Hip/Happening Late Night Dining in LA

Hi,

Foody stopping over in LA for the night. I will be flying in with my girlfriend and we were looking for a good place to stop by and eat.

The catch is we don't get in till about 11PM, so we need a place that is open late. We wanted something trendy that serves some good food. I'll be staying near the airport, but willing to drive to Beverly Hills or wherever I need to go.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Thanks,

Anyone been to Raw Canvas?

So this might not be the board to post this ....BUT .... it might be

So I've read reviews on this place before and after reading about a review in the Vancouver Sun a few days ago I decided to finally try it out. And boy am I glad I did! This place is like a main street/commercial drive gem hidden in the heart of Yaletown

For those that haven't heard of this place .....it's a wine bar (with a good selection of beers too) ...tapas' place and an art studio ....yes an Art Studio!!

The place doesn't have it's own full kitchen so a lot of their foods are sourced from Nuba (awesome place) so don't go there expecting fancy resto food. It has a solid menu with good sharing foods! But the thing that makes it outstanding is their wine list ....all very reasonably priced and this place has an awesome vibe.

I thought I'd just post here and ask if anyone's checked it out! They recently had something on Groupon that I completly missed out on ...but ohh wells!

South Beach Recommendations

great!! Thanks for the tips on the Cuban restos ....I'll probs try one of them tonight.
As for the Chinese/Japanese ...I'll save that back for Vancouver! thanks again

South Beach Recommendations

Hey CH Miami ......Food lover from Vancouver visiting Miami for a couple of weeks!
I'll be staying in South Beach
Looking for some good food here to try. I'm not looking for any high class fancy restos unless they are a must try ....(i'm thinking Joe's). But anything else I'm looking for good food for a decent value that locals go to.

Specifically, some things I'm looking for are:
- Cuban
- Mexican
- Chinese (dim sum or standard fare)
- Japanese (I've tried Nobu and Samba before)
- And which patio would you suggest as the best place to hang for a few drinks and just people watch

Thanks Miami CH!

WHERE TO BUY SOFT SHELL CRAB - VANCOUVER

i tried T&T but couldn't find any . . .i'll call fujiya! thanks!

WHERE TO BUY SOFT SHELL CRAB - VANCOUVER

Looking to try making soft shell crab at home!

anyone know where I can pick up some?

Southern Style Fried Chicken in Calgary

man.... if they only had Popeye's or Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles here

Piegon or Squab in Western Canadian Restaurants?

Well here is another one yimster ..... I personally think Sun Sui Wah has gone down a notch with their squab..... once regarded as the best place to have it in all of Vancouver. But I'm going to have to tell you to try Koon Bo. 41st and Faser .... hands down the best Squab in my opinion.... the skin is crunchy and the meat is super juicy.

The place is always packed and everyone always has a plate of squab. So give it a try!

Best Authentic Thai & Chinese in Calgary

In terms of authentic Chinese food I would really have to say Forbidden City is my tops for dinner. Their food is done very well .... and being the new age Chinese restaurants their menu is in full picture and colours so for anyone that doesn't fully know what they are ordering it comes in handy.

I haven't been to Silver Dragon in ages but I really was never a fan of it .... like some previous posts, you'll notice a big chunk of the resto isn't asian people which usually means it's a bit more catered for westerners.

Dim Sum at T-Pot is very good too. I don't think they have XLB (they might) .... but I know forbidden city has a good XLB too. Dinner at T-Pot is fairly good too .... do try their 'fried' chicken. It's one of their signature dishes and it's awesome!

Sun Chui Kee is good for HK style 'casual' dishes like fried rice, veggies and stuff like that

Calgary Court is good for HK style cafe's ..... almost like a fast food place, but chinese food. Their cold milk tea's are one of the better ones in the city.

You have to remember that one company owns all these restaurants, they also own a few restaurants in HK and 2 in Vancouver? I believe they have done well for their name ..... they constantly use fresh ingredients and they are very comparable to restaurants out here in vancouver.

hope this helps

favorite dimsum items calgary

ohh yes . . and i think the T-pot dim sum menu actually says "caution hot soup inside"

favorite dimsum items calgary

it's not gushing i can tell you that
but there is a fair bit of soup in them

Green Island on 64 Ave NW?

I havent' gone for supper. But tried their dim sum a few months ago.
The dim sum was decent . . .but they used way too much msg
you can bascially taste the msg in each piece and the aftermath of you having to chug litres of water prove that they did.

