Is there a name for this style of feeding oneself?

I eat for texture and temperature and contrast as much as for specific tastes. Your stuffed cabbage meal personifies this, crisp soft sharp mild crumbly smooth creamy etc. I love the idea of composed forkfuls which exactly describes what I am doing with every bite. I will also break it up with one forkful of something on its own, which is part of my meal composition, whether it is in a restaurant or home, a simple sandwich or fabulous meal.

Is There a French-American Cuisine?

My husband is French, and it seems very clear to us when something "tastes French" -- it usually involves cooking with French wine and/or mustard and/or "real" butter -- from grass fed cows, as well as certain combinations of herbs, like shallots parsley and garlic. Our French friends who have moved here fairly recently don't even make food that "tastes French" because the ingredients here for their classic home cooking are so terribly different from those at home. The water content of vegetables, as well as their flavors are SO different.

I cook a kind of French Hybrid Food that works pretty well, but the essentially simple flavor/texturee combos of French food are very hard to duplicate here, hence perhaps the lack of a real French Hybrid Cuisine.

I think that the New Orleans food is equally informed by French and Creole flavors, which is what intensifies the tastes and has created an independent and very successful hybrid cuisine.

Silver Lake area suggestions?

That's what I thought of Barbrix -- with prices pretty close to AOC, which is similarly noisy but with really delicious food.........the first people who told me about Barbrix were West Siders, and I live in Silverlake (yes I choose this spelling) They just love finding places over here that give them good food at a good price with nice people everywhere! And I must say that Cafe Stella's food won't hold up to many other places, here or elsewhere. Calfoodie said she was after the food (although it wouldn't hurt to throw in an indigenous experience I'm sure; )

Silver Lake area suggestions?

I second almost everything Layne says below (or above ; ), but Little Dom's is hands down my favorite restaurant in Silverlake right now. For a group everyone's Darling Barbrix could be deafening on a Saturday night (unless they have a special spot for groups) and you'd be uncomfortable on the patio, whereas you might be able to have them put you in the "Deli" at Little Dom's or take a big booth and be much happpier there IMHO. Atmosphere AND food are great there, but it's mostly atmo at Cliff's Edge as Layne mentions. The food and atmo are also FABULOUS at LAMILL, don't get me wrong -- you could just have coffee and dessert there after your Silverlake dinner, and really have a total neighborhood experience. Great desserts are hard to come by ; )

Best dinner salad, PERIOD?

The good ol' Chinese Chicken Salad at Chin Chin is still great
The Thai Cobb at Fred 62 is original and delish
The Cobb at the Hollywood 101 Coffee Shop is excellent
The Caesar with Salmon at The Nickel is very good -- the dressing is made with anchovies...

Lunch Downtown

How about Ciudad? They should be verrrry helpful, they have a great staff. It's across the St from the Bonaventure, that would work, right? Or Kendall's for Contemporary Traditional, I think they have a nice separate room, but I'm not sure.

Best frisee salad, please

LAMILL in Silverlake has a great one, and they use coffee in the dressing, yet it isn't intrusive at all, just for the aromatic hit, it really tastes quite French. And the rest of the food is great too, plus a lovely environment for your out of town pal ; )

Best chocolate chip cookie in LA?

Wow I'm amazed that no one has mentioned the Choc Chip Cookies at the Bakery inside The Ivy on Robertson Blvd, with toasted hazelnuts, definitely the best in LA. Yes the ones at LAMILL are good too, but the ones at the Ivy are always worth a detour! I wish there were more available fabulous CCC's, but there aren't! An outfit called kelley's cookies (kelleyscookies.com) distributes to the Japanese Markets I frequent, and I have ordered from them for home delivery and I must say that they are really fantastic! (I'm not affiliated with anyone!)

is Vito's on La Cienega an Eat in or Take out Type of place?

Vito's is delicious for NY pizza in LA, and it's a friendly small spot, not like a regular restaurant, but a cafe. The staff and Vito are great, and the "meat" and white pizzas are wonderful, just ask for them to crisp them a bit extra. Bon appetit!

What is your favorite flavor at SCOOPS?

Mmmmmm, Scoops! I love the Vegan flavors, and I'm a carnivore! Chocolate peanut is very chocolate and peanuty and tastes nothing like a Reese's thank heaven! The Coffee Banana was great, I love his uses of spices like Cardamom, Saffron etc, I'd kill for the Pastachio/Saffron someone else mentioned -- must go tonight to see what's happening! I liked the Olive Oil as a foil for a chocolatey one, and the fruity flaves generally don't really do it for me, but they hardly ever do. But I'd try the lychee guava anytime!

Desserts in Pasadena

You can almost always find a space around the corner in the municipal parking lot on Raymond north of Holly, next to the Armory, and it's 1 1/2 hours free!

Desserts in Pasadena

I know it sounds lame, but some of the pies at Marie Callendar's can be very good, and they are all available by the slice -- I can't vouch for many of the fruit ones because I always go for chocolate cream pie, but the boysenberry is very good.

I was very pleased with the dark chocolate cupcake I had at Violet's last week, and I'm a serious chocolate person. I'll have to try the ones you mentioned sometime, but I always have to go for chocolate first!

Europane's chocolate tarte is wonderful, as are their chocolate biscotti.

Julienne's scone is the best I've ever had!
