5/15/12 Rosa Mexicano Report
Apparently some people have no reaction at all, and some people have a violent reaction that can come on quite suddenly, even ingesting small amounts.
I'm surprised it's legal in MA. They should at least have to label it consistently, and with a warning, like most places do for raw or undercooked foods. Calling it 'white tuna' or 'butterfish' is really misleading.
BOSTON'S WATERFRONT
I've heard nothing but raves about that place, here and elsewhere. I hope their word-of-mouth success prompts them to open nights/weekends.
BOSTON'S WATERFRONT
I assume the Barking Crab must have resolved the sewage issues, but that was one level of ick I don't think I can shake (as unfair/irrational as it might be). Used to be a decent place to bring visitors but now i'm still reluctant.
BOSTON'S WATERFRONT
Very sad that the waterfront and most of the convention area seems to have mostly big-box restaurants. Ate at Smith & Wollensky for the first time and it was basically Longhorn with a better wine list. Big TV just blurs the distinction further.
I wish Boston could open places like Portland's Duckfat, but maybe such small volume can't sustain our rents. Maybe some of the food trucks will park down there to provide some variety.
Any info on Happy’s Bar & Kitchen
Wow thanks for the report. Definitely does not sound promising.
I would like to tell you about the food at Orinoco (Brookline)
Often places with that policy will seat you if you have 3 out of 4 present. Less likely to affect revenue if you get seated while waiting for that last person as opposed to one person holding an empty table for 8.
Orinoco's the kind of place i want to love. It's just never been worth the wait. Really cramped too if you're seated against the wall. Food's ok. I'd go back but am in no rush.
bars with outdoor patio area - for a bachelorette party
Last time I inquired Audubon wouldn't let you reserve patio when there are games at Fenway, which would rule out this weekend (not to mention parking will be a nightmare).
Deep Ellum has decent patio out back.
Need North End Restaurant for visiting parents and awful toddler
I'd give Benevento's a try; it's a pizza place that serves other standard Italian fare. Dependable, flavorful food in my experience, and it tends to be a little off-the-radar, which will work in your favor on a holiday weekend. They used to have an outdoor space too.
Anyone Been to Geoffrey's Cafe's Recently?
I agree with MC Slim JB and give it a solid 'okay'. The menu seems a little diffuse now; i don't remember the south end one ever offering pizza. And they seem to have dropped the roasted chicken salad, which is too bad, as I don't know any place else that serves something similar. The space is also cavernous compared to Tremont St. I miss the funky crowdedness of the original.
Boston Area Barbecue Restaurants
Jenny, what is the ideal brisket? Haven't had Lester's, but the Sweet Cheeks version was gag-inducingly fatty. I should have been more careful before eating I guess. They might have been rushing out the meat to keep up with demand. My preference is to have the fat cap and other line of fat removed before serving, but is that the standard?
(Off-topic, would you happen to know the lyrics to your eponymous song?)
Boston Area Barbecue Restaurants
Soulfire has been most consistenly good in my opinion. Been to Sweet Cheeks twice and the negatives outweigh the positives. I respect Tiffani for avoiding factory-farmed animals, and i like the idea of taking some creative license with traditional barbecue. But to me the flavors just aren't there. I guess the Wonder Bread (yes) is ironic but really brings down the experience of the food if you actually eat it. Jelly jars are sort of fun, but not when you charge customers standard pint prices for 12 oz. of beer. Soulfire, OTOH, is pretty straightforward/traditional, and has always been memorably tasty. I agree the mega TV can be offputting though.
Has anyone had M&M Ribs? I know it's a truck, not a restaurant, but I'm curious how the food is.
Let’s make a list of obnoxiously loud restos
Gaslight. Food is good, but noise level ranges from just plain loud to painfully deafening.
Are my picks okay?
for lunch you might want to try Casa Razdora, downtown in the financial district. I've heard nothing but raves.
What is the superlative taco and where to find it in the Boston area?
I also had a very bad experience at La Verdad; still scratching my head as to how Bon Appetit gave them a 'best Mexican food in America' award. My vote is split between Dorado and El Pelon, even though the latter almost killed me with their extra hot sauce. (I didn't know they had two strengths of hot sauce.) Was so good I'm tempted to subject myself to it again.
Going out tonight. Looking near Back Bay around Newbury St. Help!
What was the union dispute going on with Max Brenner's? There were picketers all while it was being set up.
April 2012 Openings & Closings
Is that a buffet-style place where they leave it out, like Minado in Natick? Those can be iffy as you never know how long it's been sitting there (and you get hoverers/hoarders of some stuff).
I'm amazed that Ginza does AYCE sushi that they make fresh for you.
Gastropubs/bars for foodies on the North Shore?
I've heard great things about 9 Elm in Danvers. Never eaten there though.
sichuan gourmet, framingham. vegetarian options?
Not sure about the Framingham one, but the Brookline SG will do a vegetarian dan dan noodle.
So-Gross-They're-Good Faves
Haymarket Pizza. I can't believe the city hasn't shut them down, but I do love their pizza.
Szechuan Peppercorns- Who piles them on?
Sichuan Gourmet has a generous amount of the peppercorns in Jiang La Fish Filet and Gan Guo Beef.
I'm never sure what to do with the dried red chilies; do people eat these? I like the heat and smoky flavor they impart but eating them can be unpleasant due to the texture. They're often too numerous to pick out though.
February 2012 Openings and Closings
Swish Shabu opens in the Fenway (Peterborough Street row) on Monday.
January 2012 Openings and Closings
anyone know what's going in to the Finale space in Coolidge Corner?
Diner rec for Quebec visitor
City Table -- the Lenox hotel restaurant -- is very underrated IMO. I've been there a few times and the food and service was quite good. Definitely a few notches above most hotel restaurants.
Peterborough St restaurants returning in June, plus Speed's!
Has the Fenway Rod Dee opened yet? It was closed today (possibly for the MLK holiday) but it looks ready for business.
Great to have El Pelon back. It was so packed around 1 PM that people were eating burritos at the outdoor picnic tables in the sub-freezing weather.
There's still a storefront available, so maybe Speed's can be convinced.
Best of Brookline - 2011 Edition
Dante has great pizza. Switched to them after the labor issues with Upper Crust, and I'll probably never go back.
Casual, affordable, vegetarian friendly
Most Indian places are a good bet for a variety of vegetarian options; I'm partial to India Quality in Kenmore.
Where to go for breakfast in Boston - Brookline area other than Zaftigs
I've found Audubon's brunch to be very good, and surprisingly it never seems to be crowded. Never a Zaftigs-length wait.
Which place charged for syrup? That's pretty cheeky.
I've heard good things about Brookline Family Restaurant's breakfast/brunch, but i've only had their Turkish dinner menu.
Casual, affordable, vegetarian friendly
Aren't Dan Dan noodles topped with pork? Do they offer a vegetarian version?
Clover in Harvard Square (or various food trucks) would fit your requirements.
Help! ideas for Romantic Restaurant in Boston
I'd say South End Buttery, but make sure to get a corner table downstairs. It can get a little noisy if crowded though.
