Healthy Options in the Inner Harbor - Baltimore
There's a few things in Federal Hill. If you can get there before it closes (I believe 7), there's Cross Street Market, which is just up Light Street. They have a bunch of interesting options and a good scene as well. http://www.southbaltimore.com/shop/crossmkt.html
If later than that, nearby is Metropolitan Wine Bar, Coffee Shop, and Restaurant. Good wines and some healthy things on the menu. http://www.metrobalto.com/Dinner%20Menu%2010%206%2006.htm

Thanks for the theme change. To me, that was the one thing that would prevent me from using the site.
Baltimore - Chinese New Year banquet (Chinatown Cafe?)
Here's one of the update threads I believe:
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/173661?query=chinatown%20cafe.
Do a search on Chinatown Cafe and you should get the whole shebang.
Jesse Wong's Hong Kong--help me understand please
Yes, Oriental Manor, who are under new management as of like November of last year, but the food was IMO slightly better than before.
To get there from JWHK, you would simply get on 29N, go up to 40W, and Oriental Manor is in the first big shopping mall on the right. Can't be more than 10 minutes, probably even left.
Jesse Wong's Hong Kong--help me understand please
I had gone there about two years ago and was completely underwhelmed, but I had heard good things about it from this board and other places, so I went again this weekend. And all I can say is why?
Why with a perfectly good dim sum place not ten minutes (probably even less) away just up 29 would anyone go to this joint? How can I even begin? Got seafood chow fun, both the shrimp and scallops were frozen. And they loaded up on garlic. The chicken feet had red peppers and NO black beans in it. Stuffed tofu had maybe four. Spinch in the dumplings was obviously frozen. Charsui bow was store bought as well. Nothing had any flavour.
I've been to I believe every dim sum place between here and Reston (except haven't been to Lucky 3 yet), and usually there's a few things that I like at every place. Here--nothing. My friends wouldn't even take the leftovers home.
Anyways, what am I missing?
Suggestions for Baltimore girls night out
True is a great restauarnt, but I wouldn't consider it a "Girls Night Out" thing unless there was something serious to talk about.
Nasu Blanca is your place.
nice watering hole in elkridge/halethorpe area
Okay, so this isn't an everyday request. Have a sporting event down in the Elkridge/Halethorpe area, and we were looking for a nice spot to hang out afterwards and quaff a few and even perhaps have a bite to eat. Nice does NOT include the Fishhead Cantina. Any thoughts? Would prefer it to be relatively close.
TIA
Any Baltimore-area diners worth the drive?
Baltimore is diner-capitol of the world, so if there aren't good diners in B'more, there aren't good diners anywhere.
That being said, is there anything specific that you're looking for?
Sip & Bite is another place that's great value and good people-watching too.
Midweek specials - Baltimore?
Birches has a "buy one get another one 1/2 price" special on certain items (pasta and I believe sandwiches) on Wednesday nights.
Thursdays at Captain Larry's: pitcher and pound of shrimp for $10.00 (certain beers I believe are a little extra).
Is Costas Inn good, or a recommend good Md crabhouse
I was at Dockside on Boston Ave. last week, and the crabs there were very good. Mostly $46s and I thought they were priced well, but they had six $78s left (we got there late) and they were enormous.
The rest of their food is much better than Bo Brooks or LP Steamers; would recommend it.
Best Peking Duck in Baltimore/surrounding areas - no DC, please
I've never gotten Peking Duck in Baltimore, the three places I'd check out if I had to get it are:
Oriental Manor in Ellicott City (Route 40 and Route 29--they have pretty good dim sum so my guess is that they'd do a pretty good Peking Duck.
Jesse Wong's Hong Kong.
If I had to check in Baltimore City, I'd probably try Ding How as the best Chinese restaurant I've eaten at in the City (not saying a great deal.)
Federal Hill rant
I think the deal is that Nick's isn't supposed to be a restaurant, it's supposed to be a scene. It does the latter pretty well from what I understand. The food is just there for something to do between the weekends.
