Pocket knife with corkscrew? Not Laguiole or Swiss Army?
Yes! I hadn't seen that one yet, thank you.
It's amazing how few of the hundreds of pocket knives on the market have corkscrews.
Pocket knife with corkscrew? Not Laguiole or Swiss Army?
you think that's funny, you'll LOVE this one:
Pocket knife with corkscrew? Not Laguiole or Swiss Army?
I once had my beloved Laguiole confiscated at jury duty! This was after the whole lecture about not bringing weapons into the courtroom, with me scoffing to myself, "who would be foolish enough to try THAT?" ... just forgot it was in my bag.
Pocket knife with corkscrew? Not Laguiole or Swiss Army?
That is gorgeous! the wood! But I'm looking for something that is a pocket knife also, more like the style of this-

Mystery cazuela / is it safe to cook in?
As long as there is no red glaze on the inside of the vessel, you should be fine. As far as I can think, Le Creuset pieces are all white or buff inside.
Yellow can also be a toxic color... though, really any color should be tested if you have suspicions. In general, ceramics that are fired to a lower temperature, (they 'thunk' rather than 'tink' when you tap them,) or with lots of crazing are riskier. Also, cooking acidic foods is more likely to leech out chemicals. Blah blah blah... basically the lead test kit is the way to go!
Pocket knife with corkscrew? Not Laguiole or Swiss Army?
I'm looking for a gift, and specifically want to get a pocket knife that has a corkscrew. I'd prefer not to get a Laguiole or Swiss Army, only because the giftee already owns these. Case makes a neat Bartender's Pocket Knife... aside from this or buying a cool antique on eBay, does anyone have any favorites?
Where to buy cast iron Lodge 'Hibachi' in Portland?
Thanks guys! Fred Meyer doesn't stock this one, & I was hoping to be able to buy it in person rather than online. When I find it, I'll let everyone know where!
Where to buy cast iron Lodge 'Hibachi' in Portland?
I'm looking for the cast iron Lodge brand Sportsman's Grill in Portland. Has anyone seen them around? Lodge doesn't seem to have a dealer directory, and it's a slightly hard-to-find item. Has anyone seen them in stock anywhere? I want to be ready to pounce once this rain lets up.
Thanks!
iSi Whipped Cream Charger- Weird Taste
Thank you SO much! I had no idea. It tastes really creepy. My garage sale stash came with some of the cream ones too- I'll try that next.
iSi Whipped Cream Charger- Weird Taste
I got an iSi CO2 whipped cream charger today at a garage sale with several boxes of really old co2 cartridges. I cleaned it all well, (it already seemed immaculate,) and put in sugar, vanilla, and fresh cream. Then I charged it.
Well, the whipped cream tastes STRANGE. Kind of fizzy like soda water. Anyone have any experience with this? I tried shaking the canister more, tried letting it rest for an hour, tried letting it warm up a bit at room temperature. Could it be the old co2? This seems strange, but I can't figure it out. Thoughts?
Thanks chowhounders!
What to do with surplus milk?
Brilliant! I remember shaking mason jars for hours as a kid to make butter. I'll bet my Kitchen Aid will do it faster!
What to do with surplus milk?
A local market ordered too much organic whole milk, and is selling it today for $1 a gallon... I bought a couple of gallons to make ricotta and yogurt, and I'm thinking of going back for more. I'm trying to think of some milky projects to take advantage of this opportunity. Ideas?
Thanks in advance!
Origin of term 'Up' ?
OK, I know what it means for a drink to be served 'up', but does anyone know how this term originated? It's a tough question to google because the search terms are so vague.
As you can guess, this debate started over drinks, and I'll look like a real hero next time we go out if I can find the answer. Thanks everyone!
Romantic in PDX that won't break the budget
I really love Tiga on NE Prescott. Before 9pm it is really quiet, candlelit and intimate. After 9, it gets more crowded and lively, but still fun. The highest priced item on the menu is the pork loin medallions with whipped potatoes for $9. Most everything else is $7 or $8, with the low end meal being the $5 bowl of garlicky linguine during happy hour, (5-8pm) On warm nights, the front patio is a nice place to be.
PDX -Inexpensive, local/organic
The Tin Shed, on NE Alberta Street might suit your needs. They have table service, but meet the other criteria. Check them out here- http://www.tinshedgardencafe.com/index.html
BERLIN - CURRY DOGS
If you like the hot dog page, you'll LOVE a documentary called "A Hot Dog Program. http://www.wqed.org/tv/natl/hotdogs/
I feel dorky using words like heartwarming and inspirational, but it is an absolutely fabulous movie! It may sound like a film about dogs might be boring, but it is quick paced and is guaranteed to make you crave dogs.
BERLIN - CURRY DOGS
I've never been to Hallo Berlin, but recognized the name from my obsession with the Holly Eats hot dog page!
Any dog lover will melt for this website:

Best Fresh Dungeness Crab in PDX?
Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for the best place to buy fresh crabs in Portland. Either live or cooked is fine. Any favorites this winter?
thanks!
Scharffen Berger @ Vancouver Grocery Outlet
Milk chocolate, mocha, extra dark (82%), and bittersweet(70%) one ounce bars. 50 cents for the milk chocolate, 69 cents for all others. Darn good deal for bars that are usually about $2.19 a pop.
Philly in PDX
I adore that documentary, and also endorse another WQED, (Pittsburgh) production: A Hot Dog Story. They're charming, hilarious, and mouth watering. I've rented them through Netflix.
Help! Anyone have "White Trash Cooking"?
Hey, thanks everyone!
This recipe was a real favorite of mine several years ago, and it's time to, uh, resurrect it. Ahem.
and, Midnight Snack- how did I not know about the existence of GoogleBooks? My life is changed.
Help! Anyone have "White Trash Cooking"?
I foolishly sold my copy at a garage sale, and need the recipe for the whiskey sauce that goes on top of the Resurrection Cake. I've found the cake recipe online, but no luck with the sauce. Anybody?
Thanks in advance to my boozy savior!

Help Me Make Dinner with Shrimp and White Beans
Just use google, it works like a charm. I did a search for the words: shrimp "white beans" recipe
and google gave me this- http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_32966,00.html

Tequila recs?
Any time I hear "Cabo Wabo" I cringe, remembering the time I watched a hostess pour her entire hostess-gift bottle of the stuff into a blender with a jug of Mr. & Mrs. T's Margarita Mix.
I think she was more of a white zin drinker, and wanted to sweeten it up. Oh well, it was her party!
Ancient Fernet-Branca... Drink or Display?
I like the taste comparison idea. I wonder if the formula is even the same- the label on this bottle makes it sound pretty potent, it reads:
"STIMULANT TO THE APPETITE. Contains alcohol by volume 39%, aloes, cinchona bark, gentian, rhubarb, zedoary, calumba, agaric, galangal, bryonia, calamus, angelica, myrrh, chamomile, and peppermint.
Recommended and used in every country of the world as a bitter and stimulant to the appetite.
Dose for adults: One teaspoon before noon, and evening meals as a bitter stimulant to the appetite only when needed.
CAUTION: An over-dose of Fernet-Branca may produce a laxative effect. No laxative should be taken continuously in order to avoid dependence on drugs and never take a laxative in case of abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or other signs of appendicitis.
