Gastro Pubs

I know you asked about DC but Salt in Baltimore is just what you're asking for. The bar has unusual beers and drinks and the food is terrific and fairly priced. Two weeks ago I had a braised bison hot pot that was memorable.... and you can eat in or at the bar. They're also now open on Sundays after gettting a seven-day liquor license.

In DC I would not overlook Hudson's on M and 21st---

Central or Brasserie Beck or Proof?

I've been a singleton at the bar in Beck's and had great service and decent conversation. It;s one of my favorite places in DC regardless of whether you have a small or large group and if you just want a beer and a snack or the full menu.

Georgetown Bagelry on M Street Closed!!! Where do I get Great NY-style Bagels, now?

Headingt to FL for two weeks after Christmas and ready for my annual Cubafest... thanks for the note!

Georgetown Bagelry on M Street Closed!!! Where do I get Great NY-style Bagels, now?

Yes, Ize's is good; I often forget about it because Bagel City is further up the road and I pass it first.

The best bagels in the area are from Goldberg's in Pikesville, which keeps kosher hours if anyone accidentally tries to go there on a Saturday expedition from Washington to Baltimore.

Bagel City in Rockville Pike makes bialys. I agree, they are rare around here.

Good Eats off I-95 between NJ and FL?

Smithfield's is just fine for fast food. I'd trade a few superfluous Wendy's and Popeye's for it up north.

Good Eats off I-95 between NJ and FL?

Naco, you assume that families who aren't necessarily foodies want to eat Mexican and Central American food in small southern towns. I've done this in Alabama and Mississippi and it was a disaster. I'll get my pupusas in Northern Virginia and my pollo a la brasa all around the Beltway. And I don't have any complaints with the fried chcken at Bills or Gardners (Rocky Mount), so skip the pork if you think it's dry. The people are driving from Jersey, for heaven's sake. You want them to look for some sweet little Italian place in the greater Fayetteville region? Come on.

Good Eats off I-95 between NJ and FL?

You're too hard on Bill's. We hit in on a Sunday when driving back to Maryland from Florida and it turns a dreary last-day-of-vacation into a treat. I'd recommend it for honest roadfood.

I will say that when you go inside, you can tell the once-a-year people like us from the locals who eat there twice a week. The word svelte is not commonly spoken in Wilson.

Churrascarias, Rodizio, Brazilian Barbecue!

Went somewhere there once about three years ago (a big crowded sports bar kind of place not on Ferry Street but just off it) and got feijoada for ONE and it was served in a bucket so big there was enough for four meals. Or maybe six. I asked if this was the right order and they said yes. It was about $10 or $12, ridiculously cheap.

Ate what I could and then, alas, realized didn't have a cooler with me and had to drive straight back from Newark to Baltimore. My wife (who got a shrimp dish that was just OK) expressed the non-negotiable edict that the food would spoil before we made it home. regardless of the time I could make on the Turnpike. So I left it behind. Next time, ice chest and 7-Eleven.

Best feijoada I can remember outside of Brazil.

Churrascarias, Rodizio, Brazilian Barbecue!

Name and address. Obrigado.

Argentinian recs?

what particular places in Corona would you recommend and how close are they to the subway?

Who Needs Mark's Duck House?

I go to Mark's (and Full Kee on Route 7) when I want pan-fried noodles. As long as they keep that up to speed, and it was when I went in July, the rest doesn't matter to me. I do Dim Sum either in Gaithersburg at New Fortune or a la carte at Tysons Buffet in Rockville.

Rice 'N' Beans Restaurant Reviews?

I've been there three times and it's great. I travel often to Brazil and have family there and this is the closest place in the US to a neighborhood bar/lachonete that does simple food like grilled chicken or roast pork with, yippers, rice and beans. Only trouble is the place is tiny. But if they moved to larger digs, the prices would go up and the ambience down.

It's a winner. Bom dia...

Abandoned Restaurants

There's a big redevelopment plan for Highlandtown if the Red Line transit plan makes it through the political process. In the illustrated guide to this plan is the vacant Haussner's building, which would be redeveloped into a kind of mixed-use shopping venue. Someone tried briefly to reopen it as a restaurant three years ago and lasted a few months. It won't get razed.

