pizza for a crowd in South Arlington?
Thanks for all the thoughts. I thought about Costco but I'm not a member there, don't think I want to be, and kind of didn't want to deal with the time of getting into there, parking, and whatnot.
I scouted out a number of local places and ended up going with Sicilian Pizza on Walter Reed. I got enough pizza to feed 45 or so (but I did serve some other food), paid only a little more than 100, and was happy with the pizza.
Breakfast in NOVA.
Since you said 10 miles, I'll throw the option of Eastern Market into the mix.
Breakfast in NOVA.
The food is fine but I wish they wouldn't blast the music especially before I've woken up. I wish I had had the nerve to mention this to them in person but wasn't sure if I was the only one who needs a few cups of coffee before she can handle 100 decibles of accordian techno.
pizza for a crowd in South Arlington?
Hi. I need to feed a crowd of probably 30-50 people on a budget (hopefully around 100-150). By feed, I may not actually mean feed, since I don't know if we'll have enough to totally satiate everyone. Anyone have tips on the best bargains for pizza that is not bad?
I'm in South Arlingotn, but will travel a little if needed.
Right now I'm tempted to go with Ledo's since it is, I think, a little less than Lost Dog but I could go to a chain too. I usually make my own pizza so, could use some help.
Thanks.
Suggestions of where to buy chickpeas
Thanks for the tips, everyone!
I ended up getting chickpeas at Whole Foods (where chickpeas and black beans seemed to be the only beans not available in the bulk section).
tccamp, I'll definitely keep those suggestions in mind as I go to that Giant sometimes. I did not know about Mediterranean Bakery but it is up my alley.
Suggestions of where to buy chickpeas
Yeah, my Giant did not have dried chickpeas, which kind of surprised me.
Suggestions of where to buy chickpeas
Suggestions of where to buy chickpeas in NW DC or mid or South Arlington? I guess I could go to Lebanese Taverna Market but I'm on my bicycle and have a full schedule, so I would prefer something closer if possible. I've had bad luck with dried chickpeas before but I am determined to figure this out and can pull out my pressure cooker if necessary. I hate all the cans I go through when I make hummus.
Thanks.
P.S. Tips on tahini brands are good too.
Cookie cake?
I guess the name of the place where we used to get them is Original Cookie Comanpy.
Cookie cake?
I have fond remembrances of birthday chocolate chip cookie cakes from my youth. I forget the name but there was a South Hills Village bakery that made some tasty ones. It's no longer around and the grocery store chocolate chip cookie cakes are not cutting it. Aside from making my own, any suggestions?
fairtrade chocolate?
Any suggestions for local places to buy fairly traded chocolate as in for Monday? Preferably in DC or Arlington.
I suppose Whole Foods would have something but it is a bit out of my normal way to get to one so thought I would ask first.
Cake decorating supplies in Pittsburgh?
Any tips on a place (closer to Dormont the better) that would sell confectionary supplies?
All we need are pink discs. Making cow cupcakes for a 2-year-olds birthday and we are stuggling with the snout.
I guess Neccos would work in a pinch.
Thanks.
Africana in Silver Spring or vegetarian near White Oak LIbrary
I'm looking for a place serving vegetarian food near White Oak. Any suggestions?
If I can't find something, I know there are decent options in SIlver Spring. Has anyone tried Africana Restaurant on Piney Branch. Can't find much on the web. I know the Burmese place in Silver Spring is a good option.
Chantilly Donut Shop, Chantilly, VA Reviews?
This doesn't answer your question, but I also used to love donuts from Chantily Donut Shop. Ecco Cafe on G ST NW sold them. All of a sudden, they stopped selling the donuts (about 1-2 years ago).
Hope the shop is still around.
DC restaurant for large youth group (35 people)?
There are a number of Ethiopian places with a lot of room where you would not be bothingering people in Arlington on Columbia Pike. One is very close to the Air Force Memorial and Pentagon. This is actually a closer drive to the memorials and Smithsonian than the U St Ethiopian places, but it is not in DC. (Maybe a 5 minute drive from the Lincoln Memorial with no wrong turns.)
I have taken out-of-town picky eaters to the one right beside the Air Force Memorial, and they left happy. I don't know the name, but could probably find it if needed. Price is very reasonable. Off the top of my head, I think dishes are $7 to $13.
Ravi Kabob in Arlington featured here
What is the difference between the ones on either side of Glebe? I know one is newer (and actually tried to go there last night but left due to a long line).
Latin American (read: not Mexican) places
I was on a similar quest for gallo pinto after traveling to CR and Nicaragua and didn't come up with much, but if you are not familiar with this website, it might be of some use:

