Last Minute – City Hall / Shotgun Wedding – Dinner Suggestions?

Steve R and I are on the same wave length (often); City Hall would be my suggestion as well. My man and I celebrated an anniversary there this past Sat night and I am always struck by how pretty a place it is. Romantic. They now offer a specials menu, too, to add some variety. The duck was really very good.

Hurricane Damage to NJ Restaurants

One sign of progress all these months later: I saw a mention recently that the shell that was Sallee Tee's was being torn down. I took a walk by yesterday and was happy to see a new, 6 foot high concrete foundation being finished off. I have no idea what new
incarnation may be revealed but I was glad to see something moving forward at last.

A sad picture, indeed, although less in a way of missing what it had become over the past several years. I wont miss the food.

I remember as kids being set off into fits of giggles when ordering lobster. The servers would ask how we wanted it cooked: "BR or BO?"

Favorite Defunct Monmouth County Restaurant

I haven't thought about The Peninsula in years--it was a favorite summertime place to hang out and have a drink.

And there was another Cobblestones (not a diner) about a thousand years ago up on Hwy 35 in Middletown, a very favorite place. They served a pretty wonderful steak with a hundred tiny sauteed mushrooms scattered over the top. I think it is a Gloria Nilsson agency now. It was sort of across the street from another favorite--for very different reasons--The Oasis. Great place to hang out, great pizza.

I do miss the old Clam Hut in Highlands, too; wonderful casual atmosphere, great steamers, great smelts and lobster. It was the end of an era when the daughter of the original owner died and the family sold. It was everything that Bahr's should have been and never was.

Brighton Bar. It's my favorite dive bar in the neighborhood. The only time I don't love it is during football season when the Vikings are playing. There is a long-standing tradition of the embedded Vikings fans (and this is a swell group of people) of buying shots of blackberry liqueur for the crowd when the Vikings score a TD.

McLoone's would be a mistake.

Parking on the street is easy, at least in February. I love the place.

Brooklyn's Perfect Slice

I really don't like the pie at La Villa. The crust is thick and doughy and fairly unpleasant. There is even a "crispy crust" offered but it is just as thick and breadlike as the other.

Charley's in No. Long Branch, lots of sand to Avenel Blvd, but open. Not exactly thrilling food-wise, but the bar cheers my heart.

Sallee Tee's is sort of deja vu. Not unexpected, but sad. 5 feet of water in the place, they are putting on their happy face and saying that it will take a couple of weeks to dry out and clean up before they can open again.

Date at Fonda or Other Mexican?

I think Fonda would be a great date restaurant. Pretty, lively without being too bouncy and the food is a cut above. I was with a group and a number of dishes were passed around and we were impressed by the plating and the quality of the food. Inventive. I wish I could remember every single thing that we tried, but I do remember the duck zarape as being especially fine. I remember the camarones adobados, too, served over a great spicy green rice.

Good, carefully made drinks. They make a nice mojito but I have to mention the China Poblana,: silver tequila, orange liquor, and fresh lime juice shaken with poblano chile and fresh basil, really, really good.

like Waterfront Ale House, but I *really* don't like their wings. Bonnie's wings float my boat (although I could skip their blue cheese sauce). I think egit is right--you have to try them to see if they are what you want.

I don't know when it will open, but there is another Calexico coming to 5th Ave in Park Slope next to Bonnie's. Not a rec since I've never eaten there, but it might suit you for time and place.

Famous Sichuan is the Real Deal

I found myself in Chinatown last week and took an opportunity to stop for dinner at Famous Sichuan. I don’t think it was an entirely random choice; I feel as if my feet had been leading me there all day. Not my fault.

My current favorites, shredded beef with spicy capsicum and braised beef filet with napa cabbage, seemed a little too robust after a long, hot day of walking. I cooled down over their nice, spicy beef tendon. I love the heat in this cool dish, and I love the scallions over top. I also had their soft tofu Sichuan style, excellent as ever. I don’t this kitchen is missing a step. Trying to think of a way to talk Himself into returning tonight.

I like Sweet Harvest Specialty Foods on 86th St in Bensonhurst and Yuvam Turkish Market, 805 60th St in Sunset Park. Yuvam is small and may not have what you are looking for, but it's nice.

Where to find dry Sichuan fried chicken cubes with peppers?

Another suggestion for you: at Lan Sheng try the stir-fried chicken with spicy capsicum. At Hot Kitchen, Grand Sichuan House (Bay Ridge) and at my current favorite, Famous Sichuan on Pell St., it is called chicken with spicy capsicum. Really, really good.

I don't love Jpan; sweet people, but the sushi is just okay and the place always smells a little too strongly of disinfectant. I suppose I should award them points for clean, but I find the smell off-putting.

Eater reports the Grieco/Canora empire is expanding to 5th Ave and will take over the old Great Lakes space.

Nice addition to the neighborhood and all that, but I really miss Great Lakes.

Sweet and capable service, the staff works as a team, and I think the food is good. I thought the playoffs would work in my favor and walked in at 5:05 on this Sunday night, but it was pretty well hopping by 5:15.

I started with the Hawaiian buns, sliders, really; meant to get sausage but when my server said that I could have one of each, it sounded like a fine idea. It didn’t seem like fast food to me—I rather like that rather sweet, tender bun. The veg bun was shiitake, okay, and the sausage was good, but the fish (fried flounder) was just terrific. I would have used a little salt, but the choices on the table were Sriracha and hot pepper-infused vinegar and they did the trick.

I also had the Korean fried chicken and I thought it was first rate. I can think of at least one Chowhound who would just *love* this chicken (and you know who you are). I rather like the grapes strewn overall but I am not entirely convinced by the kimchee yogurt underneath.

The booths are nice but I found the tables to be a little cramped. This was not enhanced by Entitled One who sat at the next table opposite me and asked her poor friend to stuff her fat, puffy coat nearly on my lap and later her bag (which would serve me for a whole weekend) on top of that. Her contribution to the tight space was to take plates from her server, dump the contents onto her plate and hand the empty dish back to him. Ew. There are also seats at the pass which at first glance looked like they might be fun, but looked more cramped, still, and it would be hard to enjoy the company of the 3-4 you might be with, side by side.

All in, I liked the staff and the food very much and find the space most appealing.

Friday Lunch at Sidecar

Yeah, a pet peeve (among so many, in my case) is bits of shell. My last splurge was at Aquagrill and they were pristine, but hardly as attractively priced, so you've given me something to think about.

Disappointed by Nicholas

Disappointing indeed since you made the effort to have it happen.

I recently enjoyed a carne cruda (tartare) with black truffle bruschetta at Manzo in Eataly and it scratched my truffle itch. It's not one big celebration meal, but when I have a big birthday (although I have decided not have any more of these), I spend the whole year celebrating. It seems like the best revenge.

Oh, frack ntvNYer--if I had read your earlier post more thoroughly I might have avoided ordering the chicken. Maybe not, though, because I am a little wrong-headed and have liked it so much in the past. Almost unrecognizable.

I didn't see the crispy lamb on the menu, unfortunately, and didn't bother to ask. I liked the bao well enough, but it didn't retrieve the evening.

Sorry, if I knew you were there I would have waved. I'm charming that way.
