Cold Weather = Saltenas....new places to try
I just forwarded this over to some Bolivian relatives who live about 15 minutes from there on Route 108. I'll let you know if we get another report.
Cold Weather = Saltenas....new places to try
They have them, and are currently my favorite in the NoVa area.
Cold Weather = Saltenas....new places to try
I'm partially Bolivian, my Grandfather is Boliviano and my Mother was born there and have eaten many a saltena in my day and I found Steve's description of a saltena to be dead on. A traditional saltena has all the ingredient "chunks" ie. the egg, meat etc. but the sauce inside is definitely on the "soupier" side. Often if they sit for a while the sauce will congeal enough that it won't drip all over the place. They are definitely nowhere as dry as an empanada. I would put it somewhere between stewey and soupy. You have to remember that different regions of Bolivia, and even Northern Argentina have their own style of saltena which can be different to what one is used to.
I haven't hit all the locations, but I was somewhat disappointed in Pike's the last time I went. I have found myself going back to Tutto Benne most often recently, they have the largest (almost too big to be a saltena) and have the right level of juiciness and the shell has always had the right texture, not too crispy and not too soggy.
If anyone has any other reccomendations I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this thread. Anyone know the best place to get some falso conejo while we're on the Bolivian subject?
Columbia Heights Delivery Options?
I had Pete's Apizza the other night, and they said they deliver. Pretty expensive, however it was really good IMO, New Haven style pizza.
Best Buffalo Chicken Pizza?
Ledo's has a decent buffalo pizza. I'm normally a huge ledo's fan, but the one in Georgetown can be a little "meh". I have ordered it a bunch of times though so if I have a suggestion it would be to order to pizza cooked a little extra, or ask for well done. Also, unless you like strong bleu cheese ask for them to hold the bleu cheese crumbles on top, or maybe ask for half the pizza with it. Ledo's is a MD staple, try the pepperoni. It is square pizza, and each slice has one thick pepperoni on it that develops into a personal bowl of grease. Pretty awesome.
Columbia Heights Delivery Options?
Ok, I know this topic was posted previously, but it was about 2 years ago, and with the rate of growth in Columbia Heights I figured something has to have changed.
I just moved to Columbia Heights, 14th/Irving, and was wondering what are some stars in the food delivery department if there are any. I've been living in DC for about two years but lived downtown, so am really only familiar with Chen's.
So, any chowhounders have recommendations in the food delivery department? What do you normally order when you don't feel like cooking or picking up.
Also, any other general recommendations for Columbia Heights? I'm a big fan of everything, especially ethnic food, and yes I've seen other recommendations on this board, just looking for any new finds.
Thanks!
"Real" jerky in Baltimore?
Wow, I'd love to know where in DC they have this. I live downtown and am always looking for real jerky, no obertos please. What places do you know about?
In regards to Baltimore, sorry can't help you there but at least this post gets a bump!
Churreria Madrid
I went two weeks ago on a sunday afternoon and it was as good as ever. I love that place.
near Farragut North
My favorite spot by far is the Greek Deli on 19th between L and M right next to Nooshi (also popular for quick sushi). Very home cooking type feel carry-out place.
Best Buffalo Wings in DC?
Hey all,
I live in the West End/ Foggy Bottom area. On saturday I had wings over at J. Pauls and they were great, I've also had good luck at Clydes. What other places (Bonus Points for being close) have great wings. I'm not talking about the soggy, fatty wings some places serve up. I'm talking about wings for wing eaters. Multiple sauces, delivery, are a plus as well.
Anyone?
Cheesesteaks?
I'm a big fan of George's King of Falafel and Cheesesteak right in Georgetown over the bridge from westend...Get the Super and ask for some of the homemade hotsauce they make....I'm a fan
Vapiano
I just had Vaps for the very first time at the location near DuPont, it was PACKED for lunch but I thought it was an interesting place. I got the Pizza Toscana and I thought it was really good(and i usually go for the less gourmet type pizzas) I'd rate it a 7.8 out of 10
BA - Puerto Madero
I had an AMAZING steak at Lilas, it was the 50ish Peso standard steak they had, i forget the name...theres also a really good "Tenedor Libre" (Free Fork) which is basically an all you can eat style place that costs around 30 Pesos ($10)...the all you can eat places in BA are amazing
yerba mate newbe, any suggestions/advice?
I meant iced during the summer, our winter is their summer ha got confused
yerba mate newbe, any suggestions/advice?
During my time in Argentina we used to drink mate using the Mate Gourds and the bombilla...we would pack up the gourd and kind of jam the bombilla in towards the bottom, add some sugar and hot water and drink, adding hot water every couple minutes... I dont like many bitter type things (tea, coffee) but i developed a taste for it. Also people enjoyed it iced during the winter, i had a friend who lived up in the north by Iguazu who had a name for it, he was Guarani but I forget the name of it, oh well.
Spanish Tapas Bar? Argentine Asado?
Hey guys, first time poster here. I have done some travelling in South America and Europe and absolutely love Spanish Tapas. I was wondering can anyone recommend places to go for either a Tapas style happy hour place with friends? Most places like this tend to be very expensive (which i'm willing to do on special occasions) but are there any that I should know about. PS I love that spot Churreria Madrid but its too far out of my way to go usually haha...
ALSO, can anyone point me in the direction of an Argentine Parilla type restaurant in DC..my friend was telling me about a spot in Bethesda, Divino Lounge I believe, that was expensive but good. Feel free to recommend other Latin American restaurants that are musts, I absolutely love Peruvian (Been to the spot at 19th and I Calantera or something), Bolivian, Carribean, and all these types of foods.
Thanks y Salud!
