Where are the best dill pickles in the Twin Cities?

I agree. Gedney's for me, too. I also like their Jalapeno Babies. Man, that's weird to type...

Tangent - I also like Gedney Preserves State Fair Cherry . Too sweet probably, but perfect for PBJs.

Why do no national burger chains have veggie burgers?

Good to know. Burger King wins.

Why do no national burger chains have veggie burgers?

From McDonald's nutrition sheet:
"French Fries:
Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*, citric acid [preservative]), dextrose, sodium acid
pyrophosphate (maintain color), salt. Prepared in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to
preserve freshness). Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent.
CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK.
*(Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients)."

Be horrified all you want but they are vegetarian.

Around the World in 80 Plates [Split from Top Chef thread]

I had to drop ATWI80P from my dvr auto-record list. Without Chevin it's just no fun. I have a perverse love of watching people boldly lie when there's no reason for it. He was this show's guilty pleasure.

It's basically Lord of the Flies with food references. Not that there's anything wrong with that - I just don't have the time to watch something I don't find truly compelling.

Works every time.

Plastic Bags That Don't Stink?

Yes, I use plastic bags. I re-use them and am very conscious of environmental impact.

There was a time when Ziplocs were the only major brand that didn't have that chemical "made in China" smell. Now they do, too.

I don't need suggestions on alternatives to plastic bags, thanks. I just want to find plastic bags that don't smell funky.

Two New Boards: Vegetarian & Vegan and Special Diets

I thought that too, at first. But, there is one clear advantage to the Vegetarian board: when posts dissing a vegetarian's choice, even when it's wrapped with seemingly on-topic "helpful suggestions," it's very clear that post should be removed. When those helpful suggestions" are on a general board, the need for pruning is less obvious.

Have you ever made and/or cooked w seitan?

I make Seitan O' Greatness because I like my seitan dense and chewy. http://yeahthatveganshit.blogspot.com/2007/04/infamous-seitan-recipe-o-greatness.html

Then I 'shred' it and bake it in homemade (it has a lot of condiments in it, but I consider it homemade) ginger-y garlic-y barbecue sauce. Yowza.

Vegetarian and B12

Whole Foods vegetarian vitamins supposedly contain plant derived B12.

Is there any Vegetarian Corned Beef product out there? Or any fake meat product that would work in Corned beef and cabbage?

You can make Seitan O Greatness and flavor with pickling spices. http://www.theppk.com/2007/04/seitan-o-greatness-takes-over-the-internet/

The thing I like about this seitan recipe is the resulting loaf texture is fairly dense and the seitan can be used in other dishes and it will remain intact.

Maybe this can get moved to the Vegetarian/Vegan board so you'll get more responses?

Vegetarian Comfort Foods

I love vegetarian comfort food. I make tuna-less casserole, starting with a mushroom béchamel sauce. Noodles, mushroom béchamel, onions, celery, carrots peas and lots of cheese, including cottage cheese baked together.

Other comfort foods I really like:

Red lentil sloppy Joes. http://vegandad.blogspot.com/2010/04/red-lentil-sloppy-joes.html

Seitan O’ Greatness http://www.theppk.com/2007/04/seitan-o-greatness-takes-over-the-internet/ This works really well “shredded” and baked with barbeque sauce.

Roasted Ratatouille with Eggs & Cheese http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/roasted_ratatouille_with_eggs_cheese.html

Yay comfort food!

Help - nonstick pots are tasting "soapy"

Help - nonstick pots are tasting "soapy"

Just because it's the same soap doesn't actually mean it's the *same* soap. I've noticed a lot of changes in products I've used for years. Ziploc bags for instance, now have a weird smell.

Try Method dish soap. It rinses clean and does a great job cleaning dishes. Right now at Target there's a $1 off coupon for select Method product (not sure if dish soap is one of the products).

Genuine Home-Baked Cakes

Oh how I hope this was no April Fool's joke... From Facebook: "Yellow Cake w/chocolate frosting comes to Antie Angel's on Monday." Yowza!

Food Network & Cooking Channel 2012 Season Upfront Announcement

So Cooking Channel is now the Food Travel Channel and Food Network is now All Day Food Fights? This trend of giving a cable channel an "identity" by homogenizing its programming is getting way too specific. Soon we'll have the Ticonderoga Pencil Collectors Channel, because you know, everyone has used a pencil so it's gotta be popular.*

Could you hide them until they're fixed? It's really distracting to see an enticing thread you thought you might have missed only to realize it's for a completely different part of the globe.

Hot and Sour Soup

Not what you are looking for since it has no chicken stock but I love this recipe: http://www.tastehongkong.com/recipes/chinese-hot-and-sour-soup-vegetarian-style/

TJ mustard... 2 gram protein in a TSP?

Yes. Should be 40 mg, not 40 G.

TJ mustard... 2 gram protein in a TSP?

I caught a mistake on Whole Foods frozen broccoli - 5 G sodium per serving. I checked the non-organic bag and it said 5 mg. Oh for the loss of an m...

Mini brioche buns

This is not a great answer as they're not locally owned but... Trader Joe's has them.

Best "cheap" gin?

Aristocrat Gin is the embodiment of the Aristocrat joke.

"What''s the gin called?"

From Anderson's Sugaring Season 2012:

"March 20th
Mother nature has finally got the best of us, as our trees are starting to bud here, effectively ending our 2012 season. It looks like we'll end up with about a 1/4 of a crop, and while there are exceptions, this seems to be consistent with most producers throughout the state. We were hoping for another blast of cold weather, and while that may still come at some point, we've had too many warm days now to get any more good sap.

For additional information, check out the article below that ran in the March 19th issue of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Wisconsin maple producers endure worst year in memory. "

I'm Sick of These Threads

Thank you. That does help.

Freezing Food

Have you ever seen the movie "Mother" with Albert Brooks and Debbie Reynolds? When she takes a huge block of cheese from her freezer - it just kills me. http://movieclips.com/DkuV-mother-movie-thats-a-lot-of-cheese/

As for freezing things that contain dairy... I have never had a problem freezing mac and cheese.

georgian food/restaurants

Hey, Ms. kitten. I saw your thread on Site Talk and thought I'd respond.

Have you tried Kiev Foods? From the Yelp entry by Elise S., "When they're in stock, pick up some Georgian kupati - a garlic-laden lamb and pork sausage with cilantro - that are made in New York. "

Who knows. Invoking the Y site might get this yanked, but I thought I'd try to help.

Top Chef Favorite Challenges

While I agree to an extent, I just loved episode 1 of TC Masters..
From Wikipedia:
"Elimination Challenge: The chefs are challenged to create a three-course meal for the critics and a group of college students using only a microwave, a toaster oven, and a hot plate. They are restricted to a limited pantry and must cook in actual dorm rooms at Pomona College in Claremont, California. "

Watching people who had so solemnly participated as judges on Top Chef getting hit with the wacky stick just made me smile.
