WEEKDAY BRUNCH IDEA IN SHERMAN OAKS/STUDIO CITY/BURBANK...
Bistro garden sounded a tad too fancy.
We ended up at Chez Nous but were sorely disappointed in the eggs Benedict--- instead of a tasted English muffin, the base was a sweet croissant. Yech. Why?
Still searching for a good eggs benedict and weekday availability would be awesome.
WEEKDAY BRUNCH IDEA IN SHERMAN OAKS/STUDIO CITY/BURBANK...
Help -- need idea for a weekday brunch (i.e. breakfast with a Bloody Mary option).
Thanks.
breakfast near union square
I love Cafe de la Presse. Had breakfast this past weekend with the parents and all of us were quite pleased -- both with the food and the service.
Janes Krazy Salt in east bay?
I have found it several times at the new Berkeley Bowl.
I love the stuff and put it on everything -- popcorn, eggs, butter on a rice cake. Any other suggestions?
please help me find good grub near union square
I have been living at one of the Union Sq. hotels for six weeks (am mid-way through a work assignment).
If you don't mind walking to the Westfield Mall there are a ton of great take-out food options in the basement as well as a great Bristol Farms. But, sometimes after a long day getting there feels like a trek through the crowd.
I had take-out once from Piraat Pizza & Rotisserie -- thinking about it now I realize I need to go back -- the chicken was delicious! Pizza didn't look so great. But that chicken, oh, man.
I've tried Cafe Mason and that was decent, not thrilling; Daily Grill is an option, but expensive; I've only been to one of the Lori's Diners around and it was just okay.
Wish I could be of more help. I will keep checking to see if you've had better luck.
Itzak Hagadol in Encino?
Anyone know anything about this place which is 'coming soon' on Ventura?
I wonder if it is related to the locations in Israel?
Will it be kosher?
Fee Bros. and Regan's Orange Bitters
Go to Wine & Liquor Depot in Van Nuys -- it's on Saticoy just west of Balboa.

I bought Fee Bros. bitters a couple weeks ago. Not orange, but I remember having to decide which one to get, so I bet you could find it there.
In any case, it's a great huge liquor store. Good selection of single malt scotches, too.
COFFEE CREAMER Replacement
I love Mocha Mix. I buy it buy the quart. It has a long shelf life and seems closest to the real thing. I would walk to my fridge now and look at the ingredients, but I am at work and they only have the bad stuff here.
Anyone know if Mocha Mix is as artificial as the others?
Is there really no good biscotti in LA?
I second Semifreddi's found at Peets. Chockful of almonds and crisp. Plain or dipped in Scharffenberger chocolate. Can't be beat.
They are made for dipping. Hold up very well to a good cup of coffee.
Leap Year Freebies/Specials?
Has anyone come across any special promotions for leap year?
I did a quick search and it looks like Chipotle might have something.
And Morton's Steakhouse I think has a free dinner for leap year birthdays.

Baked goods at Peets
In Los Angeles, I believe the baked goods are from La Brea Bakery. I'm sure someone can confirm this. The only miss I had was the other day when I tried to be relatively healthy and ordered to 'low fat' berry scone. It was inedible, but it was my fault.
I would have stuck with my favorite, the dried fruit and nut scone but they were out of them.
Thai in West LA
Silk Thai on Santa Monica Blvd just west of Wilshire in Bev Hills.
Very good. Nice atmosphere, small place with great service but still the good prices Thai food lovers are accustomed too. Don't be skeptical because of its locale. I was skeptical when my parents took me there after they had been going there for a long time. But I was pleasantly surprised.
Check their website though -- I sort of recall they are closed on Sundays... I think they do mostly a weekday / office lunchtime business.
I liked it so much that I might suggest it for my birthday dinner next week -- rather than trotting the folks out to somewhere new, it's just easier to suggest a place I know they like. Know what I mean?
Oysters from 99 Ranch -- Am I a Wimp?
I think you should try them, Bob. And then let us know how it works out. ;)
It could be a great discovery. Good luck!
Small Coffee place in Van Nuys/Encino?
I stopped at Coffee Roasters this morning. But it's too far out of my way.
I'm coming from White Oak & Ventura and end up at Kester & Oxnard.
Benes Bakery might work I pass by every morning but I usually make the light and just keep driving right past because I always forget about them. But wow, if I feel like a pastry too, what a selection!
I wonder if a cute little place would survive in the heart of Van Nuys, in the midst of taco and Vietnamese joints... any thoughts? Are there enough 'yuppies' out there to support a local place?
Small Coffee place in Van Nuys/Encino?
I will give them a try tomorrow.
I love trying new places for scones. It's tough work, but somebody has to do it. :)
Small Coffee place in Van Nuys/Encino?
Am searching for a good latte I can pick up in the morning on the way to work -- somewhere between Encino and Van Nuys.
Starbucks are always too crowded. Peets would be great, but they are a mile in the wrong direction. I don't like Coffee Bean.
Is there a mom & pop type of place -- a la Caffe Latte on Wilshire/Crescent Hts -- in this area?
Coral Tree does the trick, but I was looking for another option.
I stopped at Corner Bakery this morning to give them a chance and was disappointed.
Maybe there is no need for small unique place like that...
Thanks.
scrumptious under $10 -- in/around Providence
Byblos? I think that's the name of the much better falafel place.
Decaf please...(wahhhh!) [moved from Not About Food board]
I think Peets does the best decaf. And there are choices. My favorite is the Decaf Sumatra.
You can order online if there isn't one near you.
I found that Dunkin' Donuts decaf is worthless.
fantastic fennel/kale/corn salad
What is CSA?
And wondering if you used a mandolin. I was thinking of buying one but wondered how often it would get used...
Mayor's Own Marinara (RI) - still available?
Venda Ravioli on Federal Hill (Atwells Ave) always seems to have it...
best pareve biscotti
I believe Semifreddi's are pareve, and I KNOW they are the best.
Semifreddi's is based in the Bay Area of CA and they are also sold at Peets coffee stores.
Good luck!
Anything I should add or change?
Just from the box. The yellows seem to be softer than the black, but maybe if you only have black ones they should be plumped first.
Best bagels in the SFV?
Isn't Manhattan Bagel close to I & Joy? I like them and won't bother with the carbs if Western is the only option.
Whenever I am anywhere near downtown though, I always stop at Brooklyn Bagel on Beverly and Alvarado. And I think they are open 24 hours. Plus the original Tommy's is near that corner too, so it's a two-fer treat.
What to eat with cottage cheese?
Fritos on the side. Original Fritos. The salt and the crunch are a great compliment to the cottage cheese (small curd, of course).
Ice Milk
My grandparents always had a container of ice milk in their freezer, in the late 60s/early 70's. It was never very satisfying.
But I loved the Neopolitan ice cream from Thrifty's they would buy. Is that still a flavor option?
Airline Food in First Class --
BTW, when I flew (coach) on El Al to Israel they let us use real utensils, not plastic on board.
I suppose they do such a great job screening that once we were all on board, no one was worried that a nut job could have sneaked through security. That was quite reassuring.
Airline Food in First Class --
The warm nuts sound great.
Can I also count on a warm towel upon boarding?
On a related chowhound-ish topic -- can we generalize that sushi restaurants that don't give warm towels when seated are not as good as those who do, or is that a my perception?
And how wonderful would life be if someone came around to our cubicle in the afternoon and handed us a warm towel?
