This bourbon tastes like rotted fish
Are you on any sort of medication? Sometimes, they'll screw up your taste buds. It's happened to me more than once....
Bad beer trends.
To my mind the Czech brews don't get enough recognition for their greatness.
Bad beer trends.
Does anyone remember Wit Beer, a contract berewry out of NYC. They made a "black wit", sort of like a Jumbo shrimp....
Session Beer Day
The late great Pyramid Pale was truly a subtle beer that was very sessionable. I love some of the b-ombs but a subtle beer that I can drink more than 2-3, is almost a lost thing.
Madrid Restaurant's - Must Try!
Go regional. Galleo/Gaklicianfor seafood and the original empanada. Basuq/Vasco for steak, an asador, Asutianao for cider, fabada, cabrales etc...etc...you cant go wrong and will get what Spain is all about.
Do you keep frozen dumplings in your freezer?
Yes, especially during the winter. WE hit up a Chinese supermarket on Main, just off the LIE and stockup on 4-5 different bags/styles and hold them. It makes for a tasty quick meal, especially w/a 15 month trolling around. I didn't know that uncle sold dumplings to go. Gotta get some.
Session Beer Day
Rex, you're right. Love my stong beers but they aint always what you want to drink. Was very dissapointed in the Full Sail sessions....
Ruthless from Sierra Nevada
I've stopped buying the new stuff from Sierra. I love their pale and their grossly underrated stout. However, not one of their new bottled products does anything for me.The abbeys, the ipa's all eh... I do love Rubbrod by the bruery.
Is Spicy & Tasty still good?
Still the same. same help, same fella up front at the cold tabler and I assume same chef. Food is as good as it ever was.
Can't believe I am asking this question, but....
10 is average, though you can do a tapas crawl ealier
Frozen, Bells 3rd Coast Old Ale
Pulled a 3rd Coast out of the closet and put it in my freezer the othe rnight to chill it for a bit. Well, I fell asleep and forgot all abou tit. Went into the freezer and there it was, unfrozen. Sort of a miracle, ya know, candles that burn for 8 nights, Jewish fella with no earthly dad, religious figures who are celibate but know all about love N birth control. Any way, it was drinkable but seemed to have been sapped of it's flavor. This was a 2009 bottle and they been pretty tasty otherwise.
cheese at Fairway - too many strikes to count
What cheeses or types of cheeses are you buying?
Solo in Sf
Coming into town for 2 nights for the first time in about 5 years. I'm staying in Uionn Sq/Tenderloin. I'm looking for a place where I can eat solo, good-great food (anything but Korean), casual, especially for a late arrival. Prefer to eat in that area as am working late. Many thanks.
Two Brothers North Wind Imperial Stout
Seems a little thin to me,not as full bodied as Rasputin.
12 Days of Spain
In a way Spain is like what the US used to be. Full of interesting nooks and crannies. Full of great regional cuisines, wines and different as well. I always prefer to see 1-2 regions in depth instead of seeing bits n pieces. So, assuming no car. Pais vasco, San Sebastian is a must, and there's some interesting art there as well From there it's an easy bus/train ride to Bilbao for 1-2 days and the fish market in Bilbao is great, worth a detour. Galicia has great food, the scenery (outside the coast) is nowhere near as nice as Asturias (except for the Ribera Sacra). Pontevedra has a great little tapas scene and from there it's an easy hop to some vineyards if you can rent a car for a day or two.
Asturias is tough as (for me anyway) it's all about nature and small towns.
Madrid, well, you can spend all 12 days there and not be bored, plus Barcelona is 2-3 hours by AVE train, so a surf n turf combo is so easy.
Andalucia that time of year is probably very nice, AVE to Sevilla from Madrid real easy.
But all in all to get to small towns, vineyards where some of the best stuff is, requires a car.
My choice would be Madrid (barrio Retiro, La Latina etc) for 3-4 days, then Barcelona for same, then fly to Sam Sebastian and stay put. You wont come away unhappy or famished.
A Surprise Trip to Nice, France
Yeah, this guy seems to know his stuff. Written in a professorial sort of way though
recs for 2012 March Hondarribia-Gijon-Oviedo trip
The local bean dish of Asturias is Fabada. Made from Fabes beans which are doc/aoc protected. Really great dish made w/Morcillia and other pork. I've heard about a place outside of Oviedo, maybe Casa Gerado that has a great version of Fabada but dont go by me. Google it....
Liquor Store on Nassau St Greenpoint? Zubrowka vodka
Any Polish liquor store worth anything will always have Zubrowka. It's very good. Don't forget Zytnia as well, rye vodka if I remember correctly. Both as good as their over priced cousins, Belvedere, Chopin etc
Cider Taste off
The Cider from Spain is waydifferent from the French and the American
French ciders and Poire
There's a restaurant just up Hausmann from the dept stores caleld Pomme. Yup, they specialize in apple based drinks and food. Had lunch there and it was way better than I had heard. I had a tasting of ciders to go along w/my meal. The stand out was Label rouge Royal Guillevic from Ciderie Nicol. Had never seen it before or since. Very tasty. Maybe a place like Auge (just up the street) or another good liquor store will have it or some other interesting ciders.
I'm a big calvados drinker but before you spend $50-$80 bucks you should try as many as you can. Love the Groult, Huard and my buddy loves Camut. These 3 are all available in liveable cities back in the USA.
Ventresca taste off
Saw a new brand of Ventresca @ the market recently, Great King. The box said, wild caught/hand packed in olive oil. It's the product of Maurtiius, $2.99 a can. But, it's not worth $2.99..It's mushy, flavorless, and while I know th oil us not virgin ...While the Ortiz and other good brands from Spain are often $8-10.00 a can, they are more than worth it. Firm, flavorful, mustingly god and
Cider Taste off
Yeah heard that on a great NYC beer pod cast a while back. Though ,the GI beers havent thrilled me...
Cider Taste off
That's the market I hear all the UK/Irish imports are after. That's almost a whole different product, or at least to my tatsebuds...
Cider Taste off
Yup, but the bigger biys have been sniffing around for a while. Didn't Jim Koch have a label for a while and don't forget the Brits and their neighbors the Irish...
