steer clear of their coffee--cocoa seems to be of the Swiss Miss-prepared-with-water ilk despite menu claims...

How does Johnny D's make oatmeal so yummy?

The other non crockpot route that I have found works wonders--even with water as the liquid and generic. store-brand old-fashioned oats--is prepping it the night before with x cups oats to y cups water and letting it sit overnight. Even if I microwave this combo in the morning it somehow comes out "creamier" for having had the oats absorving all night...

How does Johnny D's make oatmeal so yummy?

Not based on actual insider knowledge but informed assumption. Better restaraunt taste (generally)= hidden fat. I would bet money that they use milk/cream vs. water to hydrate said oats + a pinch of salt to jazz it up. The first home trade I would heartily recommend before amping up your cal/fat intake with the milk/cream route is investing in old-fashioned or steel cut oats vs. the dusty instant stuff.
