Dinner with small kids Pitts.

The Sharp Edge in Friendship is actually great for kids. The food is good - a big menu with lots of variety and a kids menu, a separate dining room, the whole place is now smoke-free, and it is reasonably priced. We were hesitant the first time we tried it but it was great!

Dinner with small kids Pitts.

By the way, Dave & Busters is at the Waterfront, not Waterworks.

In the Shadyside area, there is Max N'Ermas, Buffalo Blues, the Sharp Edge, Thai Place, and China Palace.

We also go to Mexico City downtown with the kids and they love it.

Great Harvest Bread Closed in Castle Shannon, PA

Anyone know why they closed? I loved their cinnamon bread and made special trips to the 'burbs for it every couple of months. Sad since there is not another one in or around Pittsburgh.

Fudge?

Check out the Cooks Illustrated Easy Fudge Recipe. It uses sweetened condensed milk instead of butter and it is delicious!

Buckhead with no car

I am going to be in Atlanta for the Gift Show in mid-January. We are staying at the Marriott in Buckhead and won't have a car. What restaurants do you recommend? Thanks!

South Side Pittsburgh for group of 20

Also might want to look into Cafe Allegro and Bruschetta's (they have a private room).

South Side Pittsburgh for group of 20

Another good one for a special occasion in the South Side is the Grand Concourse - pretty building, pretty good food. Would definitely be good for all ages.

Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, et el. taste?

I just did Pure Foods Fresh Start and it was excellent! Food delivered fresh, very tasty, good portion size, and good variety. I highly recommend it if you are looking for something different. Very highly recommend!

Pittsburgh-Typhoon

I really like Typhoon - always have a great meal - LOVE their pumpkin curry. The service is very good - don't know much about the wine list - love the menu!

Casbah, Umi, Soba, Red Room, are also good choices. I have also heard amazing things about Bonna Terra.

OH Yeah Ice Cream Shop in Shadyside.

It was started by a waiter from Typhoon. I think they are also planning on expanding to coffees, desserts, etc. A night addition to the neighborhood.

I also heard that an upscale asian place is moving in next to Borders - should be an interesting addition. I guess he has a restaurant at the Wynn in Vegas and his wife is from Pittsburgh so they are opening a place here. Got this info from the owner of the Red Room (who is also adding on to his restaurant with an outdoor area and a cheaper cafe next door).

Chef Incoming

You really need to do your research - the neighborhoods are all very different and people tend to stay in their area. As an East End resident, I never go to the South Hills or North Hills. Also, most of the chains are in the suburbs. A good example of an affordable restaurant is Point Brugge in Point Breeze - always crowded, always consistent.

Pittsburgh wedding gift resto rec

You could also give a Big Burrito gift card - they have 5-6 restaurants in the area - all of their restaurants are different (Mexican, Caribbean, Japanese, Pan Asian) and have various price points.

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)? [old]

I left banking 2 years ago to start my own company - www.BeforeKids.com - giftware for moms that reflects on life before kids.. I have two kids - ages 5 and 8 - and love working for myself - gives me time to check in with Chowhound on a regular basis!

Cafe Zinho

We love Cafe Zinho - very relaxed and good food. We had a few terrible meals at the Fajita Grill and swore we wouldn't go back....

Visit to Pittsburgh - how's this list?

In the Southside, go to Dish. You need reservations but it is pretty casual. Also heard good things about Cafe du Jour which is located right on Carson St.

Someone mentioned Laforet - it closed in July.

Visit to Pittsburgh - how's this list?

You have a great list but I just wanted to add my two cents. Other recommendations:

Cafe Zinho: Cute BYOB in Shadyside
Tessaros: The best hamburger anywhere! It was featured on the Food Channel - best neighborhood eats.
Umi: Really good sushi
Soba: The bar is very nice
Typhoon: Delicious thai food, try the pumpkin curry
Point Brugge: Great mussels
Mexico City: Authentic mexical within walking distance of Westin

Also agree that you should see the Chihuly Exhibit at the Phipps - it is wonderful.

Suggestions for 2 dinners in Pittsburgh,PA

Good choices! You could also have drinks at the Red Room before Casbah - great atmosphere and right down the street from Casbah.

Girasole is good and the Gelato place next door is great for dessert!

Can I survive a move form Manhattan to Pittsburgh?

We moved from DC to Pittsburgh 10 years ago. The restaurant scene has improved significantly since we moved here. Olivertwist has some great recommendations - I would add Red Room Cafe and Umi (sushi). We are regulars at Tessaros and love the burgers. There are very few chain restaurants - most of the good restaurants are independent. There are also many neighborhoods here - all of them with different ethnic backgrounds and restaurants. We live in the East End where we can walk to 20 good restaurants. It will be great - just live in the right area. Pittsburgh Magazine just came out with their 25 Best Restaurants - check it out.
