Gainesville, FL--local, inexpensive spots

Pnemiller,

There's some info you may find helpful here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/682220.

For pizza, I'd go with Satchel's or Blue Highway.
Burrito brothers is a Gainesville classic and it fits your criteria.

Jacksonville Fish Camps - Which one is best?

I've always loved Clark's Fish Camp, but I haven't been to the others you mentioned. We also love Saltwater Cowboy's in St. Augustine, not too far away from Jax.

babbo or convivio for birthday dinner?

I'm so glad you asked this question! I'm having the same debate for a weekend dinner in October. Although, I've added Scarpetta to the dilemma - Scarpetta vs Babbo vs Convivio. Never been to any of them and it's our first trip to NYC in...well, ever, really.

chinese takeout/delivery

I'll be in SF over the weekend, staying at a hotel in Union Square. Any recommendations on great takeout (chinese, perhaps?)? I'm looking for an alternative to room service when I arrive late on Friday night.

in dc for a week - what restaurant gems do you recommend?

These all sound like great suggestions. I'll post where I ended up going once I get back. Trying to get out today, but TS Fay is keeping me grounded for now.

in dc for a week - what restaurant gems do you recommend?

I'll be in DC for a week, staying downtown near Pennsylvania Ave. I'm looking for some good restaurants to try that are relatively reasonably priced, say, less than $40 or so per person for dinner. I have reservations at Oyamel but not sure where else to look. I won't have a car, so I'll have to get their by walking or metro/taxi.

Any recommendations? I'm not into Thai or Indian cuisine, but I'm up for anything else.

Anything Good in Gainesville?

I would echo the above sentiments. Paramount Grill is one of my favorites - I've never been disappointed. Also, having recently developed a taste for sushi, Dragonfly is fantastic for both sushi-lovers and those opposed to raw fish. Plenty of cooked items on the menu. Have fun!

need help with foil packet cooking

I was skeptical of using the large foil pan, but it sure would be easy if it worked. I wasn't sure if anyone had tried a similar recipe with one of these pans. I'll probably try your oven-method as I'm hesitant to try this on a flaming-hot charcoal grill.

need help with foil packet cooking

I have a recipe for a "seafood bake" in individual single-serving foil packets on the grill. The recipe calls for a cod fillet, shrimp, corn on the cob, and sliced new potatoes with a little bit of butter and dill, salt and pepper. I've made it once and it turned out very good (even though I'm not a huge fan of dill). Only took about 13-14 minutes on the gas grill.

I'm headed to the beach with some family and, for one of our meals, I wanted to make this recipe. I am not very familiar with foil-packet cooking, however, so I have some questions. Here they are:
1. Can I make 6-8 servings of this and place it in one large covered foil pan and achieve the same results?
2. If I can do the above, what should I estimate the cooking time to be?
3. Can it be done on a charcoal grill instead of a gas grill? Or perhaps the oven would be better?

Also, if you have a favorite foil-packet recipe or tip, please share!

How often do you drink wine without food?

That sounds very familiar! I love to do the same thing when my son (9 months) and daughter (3 years) are asleep and I'm winding down at the end of the day. Wine is great with food, but it's just as good alone sometimes.

best barbecue in gainesville

After reading the similar post (http://www.chowhound.com/topics/409033) on bbq in Tallahassee, I wondered what views were on Gainesville barbecue. Any opinions?

Versailles - Little Havana, Miami

I think your review is spot-on. Versailles is very much a diner, and I never quite made that association until reading your review. I loved going to Versailles when I lived in Miami - I always knew I would get a lot of good food at a great price.

Has anyone been to this restaurant? I'm curious if it lives up to some of the online reviews I've seen.

A 1997 Luce was recommended to me by my local wine shop. Has anyone tasted this one?

So many great suggestions...hmmm...how to choose...

Basically, my husband is not at all an oenophile - zilch, nada. The bottle is basically for me, but he'll be pleased with the sentimental value of the year on the bottle. My budget is up to about $200.

What great suggestions! I'm glad we got married in such a good year. I'll check some of these out and report back on the decision.

Longboat Key recommendations

Yes, I also love the Columbia -- I've been to the one in Tampa, and I think there's one in St. Augustine I've been to. I wanted to try something new, someplace we've never been. Thanks for that suggestion, though!

Longboat Key recommendations

My husband and I are heading to Longboat Key for a weekend trip to celebrate our anniversary. Any suggestions on where to have a nice dinner? I would like to go someplace with a good wine list as well as good food and great service. My husband is turned off by miniature portion sizes at quadruple the price. We're willing to pay $$ if the quality and service are worth it, though. Any ideas?

I have a wedding anniversary and was thinking of surprising my husband with a 1997 bottle of wine, the year of our wedding. Any recommendations? I was leaning towards Champagne, but not tied to that idea.