Baltimore greek and vietnamese food
In addition to Miss Pho in Seoul Plaza (Security Mall), there's also Pho #1 on route 40 in the same mall as Value City. It's pretty good, definitely worthwhile if you're in the area. Finally, I think there's a place outside the beltway on route 40 called Pho Nam, but I've never been there.
Someone should open a Pho place in highlandtown. I'd be a regular.
First Date: Baltimore Restaurant
I think that's because one of the requirements was, "Not a place where people go to see and be seen." That would also eliminate Salt in my opinion.
Advice on really good seasonal seafood around Baltimore
Crabs in this season or the others are generally from LA/NC, so I wouldn't worry about that. Went to Dockside, which is a newish restaurant on Boston Street next to the Merritt Athletic Club and had some very good crabs. You might want to check it out.
Mama's is a good choice for Seafood though.
First Date: Baltimore Restaurant
Yes they exist. Here's a couple of suggestions, in no particular order other than they come to mind first.
(1) La Cazuela, on Eastern. I've had consistently good food there. Definitely off the beaten path and exotic. Not all that expensive either. It's Ecuadorian, so it's not for everyone, but I highly recommend it.
(2) Chameleon Cafe (usually not that crowded; call in advance) over on Harford Road. Very good French food. Somewhat pricier. I've not been there in a couple of years so not exactly sure what the seating is like, but someone else (I'm sure) will point out if it's too crowded.
(3) I would include the Carylye Club over on University in this realm. Definitely the right atmosphere; I like their food (BTW, went to its sister restaurant the Spice Company and did not like it as much.)
(4) Birches and/or Henninger's are good neighborhood joints. Might be a little loud, but both definitely have the "soul" part.
(5) I think many people would include Mezze here, but it's pretty small.
Those would be my first choices. A few other restaurants that come to mind are: Zodiac by the Charles Theatre, the upstairs dining room at Dionysius in Mt. Vernon (though I've eaten there twice and have been maybe one other table), and possibly one of the restaurants in Greektown (Ikaros and Zorba's get mentioned here sometimes).
I've left off the really pricey ones like Abercrombie, Corks, Brewer's Art, True, etc.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
NYE dinner in Baltimore with great atmosphere!
Most, if not all, restaurants are going to have a "New Year's Eve" atmosphere: e.g., prix fixe, limited choice.
Is that what you're looking for?
VaHound in Fells Point
Forgot Henninger's and Salt. Henninger's is about five blocks from the heart of Fells Point; Salt is about 8. Salt you can walk in probably ten to fifteen minutes tops.
HELP --visit to Baltimore
You seem to have your info; hope you enjoy your stay. Just like to make a few additions.
(1) There is a Wegman's not far from you. I don't know where you are from, but if you don't have Wegman's where you live, you might want to check it out. 250,000 sq. foot grocery store, some people believe it's the best grocery store in the US.
(2) Annapolis is an hour from Baltimore, so it would be probably 90 minutes from Sparks if you drive fast. Probably the easiest way to go is 83S to 695 WEST to 97S. 695W can get very congested during rush hour.
(3) Oriental Manor is the closest dim sum, and it's good, but give yourself 40 minutes. It would 83S to 695W to 70W to 29S to Route 40 West.
(4) There is a pretty authentic Chinese place in Towson called Golden Gate. If you like won ton, they have the best in the area. Get the roast pork won ton noodle woup and the whole steamed fish and you won't be disappointed.
(5) Baltimore is full of history, so if you like to relive that stuff, I'd recommend visits to Fort McHenry (south of Federal Hill) and Patterson Park (east of downtown). Patterson Park is in between Canton and Fells Point.
(6) It's definitely walkable from Fells Point to Little Italy to Inner Harbor. If you were doing it without stopping, I'm sure you could do it in 20 minutes (it's really less than a mile by the shortest route). I'd start in Fells Point, walk down Thames, circle round to Aliceanna or Fleet, and when you see the Whole Foods, go north a couple of blocks and that will put you in Little Italy. After Little Italy, just cross President's Street and your in the Inner Harbor.
