Soup dumplings in Mia-Ft. Lauderdale?
I don't want to drive anyone mad, but I had a massive, wooden tray of about 15 of them in Jujiang China for about 33 cents that fed 3 people.
Best Burgers Miami 2012
Never enjoyed much at gastroPod, though the design is wonderful.
Real Japanese sushi where are you?
NAOE is in a class by itself. However, for more reasonable, properly prepared sashimi and sushi, I recommend three places: Su-Shin Izekaya in Coral Gables, Matsuri in Coral Gables (though I dislike the crowd) and Maido in Doral. All are Japanese owned and operated, so each feels the need to conform to a certain standard. I would rather go to a 7-11 in Japan than eat at most of the others, though I am not speaking against the recommendations here.
(Sorry for the repeat friends)
Bad Experiences
I found myself downtown last evening near the Epic, so I thought I would try the Happy Hour at Area 31 that I had heard about. Everything was bad except for two things. It is very nice on the roof, so that is one. Upon entering, the hostess was busy, then occupied, then forgot we were waiting as the phones at her station rang incessantly. She was polite finally -- just unconcerned with doing a good job. We went outside. The waitress was not interested in divulging the Happy Hour information. I confess I was already irritated. She grudgingly said they had ceviche, french FRIES, croquettes FRIED, and calamari FRIED. In the end, we got one drink each and calamari for around $35. The $6 calamari was delicious, the second good thing. If the kitchen knew what the staff was doing at this place, they would fire everybody and start over. I will never return.
Galangal / galanga plants - any interest?
It's kind of you to offer and I would love some galangal, but I am in Pinecrest below Coral Gables. It might be easier for me to jump the fence at Fairchild with a shovel.
Weekday Lunch near Bar Harbour that Won't Break the Bank
For quite a while now, you two can ALWAYS be counted on.
Weekday Lunch near Bar Harbour that Won't Break the Bank
I need to take a humble artist to lunch midweek. Makoto and the others will freak him out. What's cool and/or aesthetic with no pretense?
NYC Foodie visiting Miami for hole in the walls ??
Not a dive, but Soya Y Pomodoro is a great Miami space and tasty when they are on (which is on occasion). When the jazz is playing, it is nice.
NYC Foodie visiting Miami for hole in the walls ??
Must have been the homemade ginger beer overflowing
NYC Foodie visiting Miami for hole in the walls ??
If that sounds great, there is a delicious Trinidadian joint with a table or two serving Roti down south on SW 160th St. called Caribbean Delite. Sango serving Jamaican is in the same plaza and legitimate Vietnamese place PhoThang is across the way. Each is less atmospheric than El Palacio de los Jugos or La Camaronera. Uppercase dives like B&M I think. Clives might be cool too in midtown if they are open.

Many will weigh in, so I won't be selfish. There are lots of possibilities; here is one:
Happy Wine, order a prosciutto pami (panini miami), get a bottle of wine, and thank me later.

any recs for dessert in South Beach after dinner?
My apologies for any confusion. For me, Ocean Drive is a like a cheap cruise, only the crowd is less refined. I am not a fan of anything there save for the historical aspects. I find it a punishment. Lincoln Road suits me more.
One Night in Miami
How about Crazy About You in Brickell on the water if the beach is not compulsory? In the price range and romantic.
any recs for dessert in South Beach after dinner?
Ocean Drive is as fun to walk around on as Disneyworld.

The Frieze - get a sorbet and float to heaven where you can look down upon those frolicking on Lincoln Road.
Garcia's vs La Camaronera
It's quick. BTW, Miami's got all kinds of cool joints like this. El Palacio de los Jugos, Happy Wine, La Sandwicherie, all these frita places, El Morro Castle. It goes on and on. Some like La Moon have even gone upscale/mainstream.
Garcia's vs La Camaronera
La Camaronera will test this. I can rarely find people to join me there.
Miami Beach Prom Alternative
My daughter has some sense, preferring to ditch the after prom for a fine dinner. What do you recommend which is atmospheric but unpretentious, but won't lessen the experience. While she has blossoming good taste, she does not want to dent any future inheritance.
Garcia's vs La Camaronera
When you see the neighborhood, the strip mall, and the interior, you'll understand the price point. I too love exactly what Frod orders, but don't expect glamour.
Foodie parents coming to miami in 2 weeks--looking for reco's
I liked it a lot. Frod reviewed it thoroughly on his Food for Thought blog and was as always all over it. The staff was exceedingly low pressure, respectful of the clients' space, and casual while professional at the same time, and the (celebrity) chef was very humble and unaffected. For high quality creativity and a warm vibe, I think they do a great job. I'd hang out there if I could. If you are not high maintenance person/customer, I think it's about perfect.
Best Argentinian Parilladas and Facturas in Miami?
Patagonia in Doral has an authentic Argentian vibe -- always alive unlike anything else in Doral -- and its branches in Coral Gables, Key Biscayne, and South Miami will satisfy the hole in the Tex-Gentina sweet tooth if you want it casual and cool, but on styrofoam. On the other hand, these are good casual places for wine as well, with cheap corking and real glass.
Where are the best burger joints in Miami (possibly South Beach)?
Ha! I love it, but doubtful. If that's true, 8oz. is really bad.
Where are the best burger joints in Miami (possibly South Beach)?
Why no mentions of 8oz? Distance?
Best Sushi in Miami (South) Beach / Pubbelly Sushi?
The 7-11's in Japan are better than what we often get. It's not personal. I too snickered when I saw the master at Sushi Deli putting things into a 1980's toaster oven. The gentleman is talented, but this is a mom and pop operation, not Jiro Dreams of Sushi. The desperation to place it into some otherworldly category is a bit absurd. To me it's good, but not special.
