Why does my roast chicken always do this?

alice waters says let the bird sit outside of the fridge for an hour before sticking it in the the oven

Jarring Tomatoes

DEFINITELY read up on how to can tomatoes if you're going can/boil instead of freezing. Canning is not something to improvise/experiment with - not to sound alarmist but you could die of botulism if you don't follow proper protocol.

That said, once you find good instructions for canning, it's not a big deal. It's easy.

Good luck. (Actually, don't leave it to luck.)

lucali in the slope! where?!?!?

anyone know where this will be? And anyone have any idea what is going in the former Playa spot (5th / President)

Brunch on early side?

In Brooklyn. Does anyone know a good place to get breakfast or brunch that opens at 10 or earlier?

Know anything about Cafe DuCharme on President and 5th?

I've been seeing signs in the window for weeks now, was curious if I should be excited for a great coffee spot or depressed at another off-the-mark venture in that area....

24 hours in Chicago - help a foodie!

Thank all of you so much! We LOVED Lula, OMG, best ever. Wish we could have dined at their new Nightwood.... We went and thoroughly enjoyed Hot Chocolate, too, but they were having coffee issues (french press was cold and watery, caps so-so).... Anyway, thanks for the great advice!

24 hours in Chicago - help a foodie!

Hi,
We are going to Chicago for a wedding this weekend, staying near Millenium Mile and will have a car.

We need recommendations for the best places to eat breakfast and lunches or brunches. Awesome cafes with amazing cappucinos, farmers' markets, cocktails... anything that makes us feel like we clicked into a great food scene in Chicago.

What is not-to-be-missed from a well-fed Brooklynite?!?!

THANKS!

Ramen and Scandinavian Cafe in Park Slope

wishing they had more coffee-relevant hours. they only open at 11 - ridiculous! think of all those cappucinos they could sell as people head down to the R train.

Ramen and Scandinavian Cafe in Park Slope

I just walked by 2 new spots under construction.
1) In the building that used to house OAK, now painted blue, will apparently be a scandinavian cafe - or so said a man painting outside.
AND....
2) On 4th Ave and Degraw, a new ramen spot. I was just wishing PS had decent ramen.
Anyone know anything about these new places and whether to be excited??

Lookout Hill

Anyone know anything about what is going in the old Biscuit spot on 5th Ave Park Slope? I was so happy to see Biscuit shuttered, but Lookout Hill doesn't look promising. Could it be the same owners repurposing? Please say no...

Root Hill Cafe

I've been a few times and was surprised at how not-nice the owner woman is.

Aperitivo

Was curious if anyone had been. I went for brunch this weekend (understandably not the best meal to judge a restaurant by). But I left feeling sad that another lame restaurant opened up in my 'hood.
Orange juice out of the carton: SUPER LAME. So gross, who drinks that?!
Small, not warm pastry sticks served before food came. Plated with low-end food-service style jelly boxes. Didn't hit the spot.
Coffee was like diner coffee.
Entrees: Artichoke fritata was good enough, but not at all special. Served with tasteless potatoes. Panetone french bread was good enough, but served with small pieces of apple and melon (lamest fruit salad ever, c'mon now.) The syrup was starchy corn-syrup costco style crap.
I would consider Aperitivo a medium-grade diner disguised as a tin-ceiling bistro.
Oh well...

MOIM, Korean in the slope

i went recently. food was pretty good. i missed all the little free started dishes you get when you eat in manhattan's korea town. portions were small and prices seemed way too high. because they don't have a liquor license, the bill wasn't that high in the end... but those days are sure to end soon enough.

Moim @ 206 Garfield Pl

cool space. food was pretty good, not insanely amazing. but portions were small and prices WAY TOO EXPENSIVE.

TROIS POMMES PATISSERIE PREVIEW

Prices TOO HIGH, not enough variety. I hope they come around!

Delicious Cupcake at Trois Pommes

i had a very ok, just ok, scone there - was $2.50, which seemed really expensive to me. it was SMALL, which is fine if the price is cheaper. when will there be a GREAT bakery (amazing coffee, cheese rolls, good muffins/scones) in Park Slope. I love Red Hen, but not a breakfast on the way to the subway place. Trois Pomme seems like it has too much overlap with Sweet Melissa... and I'm never really inspired to EAT anything at either place! SAD.
