Who has the best fish tacos in Portland?

If we include Portland Metro, then you need to come up to Vancouver to Woody's Taqueria. Evergreen and Columbia in DT Vancouver. From DT Portland it is a 10minute drive.

Scott, the owner, has worked in many fine restaurants. His affinity for Mexican food led him to open Woody's. The fish tacos are true Ensenada style beer battered, not grilled nor breaded, fried fish tacos. Tortilla is home made. The cream sauce is tasty and you get your choice of salsa. Finish it with a killer agave margarita.

Far and away the best, most authentic fish taco in Portland. The best classic margarita in town too. When he makes his specials, truly one of the best Mexican food joints in town. Almost as good as Autentica. We're not talking taco/burrito shack, we are talking real Mexican food.

The Por Que No fish taco is really good, but it is definitely what I would consider 'poshican'. Red cabbage and mango salsa...you'll never find these things at a fish taco stand in Baja. They are worth the drive though.

At Pepinos on 23rd, you get what you pay for. I'd eat it. It's good. But not worth going out of my way for. The batter is too bland. The sauces don't taste as fresh.

Taqueria San Felipe used to be a staple of mine. Absolutely worth the drive. Though it is definitely San Felipe style, hollandaise style sauce vs. sour cream and mayo sauce, it still WAS very good. They were the real deal. But they started charging too much and more importantly, their quality has dropped. Again, the batter and the salsas make or break a taco for me. I haven't been in a year. But if I'm in Sellwood, I'd have one.

My housemate works at Ricks and I am looking forward to trying them. I also need to venture out and try a few others. Tigard/Beaverton area comes to mind. But I don't have to, I have mine, and I have Woody's.

In the interest of full disclosure, I recently started and own a fish taco and ceviche micro business in the Portland area.

Vancouver WA Taco Update

El Grullo is the taco truck on 164th & 1st in the ARCO parking lot. Oscar and his wife own it. She is usually at the one on Andresen near Burton. Also in a gas station parking lot! I prefer the Andresen one, though the 164th street truck is better than any other place in the area.

Don Pedro's on 4th Plain is leagues ahead of Muchas Gracias! Muchas is a 2am-I-need-a-fix type of place; Don Pedro's is worth driving to. The Menudo on the weekends is a must.

As a side note, the Mercado Latino behind Don Pedro's is one of my favorite places to shop for meats. The Codornizes (cornish game hens) come ready to be roasted or plopped on the grill. The are size of pre-hormone chickens! They must be juicing themselves but are absolutely succulent! You won't buy grocery store chickens again! Their prepared carne asada (usually hand cut flank steak) is not my favorite. I buy the raw one and marinate it in a citus based marinade. Grill them on the hottest grill you can find. YUMMY!!

One most people don't know about is Super Taco Express on HWY 99 just south of 99TH Ave on the east side of the street. Grungy little place with a tiny kitchen. Best machaca burrito in town. Besides my place of course! I also recommend the flautas (taquitos to most people in the us). The guac sauce served is reminds me of my mothers sauce!

Enjoy!
