Palm Springs Weekend

sorry we got so few responses as i was let to troll past posts. Cafe Beaux-Artist in Palm Desert that had been recommended by Chowhounders was pretty ordinary. the bartender started off by blending Bombay Safire & regular Bombay to make a martini w/o telling us as she ran out of Safire. My McCallann neat was one of the shortest pours ever. We asked to split the crab cake appetizer, which they did, but was very dry with very little sauce. The Shrimp Crepe was OK as was the the rack of lamb that my wife had. Service was OK.

Palm Springs Weekend

We are going to Palm Springs next weekend for three days. Looking on Chowhound it seems most of the discussions were very old.

Looking for places that won't break the bank, but have interesting food & experience. Will eat almost any cuisine. Want something for breakfast, lunch & dinner.

Thanks

The Wiltern in Koreatown

We are going to see Margaret Cho @ the Wiltern in Koreatown. Any suggestions. We are really not into Korean food. Might consider Koreatown adjacent.

What's up with DC service?

Being the original poster:

1) we were not camping out.

2) I should have used the word intrusive. The wife & I were trying to have conversations when the wait staff would put themselves between us to fill the water or take the plates or the waitress would interrupt our conversation to ask if things were OK

3) At Graffiato the manager did notice that we were not happy & did comp a drink after we expressed our displeasure.

regularly?......when it becomes intrusive....when I still have food on the plate? Every 3-5 minutes is not periodically. Ask me before you take away my plate.

but the service was bad. Yes I've had bad service in LA, but not on consecutive experiences.

What's up with DC service?

Ok, I'm from Los Angeles so you can start ragging on that....

But, have been in DC since Saturday & almost all of our dinning experiences have been not very good. We had brunch at Masa 14, happy hour at District Chophouse, dinner at Oyamel & Graffiato. The food has been OK (Oyamel the best), but service was pretty bad.

In every instance our waiter/waitress hovered. At Masa she she came by every 3-5 minuets to ask if things were OK. I want the wait staff to not ignore me, but if I say things are OK once I don't need to be asked a half dozen times.

What was worse the bus staff kept filling our water after we took a sip or two. They would also come by & take our plates away without asking and a bite or two left (Masa). several times staff would place them selves between my wife & I as we were having a conversation.

Another issue was that they would not bring out my wife 's & my's food out at the same time. In every instance there was a 5-10 minute difference.

Is this the norm in DC?

Sunday Oakland afternoon

Going to the Sunday Stone's concert. We are staying in the Emarcadero area, but will be traveling via BART so can do Oakland 12th or 19th stations or others towards the Coliseum. Something within 1-3 blocks of BART station.

Not looking for over the top foodie experience, will be doing that Saturday night & have nice brunch reservations. Something good, but fairly inexpensive.

Well if the Commis would have a website that does more than list ingredients I might look at them. Been to Oakland, SF, London, Madrid, Paris, Rome, Florence, NYC, LA and Oakland was close to any of those.

Yes staying in Oakland, because want short ride back to hotel after concert. But Saturday evening & Sunday morning can take BART, cable car or bus or cab to get around. Did Jack London Square in February & it seemed fairly dead. We also did the Ferry Building that weekend & liked it. Saturday evening is probably San Francisco. Sunday might be Berkeley.

Wife & I scored tickets for Stones concert in Oakland on Sunday, May 5th. Will be flying into Oakland Saturday afternoon. Looking for nice food experience somewhere in San Francisco or Berkeley for Saturday dinner, Sunday brunch & late afternoon dinner. Won't have a car, but BART & a cab will do. As far as cuisine goes French, Italian, Californian.or Chinese.

Venice -Romantic w/view, BD dinner & Last Meal

Wife & I are going to be in Italy first two weeks of May. Doing basic first trip of Rome, Florence & Venice. We are very minor foodies who will be trying out traditional & modern takes on Italian food & trying to stay away from the tourist trips.

