Africa Kine Restaurant -- Yummy Senegalese on 116th

Just a heads-up: Africa Kine is moving farther uptown to 2269 7th Ave (133rd/134th), apparently the old La Marmite space. Not sure when this is happening; they posted this pic on Facebook in June, just a week after this thread was last updated.

What the hey?

A nihonjin friend tells me the advertiser, Gurunavi—GURUme (foodie, gourmet) + NAVIgator—promises to recommend venues for dates, drinking parties, private groups, and girls'-night-out gatherings called joshi-kai, among other occasions.

Wings in the East Village

Tried these for the first time last week and liked them a lot. But what really stays with me is the burnt end baked beans - thick, smoky, meaty, not too sweet, almost a meal by itself. I'll be getting that again for sure.

Chowhound has relaxed its restrictions on cross-board posts. When recommendations flow naturally out of a conversation like this one, you should feel free to share them here even if they're from outside Manhattan.

Black Seed vs. Baz - Bagel Wars

The Serious Eats crew did a taste test a few years back, rounding up freshly made bagels from around town that were no more than 3 hours old. They got some confounding results—pedigreed favorites that bombed, dark horses that showed like champions—and eventually determined that freshness trumped all other factors and that bagels suffer a steep decline within minutes out of the oven.

Their conclusion: "A bagel's half-life, untoasted and unadorned, is no more than half an hour. It was far less than any of us had thought, but after more than thirty minutes, we saw a rapid decline in texture, crust, and even taste."

Eiji's anago ...

I find the OP does share worthwhile tips, though unlike Jonkyo's they're invariably terse. A few years back one of his Outer Boroughs posts got picked up in the Chow Blog (http://www.chow.com/food-news/4866/ko...) and also kicked off an informative exchange about Korean food in Flushing (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/487072). Good stuff.

Still, it wouldn't be a crime if he actually named the restaurant he was talking about.

Help! Any recs for an upscale Chinese?

The website says it's affiliated with Hunan Manor (http://www.chow.com/food-news/90790/r...), which does have a connection with Flushing's Hunan House, so that's promising. And the Hunan section of the menu looks legit: http://www.hunanhouse56.com/menu.php

Real Kung Fu Little Steam Buns (Noodles) BUT NOT SO FAST...

The guy behind Kung Fu made noodles at a Lanzhou stall in the basement of the Golden Mall in Flushing (http://narrative.ly/meet-your-maker/k...), and his Hell's Kitchen menu is not exactly Americanized. As ipsedixit and scoopG note, it includes legit northern Chinese breakfast fare like soy milk (including the non-sweet kind, added since ipsedixit's post) and youtiao, which you sure won't find at those Chinese restaurants that "for decades have doted [sic] the landscape of America." None of this excuses a sweet, flavorless pork sauce — that sounds like a miss. But the place has actual Chinese cred.

As for prices, they reflect Midtown rents, which are most likely far higher than those in the eastern quarter of Chinatown. And you're just not going to find as heavily Chinese a clientele on Eighth Avenue as on East Broadway — though I was surprised at how many customers were speaking Chinese when I was there.
