VISITING BOSTON? One Hound’s Guide to Historic Areas and Restaurants
Wow! Not sure if this thread is still active....but that you OC for this!! I am a native New Yorker and now living in Pasadena. I come home to visit NYC every summer. This is the first visit that my husband and I will incorporate some travel with the family visits. I have lived on the East Coast for 38 years and I never visited Boston!! Well this will change this summer. We are really excited and I will be reading through your selections. I hope I can narrow them down:) We will be taking the train from nyc and staying three full days in Boston. Thanks again!!
Ginger Pear Marini
Hello all
I had a great ginger pear martini at Roy's Hawaiian and I want to make it at home. The bartender wold not give me the recipe...but I watched him intently!
The description on the menu had : nigori sake, four square vodka, agave nectar...I watched him make it numerous times and I could also see that he put in canton ginger liquor. He served it with crushed ice and a pear slice.
I have been doing some research , but I am not sure of the amounts....also, I was thinking of making a home made pear nectar to add to the alcohol.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Cooking chicken in a slow cooker
Hi everyone
I am very excited about my new slow cooker. I absolutely love it (it is a 6 quart size). I have made an amazing white bean and kale soup this week. I tried chicken pieces on the bone with fresh rosemary and lemon. I browned the chicken first and then put in crock pot with some stalks of rosmary and I squeezed two lemons in there. My slow cooker has a temp probe , which I set for 180. After the internal temp is reached , the slow cooker automatically turns to the warm mode (which I love....but I think it dried out my chicken). The taste was amazing...but I felt that some of the meat was dry. I have never cooked with this tool.....so I am trying different techniques out. The soupd was great....but not sure if chicken pieces was the best thing to put in the crock pot. Should i have filled the pot with water, so that the pieces were partially submerged? I was worried that the skin would be soggy. Perhaps I should have set the meat probe to 170 instead of 180.
Any thoughts, ideas, tips?
Thanks!!

late night eats in downtown LA
Hi All
My cousin will be arriving this evening and staying in a hotel downtown. Can you recommend a restaurant/lounge/bar in order to have a cocktail/some food etc. They will be arriving at 9pm. We are open to all cuisines. (They are arriving from nyc and are dying to try an in and out burger. I checked on their website and they do not seem to have one in the downtown area...)
Thank you in advance!!
Please help me with my soapstone emergency!!
Thanks chemical! I appreciate your good humor :)
Please help me with my soapstone emergency!!
Thx chemical!! I think it is very smooth already . I was just concerned about the whiteness ( it was as if I sanded off the finish) the olive oil def helped ( is mineral oil better, or will they both do the same job? I notice when the light hits the counter , I can see where I sanded . I am just nervous because we recently renovated the whole house and moved back in. I didn't want to ruin it ... And I don't want to hear about it from my hubby !! ;)
Please help me with my soapstone emergency!!
Hello all
I was trying to sand out some scratches in our new soapstone counters . I read that I could use a 220 grit sand paper along with an orbital sander . I got out the scratches, but the sanding left a horrible white-ish finish on the counters . When I came home I rubbed some olive oil all over the counters ( I did not have mineral oil) . It is starting to look better. Does anyone have some suggestions to fix this , or am I on the right track ? Any advice will be appreciated .

cooking time for pulled pork?
Here is a silly question...but I will ask it because I do not want to mess up my fourth of july main dish!! The recipe calls for cooking a 5 pound pork shoulder for 6 hours at 300 degrees. However , I am making a larger roast....more like 15 pounds. Do cooking time is still the same, correct? Even though I increased the amount of meat, I still cook it for 6 hours at 300 degrees.
Thank you in advance!!!!

Simple and delicious mac and cheese recipe?
Hi everyone
I am having a fourth of july party. I want to make a great mac and cheese dish...I have been searching on line and cant seem to find one I really like. I saw ina g's recipe for mac and cheese, although it looked delicious, I want to keep the ingredients simple (because of cost, and there will be a few children at the party ). Any suggestions? I love mac and cheese with a home made bread crumb topping...and a 2 or three types of cheese.. but I do not know measurements etc. I will be having 20 + people at the party.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
A question about infused simple syrups
I basically made simple syrup. Then chopped up a whole bunch of basil and put in the pot with the simple syrup as it cooled. I let it set for about a half hour. Then I strained the syrup of the basil and stored in a bottle. Then to make the drink I put gin (or vodka) in a shaker with the syrup (to your taste) and then I squeezed some fresh lime. Shake with ice and pour! you can garnish with a small basil leaf.
A question about infused simple syrups
thank you. I will give it a whirl!! it is a great cocktail......basil infused syrup with lime juice and gin
