Finally, something new and good in Palm Springs

After spending the summer out of town my SO and I made our usual trip down the strip to our old favorites. Philippe’s Café is no more and will be missed but our favorite Zin American Bistro was still there and busy. Offering half off the wine and an enticing new Brunch menu (food and endless mimosas for only $21) we ate there and enjoyed everything as usual. The waiter told us they had opened another place just up the street. The charming, European Bistro atmosphere and the patio dining called to us and we went back for an early dinner. The menu was interesting, Italian but not…the real charmers here were the tapas. A great selection of choices under $7 delighted us. From the chorizo stuffed calamari to the egg with artichoke heart and asparagus it was inspired and well executed. Simple wine list featuring wine from Spain and Italy at good prices ($20-$25). A great new find for Palm Springs. Zinicafemed.com

What's Chow-ish in Palm Springs?

FYI Chex Philippe, no longer in biz in Palm Springs. Agree still like Kiyosaku the best for sushi in Palm Springs, always fresh and friendly.

Palm Desert Dinner Party

Stay away from Jackalope, went there a couple weeks ago and had a less than good experience. Ribs were overdone and dry (couldn't even cut them) and the hot appetizers cold. The second course was brought out to the table while our appetizer plates were all still there. When we asked to have the plates cleared first the busser refused and continued just moving them around to make room for the main course. After serving the last entrée he picked up the plates and dropped ALL of them at the end of the table. No apology from any mgr for all the broken dishes and food at our feet! Wine list is so bad we stuck with cocktails! Arnold Palmer's is very good.

Palm Springs-area....romantic or trendy

Romantic with interesting food, Copley's is my fav. Philippe's (French) is also really nice as long as you are relaxed and can sit outside. Johannes has good food with an Austrian flair -ask for a table in the room to the right side of the front door for a romantic table. Zin is another good option, lower $ but better wine list. I like the room to the left of the front door, and ask for a "big " table, it's more of a bistro atmosphere and the tables can be close together when they are busy.

Any REAL Italian food in San Diego?

Palm Springs: ISO place to watch the football games and other cheap good eats

The Beer Hunter is in La Quinta, not Palm Springs, only 30 min drive but if you are looking for football in Palm Springs the options are not great. Peabody's has a great new TV with high def that I enjoy and the Village Pub also has TV and is open for lunch. I do like Fishermans and Shanghi Red's (the bar in the back) but don't know what time they open on Sunday.

Al Dente Restaurant in Palm Springs

Haven't been there lately but the food is ok. There are several other places you might check out including Zin, they have had a $29 prix fixe dinner that was very good thru the summer, 3 courses. Pomme Frite also had an interesting early dinning option,.

My Buenos Aires Restaurant Trip

La Bourgogne got great reviews from friends who just returned as well as Casa Cruz. I was there last yeat and loved Casa Cruz. La Casa de Pappas Fritas had probably the best steak i have ever had in my life and it was under $15. Have fun. Hopefully you can let everyone know how it was, I'm going back this Aug.

Anything new in Palm Springs?

If you are in Palm Springs don't miss Zin for great food and wine. The atmosphere is more casual but the food is way above average esp at the $$. They are also open for lunch and had many of the dinner items available. Johannes is another one of my favorites.

Zin or Blend for a night in the Valley?

I am sure you will enjoy either one. Blend is more expensive and upscale and Zin is more casual but with great food. I like the wine list better at Zin. Wine Spectator award and good $$
congrats and many happy years

NY Chowhounds have one night in Palm Springs!

You have probably already been to Palm Springs but I second the idea of no chains! Try Johannes’s, Zin, Copley’s, Philippe’s, Cuistot, Fusion One 11, or any of the other Chef/Owner operated places. Enjoy......

BEST RESTAURANTS IN PALM SPRINGS

I assume you have already come to Palm Springs but I would like to mention that Blend, Cuistot, Sirocco and Twenty 6 are not in Palm Springs. They are actually about 30-45 minutes east.
In Palm Springs - Norma's is great for breakfast or lunch. So is Philippe's. Spencer’s has an ok lunch although the food in not always consistent, imo.
Matchbox and Zin are two very different restaurants. (they were together so wasn’t sure if there was confusion.) Matchbox is casual food, casual service but has a good bar at night with happy hour food. Zin is casual but much better food and a great wine list. There is word on the street Zin is expanding and might open for lunch so depending on when you come they might be an option as well.
Melvyn’s is 70’s food with 70’s service with a piano lounge at night. Very old school but not a real great dining experience but more of a trip back in time :).
Eat at Hotel Zozo has a decent lunch as well.
Hope you had a good time and this is good for someone!