Hard ice cream in NoVA?

I've had the same question, too. I do not like soft serve or yogurt or custard. Sometimes when I am in a place like a mall Haagen-Dazs or a Ben & Jerry's I choose my flavor based on how hard the ice cream in a certain carton is; the harder the better. I say bring back Howard Johnsons...

Crab cakes in the DC area

The Metro 29 Diner on Lee Highway in Arlington. corner of Glebe Road. That's all you need to hear.

Love letter to Baltimore and its food

This is why we have what amounts to our vacation house in Baltimore, one of my favorite places in the world... We'll keep this blogpost forever. And I'm heading for Piedigrotta to get some of that meat pie.

Good dinner suggestions around Edison

Try the Skylark Diner at least once. They have a lounge as well as some of the best diner food in NJ, which is saying something, Jersey being the diner capital of the world...

Elevation Burger. let's see how this one stacks up.

I should add Chef Geoff's and M&S Grill, in the bar, and at happy hour. Cheaper than a Big Mac... and you're in a nice place with good brews and drinks. Dogfish Head in Gaithersburg has outstanding burgers, and they also have a location now on Route 7 in the Seven Corners area of NoVa.

Elevation Burger. let's see how this one stacks up.

I haven't been to Ray's Hell, so, yes, that comment doesn't apply to them. I'll get there in the next two weeks or so...

Elevation Burger. let's see how this one stacks up.

i sometimes get a burger at whitlows at the bar on mondays before my 7 p.m. bridge game in arlington--- they do it rare and get it right every time. so does the brew pub in ballston mall and liberty tavern

Where to buy Guarana Antarctica? (soda @ Fogo De Chao)

Saw it yesterday in a Shoppers Food Warehouse. I prefer it to Brazilia because they should spell Brasil properly.

Elevation Burger. let's see how this one stacks up.

If you can't cook a burger so rare it's alive, I don't want it... no matter what the organic/hand-cut/never-frozen/grass-fed bona fides. So I'm done with Elevation and for that matter, with Z Burger and Five Guys. The best burgers around here are at bars, IMHO, not specialty burger places.....

Lidia's (Pgh) revisted

My wife and I have dined at Lidia's three times in the last three years (on various trips to Pittsburgh from our home in Baltimore). The brunch was the best value for a brunch I can recall in a long time, and dinner is certainly above average. Service is terrific and the room is very attractive. And easy to park. I am also mystified when I see Lidia's get harsh treatment on this forum.

Lancaster Co.: What restaurant has never disappointed?

I've had excellent experiences at Strawberry Hill, Gibraltar and Iron Hill. I have had hit and miss with the food at Lancaster Brewing, but their burgers are first-rate. Can't beat it for lunch on a summer Saturday after a 30-mile bicycle ride.

Remarkably decent strip shopping center pizza...

I'd drive from Arlington for this, if you're accurate...

Latin American (read: not Mexican) places

Anywhere around here that specializes in house-made arepas? Not pupusas, I mean arepas? Maybe someone from New York should come down and start up a place...

Minneapols on Valentine's Day

I had breakfast twice at Hell's Kitchen during four days in the area last May. I subsequently decided it is the best breakfast place in the U.S. of A....

Best Chinese in Baltimore?

Ok, I exaggerated -:) But I can't put Odenton in Baltimore no matter how fast you can drive on 695... a city as great and large as Baltimore should not need to send people to Anne Arundel County to get Chinese food.. Oh, also, no need for the D.C. beltway. Take I-70 to Route 27 and go through Damascus to Gaithersburg and thence to Rockville. Much, much quicker...

Best thin crust pizza in the DC area

Thanks, Mike. That's still further out than I'm looking for. The deal is I leave my office in downtown Washington on Mondays at 5 :15 or 5:30 and need to grab something before my bridge game in north Arlington at 7:00. Hence my familiarity with the Italian Store, Rocklands, and (unfortunately) the Taco Bell on Lee Highway past Glebe Road. I've occasionally left early enough to hit the Caribbean place on Lee near George Mason. But if I want a slice or two of good old New Jersey/New York pizza, is there any nearby alternative?
