Berkshire pork

Haven't posted on Chowhound since forever, but I 'm looking for a source for Berkshire pork in Bayside or environs. I am willing to travel for it, and I'd rather not order from Fresh Direct. Thanks!

csa convenient for eastern queens

I second (or third, or fourth) Golden Earthworm CSA. The produce is wonderful, the people are great, and the Alley Pond Park location is very convenient (I'm in Bayside, too). There are pick-your-own strawberries in June, and the farmers have a harvest festival in October, so you get to meet the guys who grow your food!

Creamy Tortilla Soup

I've posted this one before. The tortilla chips are the ones that come in a bag from the salty snack aisle of the market. You probably can use less than the recipe calls for. It's a really loose adaptation of the tortilla soup from Coyote Cafe in Santa Fe. My SO says it's orgastic.

2 cups tomatillos, cut up
2 cups mashed tomatoes (I use Pomi chopped tomatoes)
1 large onion, diced
3 cups fresh tomatoes, cut up

--Saute all in a large stockpot, then add:

1 1/2 teaspoons cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons oregano
1 chipotle from can of chipotles in adobo sauce, mashed--use more or less to taste
2 oz. lime juice

--Add to sauteed vegetables in stockpot and saute 2 minutes. Then add:

7 cups water
tortilla chips (original flavor, about 3 dozen)

--Add water and bring to a boil. Add tortilla chips, let soften, and puree with a submersible blender. Add salt and a bit of sugar to taste.

To serve, slice some fresh tortillas and fry until crispy. Sprinkle on top of bowls of soup, and if desired, garnish with sour cream or queso fresco, and avocado.

Red Potato Glut- ideas?

When my CSA supplies me with those delicious baby red potatoes, I always make this dish:

It can be a main course or a salad and it's quick and easy to put together.

Bought too much plain yogurt.. What do you make with it?

Turkish yogurt soup! The trick is to heat the yogurt very, very slowly so it doesn't curdle.

Beans (kidney, black, pinto, etc.) - keeping them interesting

Two of my favorite bean salads are the white bean and tuna described above by dmd_kc, but I also add lots of chopped parsley to it, or sometimes fresh dill. My other favorite is a drained can of black beans mixed with chopped onion, red and/or green pepper, avocado, olive oil and lemon juice, and seasoned with salt, pepper, and cumin.

For a cheater's version of a quick black bean soup, heat a can of black beans with its juice, add some salsa from a jar (medium, hot, any way you like it), season with some cumin, mash it to the texture you prefer, and thin with a little chicken or veggie broth. Put a dollop of sour cream or yogurt on top, and you're in business.

That leftover egg and breadcrumbs?

I have fond memories of my grandmother mixing the egg and crumbs together, seasoning it, and frying it to make pancakes for us kids. We thought it was the best part of the meal!

your favourite radish salad?

It's not as dense as "regular" egg salad, since there's no mayonnaise and the eggs are chunky--I slice them in an egg slicer, then turn them 90 degrees so that they are cross-cut. I guess radish salad with egg is the best description. 4 eggs to a small bunch of radishes sounds about right, lightly moistened with the vinaigrette, and lots of parsley. Of course, salt and pepper. Try it, then adjust the proportions to your liking. I'm never rigid about recipes, just usually eyeball it.

your favourite radish salad?

If it's a small bunch, use the whole bunch. Mostly, I cook by eyeballing it, so I guess it depends on how much you love radishes!

your favourite radish salad?

I've posted this before, but it's so good I'll post again. Hard boil and coarsely chop 4 eggs, slice thinly a mess of radishes, chop a handful of parsley, make a mustardy vinaigrette, and mix it all together gently. Lovely and different.

Amy's Place-Buffalo NY

We love Amy's. My oldest son discovered it when he went to UB and lived in University Heights (I still get the willies when I think about that house on Minnesota Ave), and it quickly became the place where we 'had" to have breakfast. Very vegetarian and vegan friendly, which is a plus. Lots of good memories.

Now that my youngest son has settled in Buffalo permanently, my favorite restaurant is Lombardo's on Hertl. But we're talking apples and oranges here.

rome

Jen, I knew about the Clinton connection because I did google the restaurant, and the person who recommended it had a brochure that I looked at, and the Clinton photo was quite prominent.

Zerlina, I'm wondering if the "assaggini" you mention is the same thing that the "recommender" told me about--you are asked if you prefer meat or fish, and then the kitchen prepares your dinner without your ordering any particular dish. My thought was that this was a good thing because the kitchen was (hopefully) using seasonal ingredients. Now I'm hoping that it's not just a way to use up leftovers!

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

rome

I was highly recommended to Osteria Romana di Simmi on via S. Paolo alla Regola. I did my standard Chowhound search and found no mention of it at all. Has anyone heard of it? Any comments?

CSA Deliveries in Flushing?