Palm Springs in August

Open all summer in Palm Springs can be difficult but there are a few great places. Johannes closed on Monday, $$$ fine dining, Zin open every night $$ casual atmosphere, great food and wine, Matchbox, $-$$ casual pizza/american food open every night, Al Dente good Italian $ open every night, Azul $-$$ tapas bar open every night, El Mirasol $$ Mexican, Blue Coyote $$ Southwest with great margaritas. Check out palmspringsrestaurantrow.com for a list of all the restaurants in town.

Palm Springs?

Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to PS. Some other suggestions may be Zin or Johannes for dinner. I don't think Zin has a childrens menu but the fried chicken, burger and mac & cheese are favorites of my neice and nephew. They also gave the kids crayons to 'color on the table' which was a hit. Johannes is more adult but if you have a night out the food is very good. Peabody's is a small local hangout with good american food for breakfast and lunch.

Ca'Dario in Santa Barbara

My husband and I went there with family and all agreed it was better than Olio e Limone the night before. For the extra $$ Olio e Limone just doesn't do anything better.

Bachelorette party in Palm Springs..where to eat? what to do?

Not sure where Caesar Steakhouse is. I'm a local and have never heard of it anywhere in the desert. If you are thinking of the steakhouse where they make Caesar salad tableside it is LG's and it WILL break the bank.
If you want a full bar, Matchbox is reasonably priced and the food is fine. The restaurant at the Viceroy is in my opinion over priced for the quality of the food but does have a nice atmosphere. Azul has a nice bar area and good tapas, although you may have to put a lot of small tables together.
Zin is always good in the $30- range depending on how may courses you have. They only have beer and wine. The wine list is great and a lot of good values.
Copley's is also nice. More $$$ but full bar.
Spencer's is probably on the $$$ side as well and has very limited indoor seating if you are going in the summer. If you are waiting till the fall the outdoor dining is nice there.
Kaiser is a tourist trap IMO

Alma Rosa is Back Where It Belongs

Richard Sanford is indeed one of the pioneers in the region and makes great wine. I have been enjoying his Alma Rosa since it came out and it has the Sanford stamp all over it. Glad to hear he is back at the old site.

One night in Palm Springs - dinner?

If you want the best casual bistro food go to Zin. I am 99% sure they are open 7 nights all summer - a lot of places in PS close 2-3 nights a week. If it is the weekend and you want something more upscale Johannes is very good. Both are downtown very close to the Hyatt - 1 block or less.

PS Zin had half off the wine list last time I was there during the week, great deal!!

ToP 5 Favorite in Palm Springs Area for Lunch or dinner

Fusion One 11 in Palm Desert is a very nice tapas place. I don't know if they are open for lunch. In Palm Springs, Philippe's is my favorite place for lunch. I have the savory crepes and the salads are very good as well.
Blend is a great place for dinner in Old Town La Quinta, probably my favorite in that area. I have heard good things about Firecliff but they wanted us to sit in the back room so we didn't stay, they have a nice piano bar in the front.
If you go to Palm Springs my favorites are Zin, Johanne's and Copley's for dinner.

Which Palm Springs Restaurant?

Blend is in Old Town La Quinta so if you are staying in PS it is about a 25 min drive. I would keep that in mind if you are planning on having wine. The food there is very good, the wine list small but good and the service a little slow but attentive when they are there. Atmosphere is nice as well, nicely placed tables.
I went to Pacifica 2 x in the last month and thought it was ok but not great. The food didn't impress me either for lunch or dinner. Atmosphere is nothing special.
The last reports I have heard about Europa - don't go. It isn't what it used to be. The same with Roy's. Service was very slow, food even slower and not what the menu described and they put us at a table in the middle of the dining room even though we had reservations a month ahead for a booth.
Zin has fantastic food and wine. The last time I was there they gave us a big table for 4 people even though we only had 2 - They said it was toward the end of the night and we looked like we wanted some alone time......everything was perfect. It is more of a Bistro atmosphere, busy, friendly and warm.
La Valluris has good classic French food. If that is what you want it is good but I personally think it is a bit over $$$ and stuffy.
Johannes is another nice option in PS, although on Fridays the Chef may or may not be there. Big tables, no booths very classic, clean new decor.
Happy Anniversary

Any good seafood in Palm Springs area?

I had fabulous soft shell crab at Zin this weekend. They don't specialize in seafood only but they always have a nice selection and everything is so fresh.
