Yes, 20 bags! I was shocked too. I was told that the price of the rice was going up each day! It went from $28/ bag to $30. Then a week later, it jumped to $45. Now we are at $50 a bag. I think people are starting to panic and buying all the rice they can get their hands on, and the stores are just raising prices because of so much demand and no supply! |

I was reading about the rice crisis in China, Phillipines, and other asian countries. Then I go to my Asian grocery store and all the rice are sold out! All the 50 lbs bags are gone and the price went all the way up to $50 a bag! Almost double the price from when we bought it in the beginning of the year. We are in Northern CA. A lot of the people that I know are starting to hoard the rice. They are going out of the city and buying 20 to 30 bags of rice, because they are afraid of the price of rice going out, and worst, not enough rice to go around. Rice is a very important part of the meal for Asians. When we hear that there is no rice available, we will start to worry or panic. Is this happening anywhere else? |

What to Order at Bakesale Betty's This is so wierd. I was just at Bakesale Betty's and I had the Fried Chicken salad, and strawberry shortcake. Betty also passed out a pecan shortbread when we in line. The chicken salad was only ok. I like the sandwich more. There was way too much parsley in the salad, it was overwhelming, and the chicken was very tasty as well, so when I had it together, it was just way too much taste... I think the with the sandwich, the cabbage and the pasrley is not powerful. Now, the pecan shortbread was just heavenly. It was so good. Now, I wish I had gotten more of that!! A lot of pecan and GOOD! As to the menu, I just know what to get when I read the comments, otherwise I would be hopelessly lost. |

My co-workers and I went to lunch at Bagan today. There was only 1 other table there at 12:30... Tea leaf salad – Fermented tea leaves, with peanuts, pine nuts, sesame seeds, and grinded dried shrimp with a squirt of lemon. It was brought to our table, and they mixed it for us. Very flavorful, tangy, tasted similar to a Caesar salad but more peppery and briny. It was very good. The service was excellent because we had someone that was allergic to peanuts, and they brought out another salad without peanuts, as a comp. Samosa soup – Very good. Full of spices, and just warms up the body. Be careful, they have whole dried red pepper in it. It was full of potato, falafel, and some veggies. It was very good. Samusas – sort of similar to the soup, except it was deep fried. It was full of potatoes…. Chicken with mango – Good and flavorful. It had really great wok-breath. It was stir fried with sweet caramelized onions and mango. The sauce was a dark soy based sauce. Mango was sweet and savory. Good. Chicken was really tender and moist. Can’t remember if it was chicken breast or thighs. The lunch serving was really enough for one. Came with a big serving of rice and some sliced mango. Fiery beef – the beef was thickly sliced, and not really that spicy. It was stir fried with green beans & pressed tofu strips. The sauce was a little salty, but other wise good. It had great wok- breath too. Lemonade with Ginger – really good. The ginger wasn’t over powering and not too sweet. Portions weren’t big. Each dish was averaged $9. |

If you are in Oakland Chinatown, Saint Anna's have a very good fried pork chop. It's better than a lot of places in Chinatown. 326 8th St They have the regular fried chop with a tomatoey sauce, or my favorite, the fried pork chop with onions in a sauce similiar to oyster sauce, which they also give you the tomatoey sauce too. You can choose to have it over rice or sphagetti. Also, they have lunch specials, where you can get the porkchop, borscht, and coffee or milk tea. It was like $6.95 or something. |

Where to find the best soup dumplings in Chinatown? Thanks a lot! I will go try it and report back! |

I agree that Delicious Food Co. is better too. Tao Yuen is really greasy. I ordered the Har Gow and Siu mai and the sui mai tasted like I was eating a lot of fat. It mad emy stomach queasy. DFC is not as greasy and when I go in the morning for breakfast, it's really fresh. I like to get their dried shrimp rice rolls, with 1 har gow, and 1 siu mai. That makes my complete breakfast. Or it will be the pork porridge. With fresh sweet soy milk every time! |

Where to find the best soup dumplings in Chinatown? The chives were in the dumpling itself. It sort of looked like it could be wontons, but it had a lot of greens inside. I think the dumplings were in soup. It looked REALLY good that morning when the sun didn't come out yet! |

Where to find the best soup dumplings in Chinatown? I'm really interested in Shanghai Restaurant. The funny thing is I was at the Oakland StreetFest, and in a booth, I saw them eating some good dumplings. I went and asked them and they said they got it from Shanghai Restaurant. But because of the language barrier, I couldn't understand what they ordered. It look like dumplings with a lot of green chives(?) in it, with soup..... |

Hi! I am new to this board. I am just curious to know what happened to Yoshinoya in down town San Francisco. I remember going there for lunch and it was cheap and GOOD. I am trying to look up the info for the restaurant, but nothing seems to show up. Is the restaurant still there? If not, is there any other place close by? I really want to satisfy my craving for the beef bowl with the red ginger.... Thanks! |