Best Chinese BBQ house ALTA

if you want good bbq duck . . . i think Sun's on Center St and near 16th Ave N does it well. The skin is very crispy and the rest of their bbq is decent

ALPHA SUSHI

and you can't go wrong with pitcher beer speicals on sunday and thursdays!
i find the food very good . . . but much pricer then somewhere like Guu

Best chinese resturants in Edmonton

I guess a question to ask is .... what are ppl's final consensus with the best chinese restaurant in Edmonton? I live 1/2 the time in Calgary and 1/2 in Vancouver . . . i venture up to edmonton every so often and I fully struggle with finding a 'good' chinese restaurant in Edmonton.
I've tried a lot of them but to me the really haven't been up to par. Yes, obviously it will be near impossible to match the Vancouver quality. But to a point you would expect the quality to be similar to Calgary. But I still find a big difference between the 2 cities .... I would glady bring HK visitors to somewhere like Forbidden City or T-Pot in Calgary...
but I'm not sure where I would bring them anywhere for Chinese in Edmonton..

For now, I think Cha for Tea is okay...
but past that is there any other suggestions on what place I should try?

Xiaolongbao aka Soup Dumplings in Calgary

Forbidden City I think makes the best XLB in Calgary.
I can't rank it in there with the ranks of Vancouver . .. but in terms of the juice, thickness of the skin and the meat inside. I think Forbidden City is the one to go to

Greek restaurant in Calgary

It's funny because I would NEVER have assumed there would be decent greek food in a strip mall in the deep South. But, I have been there and i absolutly loves Plaka.
They have these lunch specials where you get a slouvaki (chicken, gyros or lamb) with a very delicious salad for about $10. Been there for supper once and found the food to be good also but a bit more expensive.

I usually just go there for lunch.

1st Time In Halifax this Weekend!

Hey everyone!

I'm from Calgary and I will be in the Halifax area for the first time this week. I'm pretty excited to check out what the local scene has to offer. I will be staying downtown so walking is my preference.

What am I looking for?? Any suggestions won't be overlooked but like most people that go to Halifax I'm looking for Seafood. I don't really need anything fancy but I'm just looking for places for good eats.

I don't mind a stand that sells some killer fish and chips
piers where you can just buy lobsters from vendors where they'll boil it for you on the spot
(kind of like SanFran where do that for crabs) Is there something like that in Halifax?
Or eating some deep fried scallops on a park bench

I will get there on Friday morning and leave on Sunday so any help from fellow chowhounders would help!

Thanks in advance!

Kobe Beef in Tokyo

Hey Tokyo Fourmers!

I will be travelling to Tokyo soon and staying in the Shinjuku area. I'm very interested in trying some Kobe beef. So I have a few questions, first of all ...... where should I go? Looking at the maps of Tokyo it seems very hard to find a specific restaurant if I don't know the area or know the language.

Secondly . . . are there specific cuts I should try or what are the basics I need to know? Is it served raw like sashimi or served like a steak?
and what are the prices that we are looking at?
is it easy to order without knowing any japanese?

I would perfer to NOT go to the best place in all of tokyo, but somewhere I can just try it for a reasonable price. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated!!

THANKS EVERYONE IN ADVANCE!

Ultimate Dim Sum in HK!

anyone???

Veal Bones in Calgary?

I've seen them at T&T on Harvest Hills Blvd.
They have them there pretty often

Just be sure to call them to ask before hand

Shark fin soup in Calgary

many restaurants in Calgary serve it. You don't need to pre-order or anything..... off the top of my head the big restaurants that have it would be: Forbidden City, Central Grand, Regency, T-Pot?
lots of smaller places have it too, but just call to double check

Ultimate Dim Sum in HK!

I think I might try out the Lung King Heen restaurant! The menu looks fantastic

what kind of prices should I assume for dim sum there?

Vancouver Magazine's 101 Local Things to Eat Before You Die

does anyone have a copy of the list on pdf or another link??
I just clicked the link and it seems like it no longer exists!

Thanks!

Ultimate Dim Sum in HK!

good good! ;)

So any suggestions with addresses or directions??

Ultimate Dim Sum in HK!

Hi,

I will be visiting Hong Kong with my girlfriend in a few months. I was looking for some good recommendations for Dim Sum. I don't mind paying the premium for good food, but I would also like some recommendations for places most local people like to eat (good at a reasonable price)

Addresses would help too!

Thanks for your help

Top Notch Chinese Food in the GTA

Okay, it's good to know that LWH and Grand are famous for dim sum, I will definately go there for lunch rather then dinner. It seems like Lai Toh Heen and O'mei are brought up quite often here. Are these more dinner places?? From reading on the sites, i see that LWH and LTH are from the same group..... so does one just specialize more in dinner?

Thanks for all the suggestions out there.... I'm really excited to see what TO has to offer!

Top Notch Chinese Food in the GTA

Hi,

I will be staying near the airport but I will have a car so anywhere in the GTA is okay. I've eaten at many great chinese places in Vancouver and I heard great things about LWH. But I think I will also try Grand

I'm looking for Dim Sum and Supper, any suggestions are welcomed!

Where should I eat? Montreal

I will be in the Montreal area in a few weeks and I'm looking for some places to eat? I know I will definatly hit up Shwartz's. But is there any moderate priced restaurants you would reccomend?

Thanks!
