What's for Dinner? #146 - Memorial Day Edition

I take it you guys know each other (chuckles softly to himself).

What's for Dinner? #146 - Memorial Day Edition

Lazy, lazy weekend.

We got up late, shared some "J", ate eggs and hash and kind of moved on, slowly. Burgers one night, pasta Bolognese another.

All the herbs are planted now, tomatoes, too (about time). Netting is in place to keep the critter squeeze down to 10 per-cent or less. We'll see.

A salute to 'keg and all my brothers/sisters on this Memorial Day.

Best Cheese pizzas?

A very useful/practical list.
Thanks.

mc,
rub dirt on it and quit complaining. :-)

Very cool.

Pork Milanese was tonight's meal. Egg noodles and a fresh salad on the side. House beer, house wine to wash things down. I launched Burn Notice Season Four on the plasma.

Enjoy the long weekend.

Leftover hanger steak is on the menu. There will be leftover black bean salad on the side. I'll warm the steak in a ceramic pot with a lid, the beans will be served at room temperature. Spartan stuff for sure but that's the way it goes when you clean out the coolerator. Beer for me, wine for Deb.

plumbing happens.

Barilla is your friend. Sourcing top-quality guancale is the challenge. Farm-fresh eggs and killer cheese close the deal. Rome's Roscioli is the gold standard for me. It's a deli/wine store by day and a hipster dining destination at night with, arguably, the best carbonara in town.

shrimp and grits, very cool.
That will be on the table come Sunday morning.

Train from Rome to Naples - What about lunch?

ahh, low-impact tourism. Sounds like a plan.

Train from Rome to Naples - What about lunch?

Da Michele is a good late-lunch destination: close to the train station, modest in price, pretty spartan. Order a beer or two and add extra cheese on the pie. They like to wheel you in, wheel you out but that's ok given the low price point and the quality pizza. Not far away is Cappella Sansevero (you'll need directions or a good GPS/chartplotter on your smart phone). It houses Samartino's "veiled christ", arguably the best sculpture ever. Combine the two before shoving off, maybe hit the chapel first.

Burgers are on the menu.
Chuck will be ground on the Waring Pro, topping will be melted Land o' Lakes white American cheese sliced at my neighborhood deli. The meat will be pan fried, fresh tomatoes/onions at the ready. Delivery mechanism will be lightly toasted potato rolls. House-made pickles on the side. Beer for me, wine for Deb. Dessert will be the last of the raspberry cake.

"... delicious, salty, crystally parm."
Nicely said. Top quality parm, decent red is a late afternoon well spent.

What's for dinner #145 [old]

wow.

Valley-Style Arroz con Pollo. Recipe was cribbed from Epicurious.
We've made it before and it's mighty tasty. Deb is doing the heavy lifting.

Hi CM,
No need to reconstitute, just add the dry to the dry then add your wet ingredients. It's kind of cool stuff. Give it a shot if you get a chance.

I told you not to give up.

I did a google search on scooby snacks and came up with interesting results.

Good to hear that the "stupid boneless skinless breasts had real flavor to them."
Sounds like a great meal. Nice to hear the intellectually challenged fowl got with the program. :-)

All three meals sound excellent.
Why aren't you guys on the water? Did you participate in the draw-bridge migration out to the lake?

Raspberry buttermilk cake is the full name. Deb cribbed the recipe from a 2009 edition of Gourmet Magazine. She uses buttermilk powder and it seems to make a (slight) difference. It's a "goto" recipe as long as berries are in season. I whip up cream/vanilla/sugar to top the cake off. Always looking for alternatives, of course.

Pappardelle with Bolognese sauce is on tonight's menu.
Deb sourced the dry pasta at Whole Foods but she ground the chuck today (insert homage to the Waring Pro meat grinder here) and made the sauce. The house, of course, smelled great. House red to wash it down, raspberry cake for dessert. I'm on KP.

Good food, good booze. Well done.
What the hell is a Scooby snack?

Let the record show that the aging Yankees are in the tank.

Nice. Home-made stock is simple and vital to good home cooking. I bet the house smelled great.

Happy Sunday, gingershelley.
Your food looks great.

Rome -- in search of informal, rustic, carefully prepared, beautifully fresh cooking that doesn't break the bank

Reservations are always a good idea (both lunch and dinner). My "goto" morning coffee place is the Caffe Farnese located on the alley that connects the Piazza Farnese and the Campo de' Fiori. I sit at a table outside, read the FT and engage in some really good people watching. La Gelateria Frigidarium, just off the Piazza Navona and a five-minute-walk from the Campo, is my "goto" gelato place.

The Campo has quality bakeries (Il Fornaio, Forno Compo de' Fiori, etc.) that can provide mid-day snacks, sandwiches and much more at very affordable prices (counter service for the most part). Plenty of places to eat in and around the Campo. Poke around the neighborhood and see what you come up with.

As far as getting around, the 116 bus (small, electric) is your friend.

very cool. A glorious day.

Thanks all,
Deb's raspberry cake was a home run. I whipped some cream/vanilla/sugar and spooned it over the top. Port on the side to wash it all down. Good times.

What is a Delmonico ribeye steak?

Was there a bone?
