Cook goes off the list: TOO LOUD

Sadly the new Audubon seems to have succumbed to this trend. The music is turned up just enough so you have to raise your voice a bit above normal. A roomful of people doing this is grating. (And FWIW the times I've been the music is very Big Chill. You feel like you're in a PBS fundraiser.)

The old Audubon managed to play varied interesting music and kept it low enough that even when the place was crowded you didn't have to shout.

Gaslight wins though on excessive noise. Literally made our ears hurt.

Love this place. Their salad with grilled chicken has to one of the best deals in the city. With a dogfish head on tap it's a great meal. My only minor gripe is I wish they'd switch things up a bit more and have some new specials every so often. But what they do, they do well. And the acoustics are remarkably good, even when crowded.

Does anyone know what's happening with Cafe Brazil in Allston?

What a huge loss if they're gone for good. I hope someone decides to take over the business and leave it as is. Thinking back on how many great meals i've had there is making me crave a plate of fejiao tropeiro and a Xingu.

Westborough Korean Restaurant

Ate here last night and loved it. Dolsot bibimbap was especially great, given the cold weather. Dumpling soup and squid tempura apps also very good, although we would not have ordered if we realized how much food comes with the bibimbap (all the panchan, and miso soup). Total for two people was $27. I'm looking forward to going back and trying the jap chae, spicy rice cakes, and several other dishes. We got there early, so no waiting, but the place filled right up.

Cafe Brazil. Good, plentiful Brazilian comfort food. On weekends they often have a musician, which adds to the vibe. Only caveat is: if by 'nice' you mean 'upscale' it might not fit the bill.

Johnnie's Brookline (now closed) used to sell it for 69 cents/bottle. Their other stores might have same price.

Globe reports Whole Foods looking to buy chunk of Johnnie's Foodmaster stores

Totally agree JF is a great asset to the neighborhood. And their prices are reasonable. I wish they baked bread in the store the way they did when they first opened. Beacon Market predates me but I do remember the WholeFoods wannabe that preceded Johnnies. It was awful.

2 burritos and a side of fried plantains at El Pelon. This is a great time of year to eat at their outdoor tables (in the Fenway): cooler end of summer before the students return en masse.

Ethnic and Cultural Festivals Summer/Fall 2012

The Fisherman's Feast does the Flight of the Angel. They hoist a girl dressed as an angel out on a line; she flies over the crowd in the streets and gets lowered to the saint where she says some kind of invocation in Italian. It's kind of a hoot. I'm actually surprised the city allows it; seems like a huge safety risk.

Your worst Boston area restaurant experience

Wonder Bread at Cafe Brazil? In my experience they've always served a pretty standard semolina type bread, one that pairs well with the pepper/garlic oil they leave at every table. Sweet Cheeks is the only place I know of that serves actual Wonder Bread.

Finally got to try BT's in Sturbridge. Thank you chowhound. It totally lived up to the hype. Only disappointment was no burnt ends, but I guess they don't always have them so that's forgiveable.

Who makes the best french fries in Boston?

Was there in April and I thought the fries were outstanding. Sad that rents in Boston prohibit that kind of small place. I also like that they have a few well-chosen varieties of beer, as opposed to this weird trend of having hundreds of beers on tap (and they cannot be keeping all those lines as clean as they should).

Granary Tavern opened last week. Anyone been? Seems like a cool space but the owners' other places (eg Jose McIntyre's, Clery's) do not inspire confidence.

Hidden gem - water, pond or lake view restaurant, fun or festive feeling? Help!

If you're up for a burger shack place that feels like it's in your neighbor's house, Dudley Chateau in Wayland, on Dudley Pond. Definitely not a foodie destination, but i think it meets your reqs of fun with water view.

Help, Need to find a Julia Child throwback!

You could try the Taj Hotel (the old Ritz). Looks like the Cafe is now Indian, but they still have a more traditional French Room. (I knew of an older woman who used to eat at the old Ritz cafe and who sounded just like your mother in law.) Or Clio at the Eliot. Hotel chefs can be amazingly accommodating as they tend to be used to fulfilling the off-menu wishes of more demanding/difficult guests. If you call ahead and explain the situation you might find one who is more than willing to show off his/her classical French training.

Where to eat lunch in downtown Boston?

I love this place. Stopped by one Saturday, really famished. They looked busy, but no customers, just lots of activity. I tried to order but the owner said he was sorry, but they couldn't sell me anything, as the store was technically closed. They were in there working on a big catering job. I told him how disappointed I was. He said they made too much food for the catering job so he gave me a huge container filled with all kinds of tasty, meaty morsels (and a bunch of the sides). Refused to take any money and said he hoped I enjoyed it. I sure did.

Downtown Crossing Area at Night?

There's also Scholar's, right near the vacated Border's building. Open until 2AM every day, which is unusual for Boston. Judging from the menu (i've never eaten there) it looks maybe a notch above Barracuda foodwise. Owners seem to be repositioning it more as a nightclub.

Those Hanks stories are pretty funny. Or scary.

Downtown Crossing Area at Night?

Barracuda Tavern. Very easy to miss/overlook, it's a second floor place that used to be a dive bar with an entry in the alley near Marliave.

They have decent pub food and a good selection of beer. I'm surprised it's not mentioned more here, it seems like a chow-ish place.
