That's right — that was the old Azul Bistro space.

Good mexican restaurant in Manhattan?

Different place. El Parador is way east, nowhere near 8th Ave.

北方美食 - New northern Chinese in Chinatown

"It’s easier to stumble on Taste of Northern China than to find it," the NYT's critic writes, more than 3 months after pravit posted on this place (and 2 months after Chow editorial picked up on it: http://www.chow.com/food-news/152975/...).

She might have added that it's even easier to learn of it first on Chowhound.

New Chow.com Homepage

Seems to me the phrase "Chowhound Community" would clue in newcomers just as effectively as "Community" about what Chowhound is. The site would erase Chowhound from the homepage only if it intended to phase out and eventually bury the brand. Was that the intention?

Ad taking up screen

Thanks! The homepage ad I saw just now was still big and obtrusive, but it didn't obscure navigation tools. And the one on a regional board was relatively small.

New Chow.com Homepage

When I mention Chowhound in conversation, people know what I'm talking about. The term has even seeped into the wider media as shorthand for avid eaters who go to great lengths in search of deliciousness. That's right, us.

If I mention Chow, I get blank looks. CBSi won't accept that of the two identities, Chowhound's the one with legs. It refuses to acknowledge that the Chow brand may carry about as much weight with the public as the long-dead print mag that gave it its name.

Continued Feedback on Moderation Changes, and More Guidance for Bloggers

Just wanted to note that Chow editorial swiftly spotlighted this thread at the time (http://www.chow.com/food-news/123198/...). Like countless other finds later deemed newsworthy by mainstream media, this one surfaced first here on Chowhound.

Africa Kine Restaurant -- Yummy Senegalese on 116th

Just a heads-up: Africa Kine is moving farther uptown to 2269 7th Ave (133rd/134th), apparently the old La Marmite space. Not sure when this is happening; they posted this pic on Facebook in June, just a week after this thread was last updated.

Wings in the East Village

Tried these for the first time last week and liked them a lot. But what really stays with me is the burnt end baked beans - thick, smoky, meaty, not too sweet, almost a meal by itself. I'll be getting that again for sure.

Chowhound has relaxed its restrictions on cross-board posts. When recommendations flow naturally out of a conversation like this one, you should feel free to share them here even if they're from outside Manhattan.

Black Seed vs. Baz - Bagel Wars

The Serious Eats crew did a taste test a few years back, rounding up freshly made bagels from around town that were no more than 3 hours old. They got some confounding results—pedigreed favorites that bombed, dark horses that showed like champions—and eventually determined that freshness trumped all other factors and that bagels suffer a steep decline within minutes out of the oven.

Their conclusion: "A bagel's half-life, untoasted and unadorned, is no more than half an hour. It was far less than any of us had thought, but after more than thirty minutes, we saw a rapid decline in texture, crust, and even taste."

Eiji's anago ...

I find the OP does share worthwhile tips, though unlike Jonkyo's they're invariably terse. A few years back one of his Outer Boroughs posts got picked up in the Chow Blog (http://www.chow.com/food-news/4866/ko...) and also kicked off an informative exchange about Korean food in Flushing (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/487072). Good stuff.

Still, it wouldn't be a crime if he actually named the restaurant he was talking about.

Salt was not a problem, and I tend to undersalt when cooking, so I'm sensitive to that. (Logged on under my usual C'hound handle, not my Chow byline.)
