VIetnamese Stores/ Where do you shop

The one on Lawrence at Black Creek is called Lawrence Supermarket in English. It is not as upmarket as T&T or 99 Ranch, but it should have what you want.

Shawarma @ Yonge North York Centre

If you don't want Korean, there are surprisingly few noteworthy places to eat in the area. Given the amount of restaurants in the area, one would think otherwise. Shawarma Max is as good as you get for Shawarma in the area. It is certainly better than the one north of Church or in the basement of the North York Centre.

For Korean, walk towards Finch for Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu Korean Restaurant or said Owl of Minerva. Thai Bistro is pretty basic Thai food but only a block north.

Pimento Available in Toronto

The lack of availability of Pimento wood chips, charcoal and leaves in Toronto has bee noted on this board in the past. There's good news those of us that want to make their own Jerk at home. You can now buy Pimento in the GTA. It's not cheap but it is available at the Ontario Gas BBQ in Vaughan.

Stockyards BBQ

You've got reason to be disappointed in that chicken. It is seriously overcooked.

In their defense, it isn't usually overdone. I've yet to find better southern fried chicken in a Toronto restaurant, which may be faint praise, but it is truthful. And I really like fried chicken. I see that you ate it in house. Very wise. Those fries do not travel well at all. I miss the onion rings which I understand are sometimes offered as a special.

Any cardoon sightings?

We saw them today at Longos on Weston and Langstaff in Woodbridge.

Favourite downtown Sandwich?

I agree that the Black Camel has a great pulled pork sandwich. I would stretch the limits of the core to include the veal sandwich at California Sandwiches on Claremont in Little Italy. It is a simple yet truly great sandwich.

Where to buy Beef Blood in Toronto Area.

Unless they've moved again, which would be awesome, you won't find Canada Compound on St Clair W. A few years ago they moved to Woodbridge from Caledonia Ave. http://www.canadacompound.com/

That said, you can find hanks of their casings in some of the small butcher shops on St Clair W. Lady York on Dufferin has also had them in the past.

Restos on St Clair West - suggestions?

Da Gianni e Maria has changed hands and is now a Portuguese restaurant.

Marcello's on St Clair east of Dufferin is slightly out of the OP's map range, but it is cheap, cheerful and open on Sundays. Good Pizza's

KETJAP MANIS: Where can I purchase a good one downtown?

T&T should have it. In the past, I've seen it downstairs at the St Lawrence (south) Market in the smaller of the spices/sauces stores, but it's cheaper in Chinatown. Look for ABC Brand Ketjap Manis. It is the Heinz Ketchup of Indonesia. It's everywhere there. Which is a funny thing, because Heinz bought the brand.

Shopping trip to Etobicoke suggestions

When I've been across the street at Brunos or the Magoos, I have often wondered about Ma Maison. What do you recommend from there?

Shopping trip to Etobicoke suggestions

If you go to Mississauga for Brandt, then you may want to stop at Starsky's for something too. It's a big Polish grocery store. http://www.starskycanada.com/

If you don't go to Mississauga, you can check International Food Depot for a smaller selection of German stuff. It's next to European Meats.

Restaurants I love, you hate

Church's may be coming back to Ontario. Their logoed sign is on the window on the SW corner of Dufferin and St Clair. Paper covering and request for resumes have been on the windows for at least a month now.

Restaurants around Yonge and Finch area

Considering the volume of places to eat, I find the area of Yonge between Sheppard and Steeles to pretty anemic for good non-Korean/non-Iranian food. If you want a burger, don't waste your time at the Jon Anderson's near finch or Jetsun's near North York Centre. Go up Yonge to north of Steeles to Golden Star. Their home made burger (not the standard one) is good. It's an old school burger joint that actually has good burgers.

Thai Bistro north of North York Centre is a basic space with a small menu. Their offerings are simple but pretty good. It's the best Thai that I've had on Yonge north of the 401.

Best place to buy trotters (pig's feet) in toronto?

Which recipe? I've got a few in the freezer.

Queen and Beaver

I really like this place. Their steak and kidney pudding is the best steak and kidney that I've had in an Ontario restaurant for a long long time. They'll even throw in oysters! An added bonus is that the downstairs is busy but not loud.

Maple syrup trip?

We were at Kortright last week. It was very busy. They had horses, demos etc.

It is true that the open maple syrup demos are down a bumpy hill. It was also very muddy. If you do go with a stroller, you can go to the old fashioned demo then the modern demo without too much trouble. We were advised go back the same way after the modern demo. It is a much easier walk.

Toronto's Best Fried Chicken

A third here for Stockyards. It only comes in a chicken/fries combo. I just wish they'd let me switch their fries for their onion rings. They are as good as the chicken.

Best Churrasco Chicken?

I've only had it the one time and it hasn't been open too long, so I wouldn't write it off just yet. Maybe they just need to find their feet. They do deliver.

Port Charlotte

We were more in the Rotonda area rather than Port Charlotte proper. The one meal that stood out from the rest was at the Fishery in Placida. The fish tasted good and was fresh. It's loud, but not deafening which made it a great place for our young children to fit in. The staff and customers were all very friendly. Like many of the restaurants, the rush was over early. In other parts of Florida, it may not be a standout, but in the area it was.

Black History Month - recs?

Did someone say Southern US food? The best southern fried chicken that I've had in a restaurant in Toronto is available at the Stockyards on St Clair at Christie. Their ribs and onion rings aren't bad either. There's not a ton of seating, so they also do a booming takeout business.

Best Churrasco Chicken?

I've had the chicken and ribs along with the potatoes. The sauce on the chicken had a little bite, but wasn't hot. I don't know how they cook the meat, but the chicken and ribs didn't have much smoke/charcoal flavour. Unlike some churrascos, the chicken was actually pretty moist. The potatoes were soft, but otherwise tasted OK. The food was fine. I wouldn't come from out of the neighbourhood for what I had. That said, it is likely the best chicken you can get for delivery in the immediate area.

Hidden gems on St. Clair W?

The space has been turned into Sunnyville Grill. They offer all day breakfast. I've only been the once--the eggs were cooked to order and the staff were eager. The decor is basic, but it's much better value than Boom.

Hidden gems on St. Clair W?

They have a website now, although it lacks pictures. http://thaishaninn.com

I just looked at their menu. They still put green and red peppers in half the dishes. Do they still use the plastic tablecloths as bags for cleanup?