(7) There are three well-known restaurants near you; I don't get up that way much so I don't know what the current state of each is, but by reputation, the three are: The Milton Inn (you should avoid this one); Friendly Farms (reputed to have some of the best crabcakes in the area; call before you head up to make sure they're open); and the Manor Tavern (I haven't been there for a good 18 months, but it's been worthwhile both times I've gone).
Hope you enjoy our town!
VaHound in Fells Point
You have a slew of options. True, in the Admiral Fell Inn, is an organic restaurant. Timothy Dean, a French Bistro (chef trained under Jean-Louis Pallidan at the Watergate and helped to open Pesce). Black Olive and Kali's Court are also very upscale Greek food, probably like nothing else in DC. La Cazuela is a consistently good, mid-priced Ecuadorian Restaurant. Pazo is hip, trendy, and Spanish tapas. Charleston is one of the top three restaurants in Baltimore. Louisiana is an option, although I've not been there for a while so I'm not going to add my comment.
If you're looking for less formal, there's Peter's Inn and One-Eyed Mikes as well.
Hope this helps.
New place in Glen Burnie
to see the link, you need to paste both lines into your clipboard, copy it somewhere so that you can convert it into one line, and then paste the entire .html line into your browser.
Or you can go to http://www.hometownglenburnie.com/, and then scroll down to "Business" and open the story that says, "Restaurant featuring top chef to open in Glen Burnie."
Fair use quote: "A well-known restaurateur hopes to spice up life in the heart of Glen Burnie, opening an Italian eatery next week in a spot that's been closed since a devastating fire six years ago."
Chef is Mike Wagner, who worked at Piccolo's and taught at AA County CC.
New Irish(?) bar/rest. in Simons of Butchers Hill's old spot (bmore)
There was a blurb in the Baltimore Sun yesterday about the restaurant as well: http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/dining/bal-fo.tabletalk20dec20,0,6679216.story?coll=bal-pe-alacarte
Went there for the first time as well. Food was pretty good. We had the Irish stuff (Guiness Stew and Shepard's Pie)--wasn't groundbreaking, but certainly was a hearty dish with good flavor. There was a lot of food as well. Will go back.
First floor is non-smoking; upstairs is not. Bar is on the first floor; that's probably why you saw people puffing outside.
Oceanaire in Charm City
Agree. It bills itself as the "Steakhouse for seafood lovers." 'Nuff said. You can do much better.
Xanadu Baltimore
Had lunch there; food was pretty good, at least different than what you can get elsewhere in the area (friend got the tenderloin; I got the veggie casserole, both got shrimp bisque which was tasty but pretty salty).
Wines were nice.
Didn't really think about the price but it is pricier than average.
In short, I'd recommend trying it. I'd also recommend trying Cazbar on Charles. I'm not going to say that they are both knockouts, but certainly worth a visit.
Angelina's Mail Order
I'd be curious to hear whether your friend actually went to the restaurant to pick up the gift certificate. Please note that the website says that if it only has four or five digits, or was purchased prior to September 1, 2006, there's a special number to call. Also, if you go to the "About Us" section of the website, it has the following disclaimer:
NOTE: We are not affiliated with the current management of Angelina's Restaurant. We are a completely separate entity responsible for the mail-order of Angelina's crab cakes.
Good luck.
Angelina's Mail Order
Did your friend get the certificate from the website? http://www.crabcake.com/Articles.asp?ID=124. If so, I assume the crabcakes will be okay, but I've not tried them.
I'm assuming that you're not flying in from Phoenix to go to the restaurant. Its the restaurant that I understand is weird.
Italian markets in Balto
Dipasquale's over in Highlandtown was better. The place that everyone raves about downtown is called Trinacria, not far from Lexington Market. Whole in the wall but a great value.
Federal Hill delivery
there's a place in cross street market that does delivery or will deliver to your car on your way home. I know nothing about this place, other than it was in the Baltimore Sun about a month ago.

Dinenr with a group in Catonsville
You can always try Salsa Grill. I've not been there in a while, but I believe someone wrote a good review on this board recently. It's on Security just inside the Beltway; very good Latin American.
A long time ago, I used to enjoy going to Pebbles Pub. Typical bar food, but they did it well. Anyone been there recently?