Don't know of any CSA that has home delivery service, but Golden Earthworm Farms has its pickups at the Alley Pond Park Environmental Center on Northern Blvd, just east of the Cross Island Parkway. I've been a member for 3 years now, and am very satisfied. You can check their website http://www.goldenearthworm.com for further information.

Fairway is coming!!

Just to keep everyone up-to-date, and to reassure us all that it's really happening, here's an article from a local newspaper Patience, everyone!

Italian food names

Thank you! This will certainly enhance my trip.

Actually, I speak French and Spanish, but never got around to learning Italian. In my experience, everyone is pleased when you speak their language. Food words, however, do tend to be more specific, and I don't want to end up with a plate of liver when I thought I was ordering a steak!

Italian food names

Last year, a Chowhound (possibly jennlbuc?) graciously shared with me a database of Spanish food words (translations), which was so helpful on my trip to Spain. This year, I'm visiting Italy. Does someone have a similar database for Italian food words? Or can you recommend a place for me to look for such translations, other than a traditional dictionary?
Thanks so much!

Hicksville Dosa Diner $9.95 Vegetarian brunch packs a punch

Even though we got there at 2:45, just as the buffet was closing, and the dishes were not quite as fresh as they ought to have been (from sitting out on the buffet for a while) it was easy to see the quality and flavor of these dishes. Service was lovely: all the different kinds of dosas were patiently explained to us, and several of the dishes on the buffet were refreshed, even though it was past closing time. I can't wait to go back--next time I will get there earlier, when everything is fresh and just out of the kitchen. And it's vegetarian!

The grocery next store was interesting, but maybe I'm a little spoiled since there's a Patel Bros. store 15 minutes away from me, and it's a little more comprehensive.

Vday dinner for 6 in Amherst/Buffalo/Niagara

Because it's a little pricey, I agree that Lombardo's qualifies as a special occasion restaurant. But is it ever good! I'm from NYC, but visit Buffalo on a regular basis, and make sure to eat there every time. To me, it compares favorably with the best Italian restaurants in NYC.

what to do with radishes??

I love this radish-egg salad recipe, and make it often when my CSA box overflows with radishes. Slice radishes, add to chopped hard-boiled eggs, along with plenty of chopped parsley and a mustardy vinaigrette dressing. Very interesting twist on egg salad.

Potato, sausage and arugula salad. It's substantial enough to be a meal.

Vichyssoise is always nice, too.

Storage containers

Does anyone know where I can buy either Cambro or Rubbermaid commercial-quality storage containers large enough to store dry goods like flour and sugar? My ancient (35+ years old) Tupperware containers are beginning to crack. Queens/Long island area preferred.

risotto ideas

My absolute favorite is Ina Garten's butternut squash risotto. You can find it here:

Tortilla Soup Recipe

This one is rather different from the typical brothy tortilla soups, and it meets all your specifications. It's an adaptation of the tortilla soup from Coyote Cafe in Santa Fe. My SO says it's orgastic.

2 cups tomatillos, cut up
2 cups mashed tomatoes (I use Pomi chopped tomatoes)
1 large onion, diced
3 cups fresh tomatoes, cut up

--Add to sauteed vegetables in stockpot and saute 2 minutes. Then add:

7 cups water

--Add water and bring to a boil. Add tortilla chips, let soften, and puree with a submersible blender. Add salt and a bit of sugar to taste.

To serve, slice some fresh tortillas and fry until crispy. Sprinkle on top of bowls of soup, and if desired, garnish with sour cream or queso fresco, and avocado.

Saffron, Howard Beach

Has anyone been to this restaurant? I heard about this new Spanish restaurant, but have not seen any reviews. Thanks.

cholent

Boy, was I surprised to see this post revived!

The smoked turkey leg sounds like just the ticket for a great cholent. As soon as I find one, I will cook up a mess of cholent and report back on it. Thank you!

We need WEGMAN'S!!! (And how does it compare to Fairway?)

As much as I love Fairway, I'd give it up in a second if Wegman's came to NYC.

Last time I was in the Wegman's on Rt.9 near Manalapan NJ I asked the manager why they can't come to NYC. He claimed it was a question of space, that they can't find spaces with enough square footage in the city. I can count off at least a dozen Home Depots, Costcos, and other big box stores within 20 minutes of NE Queens. Surely Wegman's doesn't need more space than those stores.

What to do With a Watermelon Radish/Turnip

Peel it, slice it, and eat it raw. It's delicious and beautiful, too.

Self Checkout at Costco.

If I check myself out, I expect a discount. After all, part of the price of the products I buy goes to salaries of the people who work at the store. Why should I pay that extra if I'm doing the work myself?

Seriously, I have not found any advantage to the self checkout at my local supermarket. The lines are slower, people don't know what they're doing, and everyone is frustrated by the lack of help when things don't work right. Besides, in today's economy, I want to see more people working, not less.