Our last night of the trip will be in Venice & is also my 53rd birthday. We want a dinner with a nice romantic view of the canal or a plaza with good food. We are willing to splurge.

So far it seems Quadri or de Pisis to fit the bill. Any other recommendations or thoughts?

Sevilla
L'Opera
Skyroom
555 East
If we want to do a cab ride either Sir Winstons or Michael's

Upcoming Trip to Washington DC

Thanks so far for all the suggestions, just wish there time enough to get to all of them. One of the reasons I said Silver Spring is that we will both be in conference 1st three days & not sure how much traveling on Metro want to do in evening. But great to know about Wheaton.

Some asked about types of food & price range. We like trying being adventurous, but things like beef tongue or escargot or Haggis ;-) is not our cup of tea. If enough Chowhounders rave about a place we will give it a try. Price range we like to do one slightly expense elegant meal per trip. The rest are mid range or lower. Problem with us is the pre-meal Scotch & meal glass(s) of wine ups the price. Thats one of the reasons we like Happy Hours.

Thanks

Thomas

Upcoming Trip to Washington DC

My wife is going to be attending a three day conference the second week of September. We are going to be there about seven days. The conference is in Silver Springs at the Crowne Plaza so that is where we will be staying. We will not have a car, will use public transportation.

* Looking for good places to eat in Silver Springs, doesn't have to be fancy.
* Good breakfasts in Silver Springs
* The best crab cakes in Silver Springs or Washington DC
* Would like to have a couple of real nice meals in Washington and/or Georgetown.
* What museums have the best cafe or restaurant?
* Good happy hours in Silver Springs/Washington DC and/or Georgetown

Comments on our Trip to Boston

Anthem sounds right. As far as Kingfish, maybe they recommended it because of the chef? The wife & I didn't to PJs either. The only ones in PJs were the wait staff.

Nice places in Quincey

1) we had no wait, were seated right a way. Service was good. Food bad.

2) The size was OVERSIZED for anyone, except for someone wanting a 5000 calorie meal

3) anytime you say that something can be a little flabby you got a problem. The wings were definitely NOT tasty

Comments on our Trip to Boston

Thanks to all who had responded to our original posting of recommendations.

Here is the results of our trip to Boston from LA:

Saturday

We were at Faneuil Hall & Quincey Market when all the families that were in town for graduations or people watching NHL or NBA games were there. He had lunch at a restaurant that we can remember the name, but was across from Salty Dog. Good service & food. Had good lobster roll.

Dinner was not bad, but not great. Went with Chowhound recommendation of Kingfish Hall. Sorry this place is overrated . Wife had the Crispy Lobster which was underwhelming. I had the lobster ravioli, which was OK. The service was great. Our waitress was very fun.

Sunday

We had the Pajama Brunch at 647 Treamont. The food was great. Everything seemed to work. Wife had the Papas Pravas & I had the Crispy prosciutto Benedict.. It was VERY busy, but the service was great.

After a tour of Fenway Park we had dinner at Eastern Standard. OK we had to wait 45 minutes, but you had all the graduates of several universities & the Boston Sox fans. The food was great. Had bone morrow was great. Service, which was overwhelmed was very good & still spot on.

Monday

Had dinner in Quincey (where we were staying). Had dinner at the Fat Cat in Quincey. Sorry, but was worst meal of our trip. My mac &cheese with lobster was a huge bowl of Kraft mac & cheese with a couple pieces of badly cooked lobster. Wife had a so-so bunch of wings.

Tuesday

After visit to JFK Library we went to Cambridge. We had a tapas type meal at the Charles Hotel restaurant, Rialto. We did the bar menu. We did 2 3 plates for $10. Roasted peppers, Chicken liver pate, fried olives, Burrata… olive tapenade, and a two other I can't remember. It all worked. Service was great.

Hope to come back to Boston some day.

Tom & Roberta