Spring Rolls (not fried)
Hi.
Where can I find spring rolls that are not fried? I'm thinking of the ones made from rice paper, stuffed with rice noodles, basil, carrots, mint, shrimp, tofu, etc... (in case they go by another name)
Please help. Every city I've lived in has had a place I regularly went and bought them for around $2. I can make them, but it is a lot of work.
Hopefully in Nova or DC. I live in Arlington.
Thanks.
Outstanding ethnic, Harrisburg/York/Lanc area?
I concur on Passage to India and the Thai place in Dillsburg. I would also recommend Aangan for Indian. I no longer live in Harrisburg, but upon passing through the area this past weekend, stopped at Broad St Market for lunch, and forgot how much I miss it! The spring rolls from Golden Dragon are wonderful, and the Indian place (Curry in a Hurry) isn’t bad either.
My only regret from the experience is not buying one of the self-decorated horseshoes from the sweet little Mennonite (?) boy in the straw hat in the corner. Someone please patronize him! I had non-buyer’s regret later and couldn’t get him out of my mind.
Suggestions near Kenilworth Gardens?
Any tips on a vegetarian friendly restaurant within 2 miles of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens? I am planning a meeting there with my hiking group and would like a place for lunch. What would be ideal would be an Indian restaurant or a Salvadorean place with great beans tucked away in a strip mall. That sort of thing. I would prefer to explore somewhere new than to have everyone trek into Capitol Hill. There must be something in Deanwood or Fairmont Heights or somewhere around there.
Thanks!
Boston Hound moving to NoVA -- Show me the Bagels!
I grew up in a Jewish neighborhood with many bagel places (though not New York so some may completely discount me).
I like Capital Bagels in Alexandria as a few have mentioned. I have been to Brooklyn Bagels twice and never liked my bagel - too dry and tasteless. I also do like Wegman's, though never had one here.
Shade Grown Coffee
Thanks a lot to everyone for the suggestions. I did go ahead and make a bulk order from a link that someone posted.
Also, if anyone is interested, the Ethiopian place I had heard of does actually serve shade grown coffee and is Sidamo.

Juan Valdez told me that they don't sell single cups of brewed shade grown coffee.
Shade Grown Coffee
After reading Silence of the Songbirds, and realizing how quickly songbirds' populations are crashing due to habitat destruction, pesticides, skyscrapers, cats, etc, I'm trying to change over to shade grown coffee (preserves their winter habitat since it is akin to growing coffee in a forest). However, it is proving really difficult to find brewed!
Any suggestions? I live in Arlington and work near the White House, which is where I buy most of my coffee. The best I could find is Caribou which sometimes sells some rainforest alliance coffee (which I'm not sure is shade grown.) I once asked the guy to verify that the coffee I was buying was rainforest alliance and he asked me if I worked for them, so I doubt they get many questions like that. I usually buy wonderful non shade grown coffee from an Ethiopian guy in a coffee cart on 18th, and even told him I would subsidize it if he switched to shade grown but we had some language barriers.
I also would be interested in suggestions for local places to buy shade grown coffee for gifts. That, I'm sure will be easier to find.
I also remember hearing a while ago about a coffee shop maybe near U St that started with an S. I think Ethiopian and maybe shade grown.
Thanks.
Puerto Rican Food In The DC Met Area???
Probably better places, but I have heard that Banana Cafe in Capitol Hill has some Puerto Rican dishes. Their menu is online.

2008 Restaurant Week MENUS
Thanks also for all the research. Also, I have never done the RW thing. I have always wanted to try Agraria and my bf has wanted to try some of the French restaurants on the list. However, given my BF's personality, if the waiter is condescending or you have to beg for the RW menu, it will be an extremely unpleasant evening, so I would appreciate restaurants to avoid on these grounds.
Harrisburg or Hazleton: ISO almond paste, ingredients
Hi. Driving to PA for Christmas and hoping to buy ingredients there. Can anyone suggest a store in either Harrisburg or Hazleton (or even York or Lancaster) that would sell things like almond paste and espresso powder?
Or, can anyone suggest a nicey homey bakery in Hazleton that sells a good Bouche de Noel?
Cheap Eats Needed in Foggy Bottom
I would include Mehran's at 2138 Pennsylvania Ave NW. Lots of decent curry and kabob type food. I think they are Pakistani. Lots of lunch food in the $4-$8 range. Good vegetarian options too.
Also, maybe not strictly Foggy Bottom, but Java Green is within 3-6 blocks too.
